âMerry fucking birthday to me,â he mutters to himself as he sinks into the exam room chair, strangely nervous as he waits for the opte-whatever to come in the room.Â
Heâs never liked doctors, especially one that pokes around your eyes, but heyâthatâs the downside when you shut God away for good. Garth was nice enough to fix up Deanâs teeth for free, but they had to mock up a fake insurance card for this visit. Charlie (Real Charlie, after Jack brought her back) hooked him up with a sweet new fake ID, which is why âNeal Moriartyâ is getting his first ever eye exam.
âMr. Moriarty?â
Dean sits up, twisting the ring on his finger. Itâs a habit heâs picked up when heâs on edge.Â
The lady smiles, adjusting glasses of her own.
âIâm Dr. Chow, Iâll be helping you out today.â She glances at the clipboard in her hands. âI see youâre 42, never been to the optometrist before?â
Optometristâright, thatâs it.
âYep,â Dean says, with a sheepish grin. âNever had the need, but uhâfigured it was time.â
She sits down, noting some things down before smiling again.
âWell, letâs see if we can get you set up.â
About thirty minutes later, Deanâs leaving the optometrist with a brand new set of glasses. The frames are nice, a sort of brown with specks (tortoiseshell, the lady told him) with a slightly round shape. Itâs a weird adjustment, having something constantly sitting on his faceâbut Dean can finally see.
He feels like heâs in a brand new world. No more squinting, no more struggling to see the road signs. Driving back home, he swears he can see every leaf on every tree, every detail crisp and clear.Â
Christ. He hadnât realized how blind he really was.
Dean drops his keys in the bowl they keep on the side table on the way in, calling out his return.Â
Samâs reaction is expected. He teases him, calls him old man, then gets all serious and tells Dean they really do look good. Dean calls him a bitch, just to hear him snort and throw back âjerkâ in reply.Â
He heads to the war room, where Cas is reading by the light of the lamp, his brow pinched as his eyes whiz back and forth, lightning fast.Â
Dean clears his throat, fiddling with his ring again.
âHey, Cas.â
Cas looks up, smiling.
âDean.â
Then he blinks, up and out of his chair and moving towards Dean. He stops just in front of him, eyes wide.
âYou got your new glasses,â he says, sounding almost breathless.
Dean shrugs, trying to sound nonchalant.
âYup.â
Cas just stares at him.
Dean swallows, shifting his weight.Â
âSo, uhâŠwhatâs the verdict?â
Instead of answering, Cas takes Deanâs face in his hands and kisses him.Â
They part after a moment, and Dean blinks, thoroughly dazed.
Cas brushes a thumb over his cheek.
âI think they look wonderful on you, Dean,â he says, voice low and husky.
âDamn,â Dean says, chuckling. âShoulda gotten these way sooner.â
Cas just nods, smiling as he drinks in the full picture.Â
Then, with a glance over his shoulder, he takes Deanâs hand, tugging him towards their room.
âCome on.â
Dean raises an eyebrow.
âSeriously?â
âYes.â
âCas, itâs like three in the afternoonââ
âI donât care.â
âWow.â Dean grins, but lets himself be pulled along. âYou really like them don't you?â
Cas shuts the door behind them, kissing Dean once more before pushing him back on the bed.
âYouâre leaving those on,â he says, as he unbuttons his shirt.
~
Afterwards, Cas slips into a slight doze, his cheek plastered to Deanâs side. Now that reading doesnât give him a headache, Dean thumbs through a paperback as he waits for the angel currently using him as a pillow to wake up.
Cas stirs, eyes fluttering open.
âSorry,â he says, wiping at his eyes. âI didnât realize I was that tired.â
âItâs okay,â Dean says softly. âI know you stayed up late with Jack last night.â
Cas hums in agreement.
âHe does have an odd schedule.â
Then he sits up fully, just looking at Dean again. Dean sets down the book.
âWhat?â
âNothing,â Cas says with a smile. âJust admiring.â
âDonât say anything sappy, or youâll make me fog up my glasses again,â Dean teases.Â
âI rather liked that,â Cas murmurs, leaning in.
âYou dog,â Dean says back, but accepts Casâs lips as they meet his. They kiss for a moment, lazy and slow.Â
Cas pulls back, stroking at his cheek.
âBut youâre happy, right?â He asks, his eyes earnest. âThey help?â
âOh, yeah.â Dean lifts the book. âItâs awesome. Donât have to squint at this chicken scratch anymore.â
Cas smiles, all soft.
âIâm glad.â
Sam hammers on the door.
âPeople are starting to get here so you better be out and dressed in five minutes or I'm sending Eileen in, naked or not!â He yells.
Dean huffs a laugh, and Cas smirks, giving him a quick peck before pushing himself up.
âSounds like weâre being summoned.â
~
Later, after hugs from Jody and Donna and all the girls, they do gifts. Itâs mostly practical stuff, for his Baby and for the now-occasional hunt. Claire teases him about his glasses for a solid ten minutes, then hands him an impeccably wrapped gift (âPatience helped, okay?â) which turns out to be a copy of Caddyshack II. She appropriately ignores Dean misting up and accepts his bear hug.Â
Garth and Bess bring homemade pie, and Charlie taps into the bunker system to put on a pretty impressive playlist. Rowena drops by towards the end of the night, with a bottle of scotch nearly as old as Dean.Â
Sam sticks a candle in the pie and Eileen brings it to Dean, starting the chorus while everyone joins in. Dean looks around at his family, everyone he loves, and lastly at Cas, whoâs standing at his side, looking at him with such a profound love in his eyes that Dean feels a swell of emotion in his chest. Cas leans in, squeezing Deanâs shoulder before reaching out and readjusting his glasses.

@twoodze asked for â2 smut for destiel <3 Itâs so cliche and I love it.â      #2. âSorry. We only have one room available. Does a king work?â
Read Below or on AO3: Room for One
By the time Deanâs parking baby in front of the motel, heâs exhausted, frustrated, and seriously regretful. This seemed like an easy case. Two dead bodies, witness accounts of temperature drops, and a recent violent murder that connected to both victims. That was the only reason he let Castiel come along when he asked. Sam was sick with a vicious flu and Castiel had that cute little concerned face he gets when Dean wants to hunt alone. Really, though, heâd be better off by himself. Castiel as a human is pretty much a walking disaster. He doesnât have the heart to tell him that, though, so here they are.
Dean glances over at Castiel, releasing his breath in a sigh. The ex-angel is passed out with his head against the impalaâs door. He would look peaceful if it werenât for the bruise blooming on his cheek and the caked blood on his split lip.
Castiel got hurt under his watch. It makes Dean sick.
When Dean opens his door, Castiel jerks awake. He rubs at his eyes and looks over at Dean with a sleepy smile. âSorry. Didnât mean to fall asleep.â
If it was Sam, Dean would make fun of him. Heâd say something about it only being a ten minute car ride from the cemetery to this motel. For good measure, heâd probably tease Sam about losing his edge, about becoming an old man.
Not with Castiel, though.
With Castiel, Deanâs heart catches at the base of his throat. Thereâs not a trace of humor in him. âYouâre fine, Cas. Come on. Letâs get some rooms. Weâll deal with the case in the morning.â
Together, they grab the bags from the car and head inside. The little makeshift office with the hotel desk is dimly lit, the girl working it half asleep as she watches a soap opera. Her eyes flick to Dean and she immediately straightens up with a pretty smile and curious eyes. âWell, hello.â
âHey,â Dean grits back, not in the mood for fake flirting. âWe need two rooms, please.â
Her eyes flick from him to Castiel, then to her computer. She clicks a few buttons and makes a noise like sheâs confirming something. âSorry. We only have one room available. Does a king work?â
Dean wants to ask her why the fuck she thinks one room with a king bed would work when he originally asked for two rooms. When Dean specifically asked for a fucking wall to separate him from the gorgeous blue eyed man who he canât seem to stop thinking about kissing ever since he turned human and moved in with them.
