This. . This had to a mistake. His idol would never say this, right? Of course, Rusty didn't take into account that he would know what happened, or that he didn't exactly know the other personally- but he would have never guessed it!

" I. . What? "

He was still dumbfounded by what he had just heard. Anyone else making such insult would get an angry comeback but this. . This was different.

”You heard me.” Fire didn’t sound the least bit sympathetic, and he wasn’t. Fanboys were not a concept he was unfamiliar with - Red’s, that is, not his, never his - and they were annoying on a good day. This wasn’t a good day.

“here,” green stops pacing around the lab to shove a clipboard in rusty’s arms, before turning and digging through another cabinet full of files and papers, scrunching up his face as he skims through all of them. 

the clipboard in question has a list of all the pokemon under his care, and is a good 20 pages or so thick - with hundreds of names under each page. finally, his eyes light up when he sees what he wants to see, and he power-walks across the first floor to pry a pokeball out of a slot in the wall where it was warming up.

when he turns back to rusty, he offers a small smile, even if it’s a bit strained.

“the pokemon i’m giving you requires a bit of work, but most pokemon do - so if you care for him, he’ll change you as a person in return.” which was his hope. 

letting the pokemon out of his pokeball, a machop appears, stretching before looking up at his new trainer, waving happily with a grin spread across his face.

“machop are friendly, loyal, and steadfast.” he knelt down to pat the machop’s cheek with a more genuine smile, earning an affectionate rumble from the pokemon. “they’re very self-sufficient and love helping out their trainers with hard work, but they require proper nutrition, proper exercise, and lots of food.” 

standing back up, green takes machop’s hand gently, peering back up at rusty.

“i’ll be giving you instructions on how to care and train for him, and i’ll provide you with some parks that offer the kind of exercise machop will need. you’ll probably find yourself buying food more often, but, if you take care of him properly, you’ll be met with one of the strongest pokemon that will care for you in return.” 

suddenly, however, he turns serious, pointing a finger accusingly at the younger trainer.

“i’m trusting you here, okay? i know he can take care of himself and will defend himself if you mistreat him, but this is a chance for you to properly grow as a trainer.” his tone going cold, he juts his finger into rusty’s chest. 

“don’t squander it.”

“Besides! If I post this this should get like, a million likes and retweets!” Red was already texting on his phone before taking a selfie and posting it to twitter. But then the unthinkable happened! His hand slipped and the drink spilled on himself instead before he could even get to drinking it!

Red stares down at the stain on his jacket with his mouth still half full with a ruben sub sandwitch. He swallows it down and smiles shaking his head.

“ Well , they wouldn’t have been completely crazy ! ”

While Rusty didn’t wait this long to call Bede his friend , he seemed pretty glad that the other had finally call him a friend as well ! Previously , he would deny that they had any sort of friendship connection. Wonder why that was. . Rusty knew he had some problems , but he didn’t think they were that bad that Bede wouldn’t want to hang out with him !

“ I even gave you that bracelet ! You still have it , right ?! ” 

“Yes, Rusty. I do. You do know you misspelled my name as the word ‘Bead’ right? I can’t tell whether you did that on purpose to spite me or on accident.” It was probably done on purpose for the pun’s sake. Beads spelling ‘Bead’. Besides, Rusty seemed to love to do things to spite Bede.  He smiled, quite softly. “Why do I have the misfortune of being your best friend, Rusty?” he said it sarcastically, not meaning a word. He’d expect a subtle punch in the arm for this behavior, or a gentle shove. In his experience, that’s how this friendship thing works. He says something rude, and gets playfully punished accordingly.
