I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: If 40k could possess an opinion, it would openly laugh at your moral condemnation of it. It would sincerely not care. That’s the entire grounding premise of the 40k universe. Complaining that the 40k universe is harsh, shitty, and unfair is like complaining that water is wet.

Why would anyone want to be involved in a sci-fi universe they dislike the grounding tenets of? It’s genuinely baffling.

The phrase “Man up!” is said to someone - typically a boy - who is expressing non-masculine traits (such as crying, or another kind of “feminine” emotional outburst). In this way, the expression is used to say “Stop crying and be more masculine!”. This is not a problem, and saying that it’s a problem is to completely misunderstand the sentiment.

There are very few men who will sincerely say that one should “Never express emotion”. Very few. Not even most wrestlers or marines would say that. Those few men who do are usually insecure, and themselves express emotion much more than they deem to be ideal for themselves (which is something actually related to the phrase “Man up!”). Nevertheless, expressing lots of emotions is not inherently a bad thing.

What is meant by “Man up!”, then, is NOT “Never express emotion! Ever!”. That’s a simple and flawed view of the phrase. “Man up!” actually means “Now is not the time to just sit there and cry!”. It is a phrase used to spur one to put one’s emotions to one side and focus on the job at hand. It is used to instil discipline. It is used to encourage the recipient to stop being childish, to be mature, and to realise that breaking down in tears isn’t going to solve whatever problem they are facing. In effect, it is a phrase used to encourage pragmatism in a situation which demands it. Any debilitating emotions can be processed after the problem has passed, but not before.

To dismiss the use of the phrase “Man up!” is to dismiss the value it has in maintaining personal morale in tough situations, and in getting shit done. The alternative is to encourage whining and ineffectual displays of emotion instead of gritting one’s teeth and getting on with it. This latter sentiment is what is truly awful, and is something “Man up!” is used to avoid.

Sorry, this has been eating at me. Can people please stop ripping into the concept of masculinity? Just... in general? It’s completely fine the way it is.

Stop pushing for a second referendum.

The people have spoken. Democracy has done its job. Even if the people were hoodwinked into voting Leave for bigoted or dishonest reasons, you can’t change it now. This is one of democracy’s many flaws, but we can’t push for a revote just because some people might change their mind. It doesn’t work like that.

We all know that, had Remain won out, we’d all be digging in our heels to stop the dissatisfied Leave voters pushing for a revote. Don’t be hypocrites. Be consistent.

In essence, it was mostly the young and educated - especially those in Scotland and NI - who wanted to stay. We’re the ones who are going to have to deal with the consequences of this. We were just heavily outnumbered.