Instead, Dean sighs and shrugs a shoulder. âSure. Fine.â
He takes the key from her and heads back outside to find their room. Castiel hurries behind him. âDean, am I misunderstanding or are we sharing a room?â
âWeâre sharing.â
âLike you and Sam do?â
âYes.â Dean pauses. âWell, no.â
They stop outside the door of room 8 and Dean slips the key in. When they get inside, Castiel stands at the end of the bed and stares at it with wide eyes. âYou and Sam donât share a bed.â
âNope.â
âBut we are?â
âItâs all they had available.â Dean locks the door behind them and tosses his bag on the floor, already slipping out of his flannel and kicking off his boots. âItâs a big bed. Weâll be fine.â
Castiel shuffles nervously, looking at Dean out of the corner of his eye. When Dean catches him he blushes and looks back at the bed. âIâll sleep on the floor.â
Taking one glance at the stained, hard carpeting, Dean shakes his head. âDonât be ridiculous.â
âI understand how you value your personal space, Dean.â
âI-â Dean stops himself before he tells Castiel that he doesnât mind anymore. That Castiel is welcome in his personal space any damn time he wants. After clearing his throat, Dean mumbles, âJust get in the damn bed. I need to piss.â
Before Castiel can argue further, Deanâs gone. He goes to the bathroom, even though he didnât have to, then stares at his reflection in the mirror while the water runs. You can do this, Dean. Itâs one night. Itâs a big bed. Just pretend itâs Sammy.
Feeling better about the situation, Dean actually washes his hands, then takes a deep breath and heads back into the room. The main light is off now, just the small lamp on Deanâs side of the bed left on. Castiel is lying flat on his back, stiff as a board, eyes squeezed shut. It would make Dean laugh if he wasnât so damn nervous himself.
After stripping down to his boxers, Dean slips under the covers. He intends to roll on his side, face the wall, and hopefully fall straight asleep. Instead, his eyes drift over to the human slightly trembling beside him. Heâs still wearing his damn trench coat.
âCas, you donât have to sleep in all your clothes.â
âItâs fine, Dean.â
âItâs not. Youâre human now and you canât bullshit me. Thatâs uncomfortable.â He glances down, seeing two hard bumps at the bottom of the bed. With an eye roll, he grabs the blanket and rips it off Castiel. âAnd youâre still wearing your shoes?â
Castiel blushes, squeezing his eyes hard enough to make his whole face scrunch. With a sigh, Dean rolls off the bed and walks toward the end. He takes one of Castielâs shoes off, then the other, before throwing them both in the direction of his own. After only a slight hesitation, he puts his knee between Castielâs thighs and rests his weight on the bed, hands coming up to undo his belt.
With a jerk of his body, Castielâs eyes fly wide open and his mouth forms an âOâ. âWh - what are you doing, Dean?â
âHelping you get comfortable.â Dean stops just before unbuttoning his pants. âIs this okay?â
Gulping, Dean pops open Castielâs pants, then tugs at the zipper. His hands shake as he slowly slides them down Castielâs long legs. Deanâs thumb accidently brushes the skin of Castielâs ankle when he pulls them off and heâs not sure who jumps harder, him or Castiel.
Then everything freezes. Dean stares at the place where Castielâs cock is tenting his boxers in pure hunger. Castiel stares at it in horror.
Castiel acts first. He puts a hand over himself and quickly gets to his feet, turning his back to Dean. He strips out of his trench coat, suit jacket, tie, dress shirt, and over shirt so that heâs in nothing but his boxers like Dean, then practically dives onto the bed so heâs laying on his stomach. He hurries to yank the blanket over himself, then buries his face in the pillow.
âCas?â
Nothing.
âCas?â
With a tiny whimper, Castiel turns so his cheek is squished against his pillow, blue eyes carefully looking at Dean. âYeah?â
âItâs not a big deal. It happens.â
âI know. It - it happens often.â Dean canât help but start to harden himself at that, wondering how often Castiel has been hard around him. How often heâs walking around the bunker horny. How often he masturbates in his room. Heâs so wrapped up in his own mind, he almost misses Castielâs softly whispered, âEspecially around you.â
Castielâs face turns bright red and he presses it into the pillow again, nearly curling in on himself.
âCas?â
Nothing.
âCas, please look at me.â
âIâm tired.â
âCas.â
Suddenly, Castiel sits up in the bed. âYouâre hot, okay? Youâre hot. Youâre - with the eyes and the arms and the ass. Youâre hot. Youâve always been, but it was manageable as an angel. Now? Now⊠itâs like Iâm on fire when youâre around. And this thing,â he hisses, pointing at his crotch, âDoesnât know how to control itself.â
Speechless from Castielâs explosion, all Dean can think to do is grab his face and tug him into a searing kiss. Castiel releases the most adorable squeak before heâs wrapping himself around Dean and kissing him back. Dean pushes him onto his back so he can hover above him, never parting their lips. His cock rubs against Castielâs through the fabric of his boxers and they both moan, the sound vibrating in their mouths as they explore each other.
Within minutes, theyâre frantic. Castiel is tugging at Deanâs hair and Deanâs nearly ripping Castielâs boxers off. He has to pry Castielâs hands away from his head once his cock is free, giving him a smile sexy enough to steal Castielâs breath. âLet go.â
âWhat - what are you gonna do?â
âLet me go and Iâll show you.â
Castiel hesitates, but then does as told. Dean kisses his way down his chest and stomach. When he presses one against the side of his belly button, Castiel wiggles and laughs a little. Dean arches an eyebrow. âTicklish?â
âKinda,â Castiel says in a hushed whisper, looking at Dean through heavy-lidded eyes. âCanât describe it. Just feels good.â
âGood.â Dean grins. âThis will feel even better.â
Before Castiel can ask what he means, Deanâs ducking his head and wrapping his lips around his cock. Castiel bucks at the unexpected sensation. Itâs wet and hot and.. Holy shit whatâs that? Is that Deanâs tongue? Oh⊠heâs good at that.
After a minute of letting his body relax beneath Deanâs attention, Castiel gets too impatient. He yanks Deanâs hair hard enough for the man to pop up and glare at him. With a quick shuffle, Castiel is grabbing Dean by the biceps and pushing him, rolling them over so heâs on top.
With a few sharp tugs, Castiel has Deanâs boxers off and heâs crawling on top of him. Thereâs no foreplay like with Dean. No kisses on his chest and stomach. He just immediately wraps his lips around Deanâs cock and swallows him down. Dean throws his head back and clenches his fists to keep himself from grabbing Castielâs messy curls and fucking into his mouth.
When Castiel surprisingly takes all of him, letting his cockhead slide to the back of his throat, Dean groans and says, âAlright, up.â
Dean rolls them again and Castiel laughs softly.
âWhat?â Dean asks against his neck, where heâs now trailing open mouthed kisses.
âJust funny that you canât give up control for long.â
âHey now.â Dean pops his head up and glares at Castiel, even as a smile tugs at his lips. âIâm perfectly fine giving up control. I just want to fuck you.â
Whatever Castiel planned to say in return is apparently gone, because all he can do is stare at Dean with his mouth wide open. Then heâs nodding as fast as humanly possible. âYes. Now.â
âNow whoâs impatient?â
âShut up and fuck me Dean Winchester.â Dean makes a tsking sound but smiles as he slips off the bed. âWhere are you going?â
Chuckling at the subtle whine in Castielâs voice, Dean grabs his pants and digs in his pockets. When he returns to the bed, he waves the packet of lube in the air. Castielâs eyes go round as if he just now realized what this means.
Before he rips it open, Dean asks, âAre you sure? We donât have to.â
âWe definitely have to. Iâm sure.â
âAlright. Try to just relax and-â
âI know,â Castiel says quickly, cutting him off.
Deanâs eyes narrow. âYou know? As in youâve done this with some other guy?â
The blushing and nervousness from before comes back and Castiel is looking anywhere but at Dean. âI mean - no. Not - no. Just myself.â
Dean actually has to close his eyes and take a breath - thatâs how fast more blood rushes to his cock at the idea of Castiel playing with his own hole. Then heâs ripping the packet apart and squeezing lube all over his two fingers.
