Matt, terrifyingly, was crying.
âShh,â Mello hissed, flailing around slightly as his eyes adjusted to the darkness before he successfully clamped his hand over Mattâs mouth. He didnât know what to do when this kind of thing happened. Near never cried because he was a robot and Matt never cried because he was a stoner in every sense but physical. âYou have to be quiet, theyâre gonna hear us.â
Matt cried louder. Mello cast Near a panicked look that he would later deny to every living soul. You always know what to do, so help me out here!
Nearâs eyes flashed. âL will be here soon,â he whispered. He reached over, then looked up at Mello in silent question. Mello, understanding, shifted to give Near access to the crown of Mattâs head; Near carded his fingers through Mattâs hair. âHeâll be here and everything will be fine. Right, Mello?â
âYeah,â Mello said. How could he have forgotten? âYeah. Duh.â
Mattâs sobs died into hiccups. âPromise?â
Near hesitated.
âPromise,â Mello said into the pause. âI promise.â
Another half-hour crawled by, every silent second like ants on Melloâs skin, before someone knocked on the storage closet they were packed into. The special Junior Detective Leagueâs knock. Mello gestured for the other two to stay back before cracking open the door just a sliver.
It wasnât L. Mello, who had craned his face upward expectantly, stared in temporary confusion at the empty space before looking down to see Asahi. âThere you are!â Heâd assembled his face into a facsimile of relief. âCome on, we donât have time.â
âWhereâs Ryuga?â Matt piped up like the idiot he was.
âHolding them off. Now come on.â
Mello glanced back. His gaze skipped past Mattâs glowing smile to land on Near. He raised his eyebrows.
Near made eye contact, then dipped his head into a reluctant nod. We canât trust him but heâs probably telling the truth right now.
Mello spun back around. âFine,â he said to Asahi, pushing the door open. The junior detective trio tumbled out. âLead the way or whatever.â
âA âthank youâ would be nice,â Asahi said in what he probably thought was a friendly tone, but then the four of them were racing through the corridors and then out into the abandoned lot outside; Mello sucked in lungfuls of fresh air and decided to let it go this time.
