The thing about going away to college is you learn. Not just about classes, and not just about a new city, but you learn how to be your own person. You’re not “Kevin’s sister” or “Katie’s cousin” you are you. You have to become a person you are proud of being, while at the same time learning how to learn. I won’t lie to you - it will be tough. There will be times when you feel like you’re falling apart and the world will end because you have to make it on your own. You may need to get a job to pay tuition and be able to support yourself, you may need to get a second job, and maybe even a third. It will be hard. You’ll cry at times because it’s so damn stressful to be you - this new person who is making it on their own. You’ll miss being able to cry to your mom and your friends back home, to be able to confide in them and have your stress fade away. Because in this new place everything will be different and you won’t know what to do with all of these emotions trapped within you. You’ll say to yourself, “It’s worth it. It has to be damnit.” And guess what, it will be. Because there will also be times when you feel ecstatic that you chose to do this. You’ll feel so triumphant after going to work for hours and still pulling an all-nighter to get an A on your hardest Biology exam. It will fucking rule. You will feel like you climbed a damn mountain. When those times come, cherish them. The work that college entails isn’t to be taken lightly. You are doing something, for once, for yourself. And the day it is all over, when you hold that degree in your hands you will be amazed by the power you have found in yourself. You have the ability to work three jobs to pay tuition, get a 4.0 in college and go to all the clubs and sports you want. It’s possible, trust me, it is. But you will have to find that piece of yourself that is more determined than you have ever been before. You will do it though, in college - you will learn.