He pushes Castielâs legs up toward his chest and spreads them. Just the simple act alone makes Castiel moan and shiver. When Dean gently rubs a finger around his rim, Castiel closes his eyes and starts to breathe heavy. His hole doesnât even resist when Dean pushes in, and Castiel helps even more by moving his hips to press down.
âFucking hell, Cas,â Dean groans. âYouâre so needy.â
Castiel bites his bottom lip and peers down at him. âSorry.â
âDonât be. Itâs hot.â As if to prove his point, Dean slides in a second finger beside the first. He can tell heâs not going to have to do much more to get Castiel comfortable enough for his cock, but heâs loving his reactions too much to pull out. He takes his time to build up the pressure on his prostate, smiling each time Castiel whimpers or bucks his hips or moans.
âWhen you do this, do you have a toy or do you use your fingers?â
âBoth,â Castiel pants.
âDo you pretend itâs me?â That adorable blush creeps back across Castielâs cheeks and down his throat, and Dean knows his answer. âWhat do you pretend Iâm doinâ to you, Cas? Is it this? Or more?â
Castiel blinks at him like heâs in shock. âBoth. Usually - usually more.â
âYeah? You want more?â
âDean, please. Need you.â
Heâs heard those words before from Castiel. Theyâve always managed to seize his heart. This is different though. The power behind them is too great.
âYeah, okay angel,â Dean whispers. He notices how Castiel reacts to the pet name, loving the way he nibbles on the bottom lip of a smile.
Squeezing the rest of the lube packet onto his cock, Dean strokes it a few times and guides it to Castielâs opening. They lock eyes and take a breath in sync. Then Dean slowly slides into him, taking his time and rolling his hips as he moves.
By the time heâs fully inside him, heâs not sure who is more impatient - him or Castiel. Itâs like a switch flips and theyâre suddenly all tongue and teeth and nails. Castiel is lifting his legs to let Dean in deeper, and Dean is fucking him like his life depends on it.
Castiel hisses when Dean bites the apex of his shoulder, scratching down his back in return. It drives Dean wild and he pulls away, gripping Castielâs hips tight enough to bruise and spreading his legs nice and wide. Moving back until his cock is just inside Castielâs tight rim, Dean locks eyes with him and grins.
âI wonder if I can fuck you hard enough to make you come untouched.â
âI- ooooh-â Whatever Castiel planned to say is lost when Dean ever so slowly enters him, pressing against his prostate in the best possible way.
He pulls back again, grin widening. âJust wanted to check the angle.â
ââS perfect,â Castiel slurs, moving his hips in an effort to get Dean to fuck him.
Dean just sits back and watches for a while, appreciating the view as Castiel fucks himself the best he can on Deanâs cock. âYou know this is it, right?â Dean finds himself saying.
âThis is what?â
âI became an expert at resisting you. At keeping my feelings in check. But itâs over now. Youâre perfect and Iâm not letting you go.â
Castielâs breath hitches and his hips pause. âReally? You want me? Like really want me?â
âYeah.â Dean stares down at where his cock is resting just an inch inside Castiel. Heâs panting from the effort of staying still, not wanting to ruin the moment. âIf you want me,â he adds, suddenly terrified.
âIf I want you?â Castiel asks on an incredulous breath. âDean, all Iâve ever wanted is you.â
When Dean feels tears pricking his eyes, he holds Castiel tight and starts to fuck him. He will not cry. No chick flick moments. Instead, he focuses on what he knows. What heâs good at. Fucking someone out of their mind.
And he does well. By the time Deanâs close to coming, Castiel is a mewling, shivering mess. He stopped forming coherent words long ago. All he does now is make noises and stare up at Dean with wide blue eyes full of amazement.
Dean notices the second those eyes shift into something more. He knows before Castiel even yells a half-panicked, half-relieved, ââM gonna come.â
âGood.â Dean speeds up. âCome for me, angel.â
âOh,â Castiel whispers, his eyes sliding closed at the nickname. He exhales once and then his body bows in Deanâs hands. His cum flies through the air between them, landing all over his own stomach and chest. A few drops even get on his chin.
Moaning, Dean leans forward and licks at the cum on Castielâs face. Then he presses his lips to his in a rough kiss and bucks into him twice more before stilling, buried as deep as possible inside him. Castiel moans and bites Deanâs lip, then licks the spot.
As Dean comes down from his high, he rests on his elbows and presses his forehead against Castielâs shoulder. They both suck in deep, shaky breaths until their bodies have calmed. Then Dean is gently pulling out and rolling off Castiel. He stands up, about to grab a towel from the bathroom to clean them, but stops when he sees Castielâs face.
âWhere are you going?â Castiel whispers, sounding more like a small child than a former angel turned man.
Deanâs heart nearly breaks. âJust to the bathroom, angel.â
âI thought you were leaving.â
âNo, Cas.â Dean leans down, pressing a firm kiss to Castielâs sweaty forehead. Castiel hums in happiness and relaxes. âIâm never going to leave you. I promise.â

âNew crop of cadets coming in today.â
âI know.â
Charlie bites into her apple, munching as she scans her screen.
âHope theyâre better than the last ones. Half of âem couldnât tell the difference between a spectrometer and an ammeter.â
Castiel doesnât comment. Heâs too on edge to indulge Charlie today, so he just shrugs, swiveling his chair back in front of the control panel.
Everythingâs on autopilot, like always, but he likes to check the nav-console by hand, every once in a while, if nothing but to prove his usefulness. Wouldn't do to have the computer shift a few degrees without anyone noticing and end up halfway to Alpha Centauri.
âI mean, what do they think we do up here? Run pretty tests for fun?â Charlie continues. âLike, one leak is the difference between life and death.â
Castiel makes a noncommittal noise and starts typing in the complicated sequence with his stylus, the starmap projected before him, their course pulsing with gentle blue light.
âI mean, theyâre gone for all that time, least the Academy can do is make sure theyâre prepared.â
Castiel bites his tongue, typing with perhaps a little more force than is necessary. He loves Charlie, but her ranting is really starting to get to him. Castiel might be the best pilot this side of the Pleiades, but hey. Heâs only human.
âIf they send me one more programmer who asks me how to do an abstraction, Iâm going toââ
âCharlie, do you mind?â Castiel snaps. âIâm trying to concentrate here.â
He regrets it immediately. Charlie does go quiet, but makes a thoroughly overdramatic roll of her chair into Castielâs eyeline. She raises an eyebrow.
âSomethinâ you wanna share with the class there, bud?â
Castiel exhales, rolling his shoulders.
âSorry. I just...need to focus.â
â...Right.â
A decidedly sneaky look crosses her face, one that Castiel knows spells trouble.
She leans forward, propping her chin up on her hands.
âIs it because you gotta do the whole âCaptain Thingâ later?â She asks. âShake hands, greet the greets, that whole deal?â
Castiel acquiesces.
âPartly.â
He quickly finishes the rest of the code and enters it into the nav-console, sinking back in his seat. Charlie purses her lips.
âAnd Iâm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the teaching staff is coming back, huh.â
Castiel keeps his face carefully neutral, even as he feels the back of his neck grow hot. He fiddles with the stylus in his hands, turning it over and over again.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âUh-huh.â
Charlie taps her chin, looking thoughtful.
âWhatâs it been, two years?â She whistles, drawing it out. âLong time.â
Castiel just grunts. He should be getting up, to change into his uniform for the new batch of arrivals, but he makes no attempt to move.
âDeanâs coming back, too, right?â
Castiel snaps the stylus in half.
Charlie grins.
Castiel looks down at his hand, shoving the broken stylus into his pocket.
âIf he is, I havenât heard anything about it,â he says loftily. âAnd whether he does or not certainly doesnât affect me.â
Charlie tilts her head.
âDidnât they send the transfer roster last week?â
Castiel glares at her. She smirks back, giving him a cheeky wink.
Castiel abruptly pushes back from the console, standing.
âI have to go change,â he says shortly.
Once he gets to his quarters and the door slides closed behind him, Castiel sinks back against it, dropping his head in his hands.
Two years. Two years since Castiel chose to stay, and he chose to leave. Two years, of long lonely nights in front of the computer, of avoiding the Observation Deck, of throwing himself into his work. Two years in which Castiel thought heâd successfully ridded every last trace of Dean Winchester from his life.
After that night, Castiel had thrown away everything heâd ever given him. Every trinket, every gift, every scrap of paperâpathetic trophies of infatuation that Castiel had saved like a fool, pressed between the pages of his books.
The rest of the ship noticed, of course, because how could they notâCharlie, especially, had been particularly persistent in trying to get Castiel to tell her what happened. But Castiel resolutely refused to talk about him, and glowered sufficiently at any mention of his name that eventually people just learned to stop bringing him up.
But time marches ever onward, and the training cycle at the Academy is complete. The institution that Dean fled to in the first place is now spitting him back out, thrusting him back into Castielâs life.
Castiel presses the heels of his hands to his eyes. How is he going to stand in front of nearly three hundred people and shake his hand? Just the mention of his name made Castiel want to throw something, bringing back all those memories Castiel tried so hard to forget. It may have been two years, but everything that made the man named Dean Winchester the best part of his life is still imprinted in Castielâs memory, like a brand.
Itâs times like this when Castiel wishes he could be like one of Charlieâs computers, erasing all information at the touch of a button. There would be no pain, no memoriesâlike he had never existed in the first place.
Castiel exhales, looking down at his hands.
Heâll just have to make it quick. It really wouldnât do for the captain to start a fistfight in front of the entire crew.
x
Roughly thirty minutes later, Castiel finds himself standing stiffly at the end of the receiving line of officers, the collar of his uncomfortable dress uniform cutting into his neck. Something must be off with the temperature regulators in the receiving deck, because heâs sweating, a few locks of hair slipping loose from his hat. He attempts to comb them back into place until Naomi hisses at him to stop fidgeting.
Charlie is beside him as Chief Engineering Officer. She cranes her neck above the crowd, looking at the small group thatâs just disembarked from the transport ship.
âShowtime,â she says, adjusting her gloves.
Castiel closes his eyes briefly, breathing in. He can do this.
The new ones pass through first, freshly graduated, young and starry-eyed. Castiel can appreciate their eager enthusiasm. Itâs important work they do here on the ship, and they need the best crew to make it possible. They shake his hand vigorously, hopefully interpreting his tight-lipped stare as stoic strength.
Then, the officers.
Hannah, who Castiel has always liked, gives him a warm smile and clasps his hands, telling him how much they missed him. Castiel agrees with the sentiment, but he can barely focus during their conversation, continually darting his eyes towards the end of the line.
The procession inches forward, painfully slow. Cain, Chief Military Strategist, is next, then Billie, and Linda Tran. Crowley, a truly despicable human being, but perhaps the most brilliant Flight Engineer Castielâs ever worked with, passes with a slimy smileâand then, a face Castiel hasnât seen in a long time.
âCaptain Novak,â Sam says warmly, reaching out to shake his hand. âItâs been a while.â
Castiel smiles back, unable to help himself.
âIt has,â he agrees, taking his hand. Despite whatever may have happened between him and his brother, Castiel always liked Sam. âI canât tell you how much weâve missed you during your absence.â
Sam nods, dropping Castielâs hand.
âBelieve me, we missed it here, too,â he says, smiling. âYou never know how good you have it until you have to spend time way out in the boonies.â
Castiel chuckles. He remembers. The time at the Academy might be necessary, but it certainly couldnât be called comfortable.
Sam turns, indicating the cadets behind them.
âWeâve got a good group for you here, Cas,â he says, dropping the nickname with easy familiarity. âI think youâll be happy with them.â
âGood to hear,â Castiel replies. âIâm sure they benefited from having you as a teacher.â
Sam shrugs, ever modest.
Naomi clears her throat from behind them, not-so-subtly encouraging him to move it along. Sam smiles and gives Castiel a small little salute, moving away.
Castiel sighs, tugging at his collar. To his left, he hears a low chuckle.
âStill hate that uniform, huh?â
Castiel stiffens.
Heâd know that voice anywhere.
He slowly lowers his hand, looking up into the face he tried two years to forget.
âHey, Cas,â Dean says softly, smiling.
His eyes are bright, shining, like he wants to be here. Funny. Castiel seems to remember he went halfway across the star system just to get away from him.
He extends a hand, holding it out for Castiel to shake.
Castiel clears his throat, but doesnât move.
âDr. Winchester,â he replies stiffly. âWelcome back.â
Dean chuckles.
âOh, right,â he says sheepishly. âI gotta call you âCaptain Novakâ, now, huh? Sorry.â
He looks up, that soft smile returning.
âOld habits, I guess,â he murmurs.
His hand is still extended, in the distance between them. Naomi must be practically foaming at the mouth at such a lack of decorum. Castiel couldnât care less.
Dean looks exactly the same, perhaps a few more lines around his eyes, still that perfect shade of green. Dean's eyes always reminded Castiel of Earth.
Dean seems to be thinking along the same lines. He looks Castiel up and down, gaze lingering for a moment on the few locks of hair Castiel knows must still be stubbornly escaping from beneath the brim of his hat.
âYou havenât changed at all,â Dean continues. âEven after two years.â
âAnd three months, six days,â Castiel says coolly.
Deanâs smile fades a little.
âRight.â
He pulls back his hand, awkwardly picking at the edge of the hat in his hands.
Castielâs heart is beating wildly, but he keeps his face still as stone. Dean shifts uncomfortably, then seems to make a decision.
He leans in, lowering his voice.
âLook, Cas, you know I always hated this formal junk,â he murmurs. âCan we talk later, maybe?â
He sounds so cavalier, so oblivious, and Castiel hates it.
âCatch up?â Dean asks. âAway from all these people?â
Castiel gives him his coldest stare.
âI donât think so, Dr. Winchester,â he says sharply. âRunning this ship is a full time job.â
Dean blinks, and he stares at him, looking like heâs just been slapped across the face. The monster of heartache and pain inside Castiel roars with a vicious triumph.
âI have enough on my plate as it is,â he continues dismissively. âI simply donât have time to indulge every junior officer who wants to waste my time.â
He straightens, looking away disinterestedly.
âYouâd do best to remember that.â
For a moment, Dean doesnât speak, merely staring at Castiel, his mouth open in disbelief.
Then he remembers himself, and with a glance at Naomi, he stands up straight, placing his officerâs hat back on his head.
âYeah,â Dean mutters, lowering his eyes. âWell.â
Thereâs an awkward cough from Charlie to his left. Castiel ignores her.
âItâs good to see you, again, Cas,â Dean murmurs. âReally.â
Somehow, he makes it sound genuine.
He exits the platform, quickly disappearing into the crowd.
Castiel watches Dean go an uneasy curl in his throat. The brief flare of vengeful satisfaction is already leeching away, leaving him feeling brittle and hollow.
Naomi is already busy shooing the officers into the reception hall, for the welcome banquet. Charlie finds Castielâs arm and squeezes it, her eyes sympathetic.
âCas?â She asks quietly. âYou okay?â
Castiel clenches his jaw.
âThink I might have to get back to you on that."
x
Later, after the banquet, after three hours of restless tossing and turning, Castiel slowly gets up, not bothering with shoes.
Wandering the hallways used to be his favorite pastime. The quiet, the stillness. He still does it, on occasion, when he finds sleep isnât easy in coming. The lights that try to mimic some semblance of a day and night cycle are dimmed low, the halls empty, most retired to their chambers.
Castiel makes his way up to the Observation Deck, taking a brief look around. Thereâs no one there, no one to spy on the captain of their ship, stealing away in the night for some much needed solitude. He walks the ramp to the very top part of the observatory, leaning his arms on the handrail. Castiel used to spend hours here. He would sit and watch the stars turn, feeling at once very small and very infinite. He sits now, staring out at the vast darkness before him. Itâs utterly quiet, the electric hum of the ship the only sound in the gloom.
Unbidden, his thoughts turn to the last conversation he had here.
Castiel had just learned he had been chosen to be the next Captain, a highly selective process that he had stressed about for weeks. The first person he wanted to tell was Dean.
But Dean had come with news of his own.
A teaching job at the Academy. Highly prestigious, second probably only to Castielâs roleâbut that meantâ
âTwo years,â Dean said to his hands, his voice flat. âThatâs how long Iâd be gone.â
Castiel felt his brief taste of happiness deflate like a suit after a spacewalk.
âTwo years?â He echoed, his tongue thick in his mouth. Dean nodded mutely.
âThatâsâŠâ
Castiel bit his lip.
âWow,â is all he managed.
âYeah,â Dean muttered.
There was a long moment where neither of them spoke.
âSoâŠâ
Castiel hardly dared to say it.
âIâm guessing you knew that when you applied,â he said flatly.
Dean nodded mutely.
âDidnât really account for you becoming the Captain,â he muttered.
Anger flared within Castiel.
âWhat, because you think I wouldnât get it?â
âNo!â Dean said immediately, looking up. âGod, no, Cas, of course not. Why would you think that?â
âIâm thinking a lot of things right now,â Castiel shot back.
Dean shut his mouth angrily.
âI guess...I guess itâs just hitting me how long two years really is,â he said finally.
Castiel sucked in a breath, stunned.
âYouâre not serious,â he whispered. Dean dragged a hand down his face, avoiding his eyes.
âI donât know, Cas!â He said, voice rising in the quiet. âI mean...youâll have your job, Cas, I'll have mine...who knows if youâll have any time for meââ
âOh, I wonât have time for you?â Castiel repeated scathingly. God, he should have known, itâs just like Deanâshove the blame off himself and project it onto Castiel instead of owning his feelings like an adult.
âJust say you donât want to be with me and get it over with,â he snapped.
âCasâŠâ Dean started.
Castiel couldnât breathe. He couldnât believe this was happening.
Dean sighed, breath shaky.
âIââ
Castiel looked up.
He saw the look in Deanâs eyes and he didnât let him finish. He didnât let him break his heart.
He ran like a coward.
Castiel wipes angrily at his eyes, banishing the memory. He canât change the past, so he might as well not dwell on it.
He looks up, at the wilderness of the stars. They shimmer gently against the blank expanse, his constant companions. Castiel can tell you the distance between Betelguese and Rigel, can calculate the time it would take to travel to Sirius and back, but he could never navigate his own life so surely.
If only humans could be as constant as the Heavens.
Behind him, the floor creaks softly. Castiel goes still.
âHey, Cas,â Dean murmurs.
Castiel turns, glancing over his shoulder.
Dean is standing at the end of the platform, in his sleep pants and shirt. He looks so different out of his uniform. Softer. More like himself.
âDean,â Castiel says, unable to stop the name from coming to his lips.
Dean responds with a bashful smile, one hand twisting nervously into the hem of his shirt.
âFigured I'd find you here."
He glances out at the stars, then back to Castiel.
âYou mind if I join you?â
Castiel swallows, but looks away, saying nothing.
Dean seems to take that as permission, and sits, legs hanging over the edge of the deck, next to Castiel.
There once was a time when theyâd sit close enough for their knees to knock, their hands lacing over the railing as Dean told stories, weaving grand tales of the constellations and their histories, while Castiel listened, enraptured.
Now the distance of that memory feels vast, lightyears away. Theyâre both quiet, not speaking a word. The silence is thin, fragile as glass.
âCasââ
So Dean will be the one to break it.
He pauses, brow furrowing as he searches for words. Castiel bristles, waiting for it.
âLook,â Dean says, turning to face him. âI get it. You donât want anything to do with me. Butââ
Dean goes silent beside him. When Castiel finally musters the courage to look up, Dean is staring at him, hopeless and broken.
âCan you at least let me explain?â His voice comes out low and hoarse.
Castiel is torn. Half of him melts, seeing Dean so desperate. But the other half, the rational part of him that remembers the danger of falling for Dean Winchester cautions him, telling him the smartest thing he can do right now is walk away, and never open his heart again.
He lowers his head, exhaling heavily.
âI canât,â he mutters. âDean, I justâŠcanât.â
âYouâre angry,â Dean says softly. Castiel scoffs.
âYouâre damn right I'm angry,â he mutters. âAnd I donât care about any half-assed apology you have for me, not now. Too little, too late.â
He moves back from the railing, pushing himself up. Tears are starting to come to his eyes, hot and bitter, and heâll be damned if heâll let Dean see him cry.
âCas, waitââ
He reaches out, grabbing his hand.
Castiel freezes, rooted to the spot. Dean is frozen too, looking down at their joined hands. He doesnât let go, though.
âJust...slow down, will ya?â Dean says, and thereâs a hint of a laugh there, the way he always sounded when he would talk Castiel off the ledge. But now, it only ignites the rage inside him, and Castiel rips his arm from Deanâs grasp, whirling on him.
âNo!â Castiel yells, shattering the silence. âYou left, and you donât get to do this now, you donât get to come waltzing back into my life like everythingâs fineââ
Deanâs eyes widen, he holds up his hands.
âCasââ
âYou broke up with me, remember?â
âNo, I didnât, Cas, will you shut up for two seconds and listen?â
Surprisingly, Castiel does. He blinks, slightly stunned at Deanâs words.
What is he talking about?
âLook,â Dean says quickly, probably to prevent Castiel from shouting again. âI only applied to the stupid Academy because Sammy was tooâhe was freaking out about the process, so I did it with him, just to show him it was nothing. Heâs the smart one, so never in a million years did I think theyâd choose me, too.â
Castiel crosses his arms, huffing under his breath. Even if he does hate him right now, it always hurts to hear Dean undersell himself.
âThe moment I found out, all I wanted to do was talk to my best friend about how fucking scared I was.â Dean sighs. âAnd then you said you were picked to be Captain, and it all just...seemed too much.â
He looks down, twisting his hands.
âI panicked. Godâsomehow had it in my mind that the minute I told you you wouldnât want to be with me, that there wouldnât be any room in your life for me anymore. And seeing your face in that moment, you were so excited, and then it just slid off your faceâŠ"
Castiel remembers. Shit, he had been so happy, so proudâand when Dean told himâŠ
Heâd never been good at hiding his feelings, not with Dean.
He turns over their last conversation in his mind and all at once it seems to click, now that he knows what Dean must have thought.
âI jumped to conclusions,â Dean admits quietly. âI was...so afraid you wouldnât want to do the long distance thing for two years so IâŠ.kind of...let you break us up before I could.â
Castiel stares at him, a painful bubble of emotion rising in his throat. Oh.
Dean continues.
âIf anything, I wanted you to ask me to stay.â He lowers his head, dragging a hand through his short hair. âWhich was wrong. I get that now.â
He looks up, huffing out a feeble laugh.
âBelieve me, Cas,â he says lowly. âIt took me all of about an hour to realize how badly I fucked up. But by that time the solar flares were surging and we had to go.â
Dean bites at his lip.
âI looked for you. I tried. But you had locked yourself away in a meeting and I didnât get to say goodbye. You didnât let me,â he finishes, a sad bitter note in his voice.
Castiel cannot speak, in shock. He never knew. Heâd always thought...after that conversation, that Dean had left without so much as a glance back.
âYouâŠâ
He eventually trails off. He has no words.
Dean takes a tentative step forward.
âAnd you know what itâs like out there. The distances are too far, so they restrict communication.â He shrugs, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. âDoesnât mean I didnât try, though.â
âWhat?â Castiel asks.
âI tried to send transmissions back,â Dean says, rushing out the words. âEvery day for a month. They kept telling me personal messages werenât allowed. I even tried to break into the control center after hours.â
âDean,â Castiel breathes, awed and horrified all at once. âYou didnât.â
Dean chuckles.
âNearly got myself tossed out of the airlock for that one.â
His teeth return to his lip again, his green eyes hesitant.
âSam said I was crazy. I just told him heâd never been in love.â
Castiel's throat goes dry.
Theyâd never said, not even before Dean left. But Castiel knew he was. Only love leaves that big and jagged of a hole.
âThatâs why,â he says softly. âWhy I never heard from you the whole two years.â
âAnd three months, and six days,â Dean says quietly.
Castiel bites his lip.
âYeah,â Dean says softly. âI was counting, too.â
He sighs, spreading his hands.
âSo, yeah. I messed up. And I get it if you never want to talk to me again, I justââ
Dean never finishes his speech because he doesn't need to. In three swift steps, Castiel has reached him and pulled him in by the front of his shirt.
Dean makes a soft noise of surprise as Castiel presses their lips together, but he quickly gets on board, pulling Castiel in by his waist, kissing him back. And he no longer needs to dream about Deanâs warmth, his lips underneath his, the dry rough touch of his palm coming to cup Castielâs cheek. Heâs here, and heâs real, and heâs never going to let him get away again.
Dean pulls back slightly, pressing his forehead against Castielâs
âDamn,â he breathes. âI missed that.â
Castiel tightens his grip.
âDean, Iâm so sorry,â he whispers.
âYeah,â Dean chuckles. âSo am I.â
He licks his lips, looking down at Castielâs.
âI was an idiot,â he murmurs, and the sound rumbles through his chest. Castiel shivers.
âI should have just told you,â Dean finishes, shaking his head slightly.
âYes,â Castiel says, bumping their noses together. âYou should have.â
Dean laughs, and itâs possibly the most beautiful sound Castielâs ever heard.
âThereâs the asshole I remember.â
They both grin, just basking in their closeness, breathing quietly.
âSo.â
âSo.â
Castiel clears his throat.
âSo, this whole time, we wanted to be with each other and we just...werenât.â
Dean chuckles.
âSounds like it.â
âWow.â
Castiel shakes his head.
âWeâre a couple of dumbasses.â
Dean laughs again.
âSums up the last fifteen years of us knowing each other.â He reaches out tentatively, fingers brushing Castielâs. âDonât you think?â
Castiel smiles, turning his hand up so Dean can thread their fingers together. He knows they so much they still have to say, so much to catch up on to fix everything thatâs broken between them.
By a backdrop of stars, Dean kisses him once more, and well, thatâs as good a start as any.
Day Four (A little late) : Little Kid!Cas and little Kid!Dean writing their letters to Santa
** pardon the bad art again, guys. I'm broke and doing these on index cards and cheap colored pencils đŹđŹ **
LETTER TO SANTA:
Castiel nearly slips on a patch of ice as he runs to the mailbox with his letter. Gabriel told him it's already too late, but that's not what his best friend Dean said last night when they worked on theirs together. Dean said you can write to Santa all the way up to Christmas because he has a super special kind of magic.
Just before reaching the end of his driveway, he sees Dean next door playing with his brother. He waves his letter in the air and yells. "DEAN! DEAN! LOOK! I finished!"
His very best friend in the whole wide world comes barreling forward, pulling out a crinkled and bent letter of his own from the pocket of his winter coat. "ME TOO!"
He takes the opportunity from the excitement to hug Cas tight. He's been doing that a lot lately. Yesterday, he even kissed Cas on the cheek while they walked home from school together. It made Cas nearly fall over as his face turned bright red and breathy giggles took over.
"Come on!" Dean squealed, tugging his hand. They stumble toward Cas' mailbox since it's closest and he stuffs his letter into it. Cas flips up the red flag because that's what his dad always does after putting mail in there. Then he squeezes Dean's hand, and they walk together to the other mailbox.
"What did you end up askin' for?" Dean asks as they slightly swing their joined hands between them. He knows his friend was having trouble deciding between two things. Both of their dads told them Santa doesn't have as many elves as usual this year, so they can't get a lot from him. Cas had a hard time narrowing it down.
He puffs his chubby cheeks and releases a sigh. "I went with the guniea pig. I'll ask for the robot at my birthday."
"Good choice!"
"What did you pick?"
After careful consideration over a slice of his mom's apple pie, Dean had figured his out. He was confident in his decision. "The guitar. That way I can play it for my dad."
"And me too?" Cas asks with hope.
Dean giggles and pulls his best friend in close as they get to his mailbox. "Of course! Hey, I have a good name for your guinea pig!"
"What?"
"Zeppelin! Oh, or Kansas! Or Floyd. Or-"
"No." Cas shakes his head at him. "You're weird."
"Well, what are you gonna name it then?"
Cas looks at him in confusion, like he should know this. "Bumblebee."
"But it's... it's a guinea pig, Cas."
Those blue eyes blink at him in a blank stare. "So?
Dean looks at his friend in wonder. Sometimes he forgets how perfectly pure his best friend is. "Never mind. I think the name is perfect."
Captain Mills calls them all to attention, flipping through the slides on her screen.
âCIs found us a big lead in the Brady case. We know heâs been smuggling drugs across the border, but word is the man himself is planning a drop tomorrow night. Bella Notte on 5th. If we can catch him in the act, we can finally arrest him,â she finishes, her eyes steely.
âBoo yah, Iâm in,â Charlie says, immediately shooting her hand up. âWhoâs with me?â
âCharlie, youâre not a cop,â Henriksen says tiredly. âYouâre an administrative assistant.â
âWhatevs, Sarge,â Charlie replies, shrugging. âDoesnât mean I canât kick some ass.â
âI want Novak on this,â Captain Mills says. âHe was the lead detective on the work that got us here in the first place.â
Castiel allows himself a tiny proud smile, and Charlie nudges him, grinning.
âAndâŠ.Winchester.â
Castielâs smile drops.
âYou know the drill,â Mills says, ignoring Castielâs suddenly stony expression. âPark yourself outside the restaurant. Go in when he does, see if we canât catch him in the act.â
She scans the assembled detectives, calling out a few names.
âLafitte, Harvelle, youâll be in the surveillance van.â
With that, the Captain dismisses them, and Charlie leans back, crossing her arms.
âWell, this is going to be interesting.â
People slowly file out of the briefing room, going back to their various tasks, and Castiel glances at her, raising an eyebrow.
âHow so?â
She shrugs.
âYou said he bothers you.â
âHe does not bother me,â Castiel responds testily, pushing back from the table, standing. âHeâs just a stuck up, arrogant man, and entirely way too confident in his own abilities as a detective.â
âAnd funny,â Charlie says slyly. Castiel frowns.
âWhat?â
She gives him a look.
âCâmon, dude. You may pretend to hate him, but you laugh at his jokes as much as I do.â
âIâno. Thatâs ridiculous,â Castiel says quickly. âDean and I are merelyââ
âTalking about me?â
Castiel sets his jaw, grinding his teeth.
He turns, glaring.
âDetective Winchester.â
Dean just smiles back at Castielâs stormy expression, in a bright, irritating sort of way.
âGotta say, Iâm looking forward to this. Been too long since Iâve been on stakeout duty.â He smirks, tucking his hands in his pockets. âAnd I do love Italian food.â
Castiel shakes his head.
âUh uh. No way. There will be none of your usual goofing around, you got that? Iâve been chasing this guy for way too long for your unprofessional behavior to blow this.â
Dean places a hand on his chest, mock offended.
âCas, Iâm wounded. Unprofessional? Me?â
âYou tried to get a suspect to confess by blasting Air Supply at him,â Castiel says dryly.
âWell, yeah,â Dean says. âButââ
âThat gum disaster was the reason I had to cut my hair,â Charlie chimes in helpfully. Dean huffs.
âThat was not my faultââ
âAnd of course, that ridiculousness on Halloween,â Castiel says.
âHey,â Dean says, holding up a hand. âYou were just as into that as I was.â
Castiel narrows his eyes.
âWhatever.â
He jabs his finger in Deanâs chest.
âJust donât screw things up.â
x
Hour three in a stuffy van with four cops is starting to get unbearable. And only a little bit because of Deanâs proximity to Cas. Only a little.
Benny has his eyes trained on the restaurant, peeking through a pair of binoculars.
âThereâs our guy,â he says.
Dean grabs the binoculars. Sure enough, Brady is getting out of a swanky car and striding towards the restaurant. Cas reaches for the vanâs door.
âLetâs go.â
âAre you kidding?â Dean grabs his wrist, pulling him back.Â
âWe canât go in, we look like cops.â He snorts. âEspecially you, Eliot Ness.âÂ
Cas frowns, glancing down. Dean shakes his head.Â
âYou gotta lose the trench.â
âI like my coat,â Cas says defensively.
âDude,â Dean scoffs. âThatâs like Cop 101. You might as well sit in his lap and tell him youâre with the NYPD.â
Cas glares at him, but shucks the coat, revealing aâ
âAnd the suit jacket, too,â Dean says. âJesus, two jackets??â
âItâs winter,â Castiel protests weakly, but he does as commanded, and god thatâs even worse, because now heâs left with just a white dress shirt and a blue tie that brings out his eyes.
âHereââ
Jo twists in her seat, helping Cas roll up his sleeves, and for good measure, rakes a hand through his hair.
âNow you look ready for a night out,â she says, smirking.
Cas looks to Dean, raising an eyebrow.
âWell? Satisfactory?â
Dean clears his throat.
âYou lookâyou look good,â he chokes out.
Benny rolls his eyes.
Dean strips off his NYPD issued jacket, sourly wishing he had left the jeans at home. He and Cas exit the van, and are soon in the entrance area of the restaurantâand thereâs their perp right in front of them.
âLetâs go,â Cas says, stepping forwardâjust as Brady links arms with a pretty brunette, and theyâre led away into the dimly lit interior of the restaurant.
âShit,â Cas hisses. âHeâs here for a date, not a goddamn dropoff.â
âThen we get a table,â Dean says, and steps up to the hostess.
âHi, there,â he says, flashing her his most charming smile. âTable for two, please.â
She doesnât even look up.
âIâm sorry,â she says, not sounding sorry at all. âWeâre completely booked solid. And we do have, uhââ She glances down, giving Dean a once over. âA certain dress code here, sir.â
Dean bristles, about a half a second away from flashing his badge, when Cas slides in close next to him, linking his arm through Deanâs.
âOh no, thatâs horrible,â he says, turning his lips down into a pout. âTonightâs a really important night.â
Dean gawks at him, trying to figure out what the hell Cas is playing at, when he says the next words.
âWe just got engaged,â Castiel says, smiling at the hostess. âAnd this is where our first date was.â
Dean just barely stops his jaw from dropping.
The hostess looks to Dean, her eyes going wide. He hastily clears his throat.
âAnd I meanâI wouldâve made a reservation, but Iâwasnât sure he was going to say yes,â he stammers out.
âYou were so nervous,â Castiel says, leaning in, his lips brushing Deanâs cheek.
The hostess lets out a soft awwww, her eyes going soft. Dean barely notices. Heâs utterly frozen, staring at Cas, his cheek tingling.
âOh, well, donât you worry!! Iâm sure I could find a place for such a nice couple as yourselves,â she coos, suddenly all smiles and sweetness.
She swans off, and Castiel immediately pulls his arm from Deanâs. Dean doesnât miss the warmth. Not at all.
âIâm sorry,â Cas apologizes fervently. âIs that okay? I just knew theyâve had issues lately with their image, and Iâm sure theyâll want to look all trendy and tolerantâŠ.â He sighs, and Dean can practically hear the eye roll in his voice. âI didnât mean to presumeââ
âNo, uhââ
Cas tilts his head, watching him. Dean swallows.
âIt wouldnât matter anyway. Iâm not averse to guys. Kinda the opposite. Iâm verse to them. I meanâwellâIâm bi,â he finishes lamely. He should really shut up now.
But Cas is smirking.
âYeah. I figured.â
âWaitââ
Dean doubletakes.
âWhat do you mean you figuredââ
âGreat news!â The hostess says, popping up at his elbow. âWe found a table!â
Casâs hand instantly finds Deanâs.
âIsnât that great, honey?â He asks sweetly. âThey found us a table.â
The hostess waves them towards the main part of the restaurant, and Dean plasters a smile on his face.
âHoney?â He whispers out of the corner of his mouth.
âIâm improvising, sue me,â Cas shoots back.
The hostess leads them to what looks like the fanciest part of the restaurant, and seats them at a table next toâwho else, but their fucking mark. Of course.
âHowâs this?â She asks cheerily. Dean tries to look anywhere but at Brady and his date.
âItâs perfect, thank you,â Castiel says swiftly. He glares at Dean, sinking into one of the chairs.
Dean sits too, feeling Casâs stare starting to drill a hole in his head. Yes, he knows that canât very well discuss their next move with their target in earshot. Brady looks pretty engrossed with his date for now, but you never know.
âWell, hon,â Dean says, smiling tightly. âWhat next? Hmm?â
âI donât know,â Cas answers thinly. âMaybe we should just sit, and watch.â
âA movie,â Dean blurts. âAfter this. A movie.â
Cas blinks at him, then nods.
âYes, of course. A movie. If anything interesting comes up, I guess weâll check it out.â
Dean gives him an exaggerated wink. His heartâs beating a mile a minute, but with nothing for it to sit and wait, he leans forward, grabbing the menu.
âLetâs see what they got for appetizers, eh?â
Cas leans forward.
âSeriously?â He lowers his voice. âNow isnât exactly the time.â
âWonder if they have a burger,â Dean muses to himself, ignoring Casâs tone.
Of course, it all gets shot to hell when the waiter comes back with a huge bottle of champagne.
âOn the house,â he gushes. âFor the happy couple on their engagement!â
He plops the thing in front of them, and Dean canât even muster up a thank you, gaping. Cas isnât doing much better.
Bradyâs date, however, squeals and places her hand over her heart.
âOh my god. You just got engaged??? Thatâs so sweet.â
Cas tries to smile, but it just comes off as a sort of grimace.
âYes. ItâŠ.is.â
Dean is silent. Cas gives him a sharp kick under the table.
âFuâum, uhâyeah. After threeââ
âAnd a half,â Cas interjects, giving the woman a sort of long-suffering but doe-eyed look.
Dean plays along.
âThree and a half years,â he says, his shin still smarting. Goddammit, heâs a cop, not an actor.
Suddenly heâs wishing he signed up to do that dumb play with Sammy back in middle school.
âSooooooo.â
The lady props her chin up on her hands, batting her eyelashes at them.
âHowâd you meet?â
Dean blanks.
âGym,â he says, the exact same time Cas says âFarmerâs market.â
Cas shoots him a look of panic.
âFarmerâs market at the gym,â Dean blurts quickly.
âOh wow,â the woman says. âIâve never heard of something like that.â
âYeah, itâs great,â Cas starts rambling. âAll the proceeds go to benefit people in need, you know. Who are hungry.â
âOh! I volunteer with a soup kitchen downtown!â The woman says, smiling wide. âWhat organization is it?â
Cas gapes like a fish for a second.
âHappy hands areâŠ.hungry hands?â He says, his voice turning up at the end. Dean winces.
But the woman seems oblivious.
âWow,â she says again. âIâm Jenna, by the way.â
She holds out her hand, and Dean automatically takes it.
âCongratulations again,â he says stiffly. âExcuse us.â
He claims his dateâs attention, and Dean keeps the smile on his face until heâs sure theyâre distracted. Then he whips back to Cas.
âRobert Plant and Steve?â He hisses under his breath. Christ, how did this man ever become a detective??
âAt least itâs a normal name,â Cas shoots back. âLed Zeppelin? Really?â
Dean blinks.
âYou know who Robert Plant is?â He asks, surprised. Cas huffs out a breath.
âOf course I do,â he says. âWhat, do you think I live under a rock?â
âWell, yeah, kinda,â Dean says shrugging.
âReady to order?â
The waiter has appeared again. Dean purses his lips.
âYeah. What are the specials again?â
âRobert,â Cas says, stressing every word. âI have to use the restroom.â
He pushes back from the table, nodding curtly.
âExcuse me.â
Dean waits for a beat, then stands too.
âIâŠ.also have to use the bathroom. Not because weâre gonna do anyâI mean, I also just have to pee. A lot of water. Wait, noâChampagne. Yâknow, Iâm just gonnaââ
He whips off after Cas before he can put any more of his foot in his mouth.
Dean finds him in the shadowy hallway that leads toward the bathroom.
âWhat the hell do we do?â Cas whispers.
âYou think I know?â Dean shoots back. âWeâre in the best place, I mean, he canât really go anywhere without us knowing, if we stick right next to himââ
âDean,â Cas whispers. Dean cuts off, and turns to look at what Cas is staring at.
Brady, perched at the entrance to the kitchen, holding a black briefcase and eyeing them suspiciously.
âHereââ
Deanâs only conscious of Cas grabbing the lapels of his shirt before heâs kissing him.
Dean freezes up, initially shocked at the cool press of Castielâs lips against his. But after a moment instinct kicks in, and he brings one hand to press against Casâs back, leaning into him. CasâŠ.smells really good. Like clean soap and a hint of aftershave, andâ
Abruptly, Cas pulls back.
âHeâs gone,â he murmurs. Dean blinks.
âOh,â he says hoarsely. âUh. Right.â
Castiel clears his throat.
âDean.â
Deanâs arms are still wrapped around Castielâs waist. He quickly releases him, stepping back.
âHe went in the kitchen,â Cas says. Heâs avoiding Deanâs eyes, but his cheeks are flushed, and he looks more disheveled than Deanâs ever seen him. Dean licks his lips.
âWe should follow him.â
Cas leads, and Dean pulls his gun, quickly flashing his badge as they rush after Brady through the kitchen. He radios to Benny and Jo in the car, speaking quickly.
âWeâre on Bradyâs tail. Heâs about to make the drop.â
âCopy that.â
They tail him to a small little park behind the restaurant, where Brady looks around, before kneeling and dropping the briefcase under a small bush. Dean steps forward.
âLetâs go.â
âWaitââ
Cas throws out a hand.
âIf we wait to see who picks it up, we get his buyer too.â
Dean bites his lip. Cas is right.
He radios Benny again.
âPick up Brady. Heâll be back in the restaurant. We got a confirmed visual.â
âGot it.â
Barely twenty minutes later, theyâve got a confirmed collar from Jo, and Dean spots the buyerâa suspicious looking character whoâs been loitering, moving closer to the bush.
âI think this is our guy,â Dean whispers. Cas nods, tightening the grip on his gun.
The buyer looks around, and looks dead at Dean, their eyes locking. Dean curses.
He grabs Cas, spinning him around and pinning him against the tree theyâve been hiding behind. This time, thereâs no hesitation, and Cas seems to melt into the kiss, arms winding around Deanâs neck.
The buyer snorts, and reaches for the briefcase.
They break apart, pulling their weapons.
âFREEZE!â Cas yells. âNYPD! WE ARE POLICE COLLEAGUES.â
âTHIS IS A WORK EVENT,â Dean says loudly.
x
Both men are handcuffed and on their way back to the precinct, and in less than an hour theyâre in Millsâ office, being congratulated on closing the case.
âNice work, gentlemen.â She folds her hands. âHowâd you get the buyer without being seen?â
Dean glances at Cas. Cas coughs.
âWeâŠ.distracted him,â He says eventually.
Mills narrows her eyes.
âWell.â
She stands.
âIâll expect your full report by tomorrow. Great work, Novak. Winchester.â
They leave Millsâ office, and Dean dawdles for a moment.
âHey, uhâCas?â
Cas turns.
âYes, Dean?â
âCan, I uhâtalk to you for a second?â
The evidence lockup is empty, like it always is, and Dean crosses his arms, staring at a spot on the floor.
âSo, uh.â
He shifts his weight from one foot to the other.
âWe kissed.â
Cas is quiet, and Dean chances a glance up. His face is unreadable, and Deanâs heart drops.
âBut we can be professional about it,â he says quickly. âIt happened in the line of duty, and it doesnât matter. Weâll justââ
Cas closes the space between them in three swift steps, and for the third time that evening, Dean is kissing Castiel.
They break apart a moment or an eternity later. Cas places a hand on Deanâs cheek.
âI donât think I want to be professional anymore,â he whispers.

Castiel squints at his mailbox, key poised in his hand.
Heâs not sure why he still bothers. He rarely gets any mail, aside from the occasional bill or spam offer, but he doesnât want that crap piling up, and besides, it gives him something to do.
And of course, thereâs the problem of one D. Winchester.
Castiel opens up the tiny mailbox, pulling out a small stack of papers. A catalogue for Pottery Barn, something from Verizon, a credit card offer. All addressed to a D. Winchester.
Who definitely does not live in Castielâs apartment.
Castiel dumps all of them in the recycling before heading upstairs, scowling.
Itâs been happening for little over a month now.
When the first letter arrived, Castiel assumed it was a mistake. He put it on the communal pile in his apartmentâs lobby and thought nothing of it.
But they kept coming. Nearly every day, and nearly all of it junk. Castiel googled it, of course, after wondering what the hell to doâand the internet gave him plenty of advice. He could just chuck it, he could open it (technically a federal felony, but who would be able to check?), or write return to sender.
So thatâs what Castiel did. Wrote return to sender and stuck everything back in his mailbox.
The first few envelopes disappeared, but the wrong mail doesnât stop showing up.
He starts to resent this âD. WinchesterââCastiel doesnât know if they made a mistake, if they actually live in his building and just put the wrong apartment numberâor if this is something else entirely. But heâs starting to get pissed at the seemingly endless stream of coupons and catalogues and envelopes. He steals a labelmaker from work and prints his name out in all caps, sticking it on his box so it canât possibly be missed.
Unsurprisingly, calling the post office doesnât help.
Castiel gets put on hold, heâs transferred several timesâand when heâs finally speaking to an actual human being, they question everything he says, doubt that he knows what heâs talking about in every syllable.
âAre you sure you didnât register this address?â The voice says, dripping with condescension.
âYES,â Castiel yells, frustrated. âThere is no D. Winchester living here, there has never been a D. Winchester living here, and there will never be a D. Winchester living here!â
He slams the phone down, and it gives him a brief sense of satisfaction.
But Castiel still keeps getting the mail.
An ad for food delivery service, and online baked goods store, a Victoriaâs Secret coupon for âVIP membersâ. A wedding invitation.
Itâs the first piece of personal, actual mail, and Castiel finds his annoyance is slowly turning into guilt. The invitation lists the sender as âSam and Eileenâ and an address upstate.
That one he immediately sends back. It disappears, and Castiel can only cross his fingers and hope it didnât disappear into the clusterfuck that is the U.S. Postal System.
Then he gets a jury summons.
Oh shit.
This is no longer catalogues and random coupons getting delivered to the wrong address. This is now someone who could get arrested for their mail landing in the wrong box.
The mysterious D. Winchester could get in real trouble for this.
Castiel fingers with the edges of the letter. Itâs all official looking, with JURY SUMMONS emblazoned on it in red letters. He chews at the corner of his lip, thinking.
âNo, I did not get it. Yes, I checked.â
Castiel looks over. One of his neighbors, the stupidly hot one thatâs heâs seen a couple times, also checking his mail, arguing with someone over the phone wedged underneath his ear.
âIâm looking right now. Nada. You trying to cut me out of the wedding, Sammy?â
Castiel freezes.
Sammy. Sam. Wedding invitation. This has to be him.
âUm, excuse me?â
The man turns and looks at Castiel, squinting. He points to the phone in his hand, clearly indicating heâs in the middle of a call.
âIâm sorry to interruptââ Castiel clears his throat. âBut is that Sam of âSam and Eileenâ?â
The guyâs eyes widen.
âCall you back, Sammy,â he says, quickly closing his mailbox and pocketing his phone.
âOkay,â he says slowly. âStalker.â He crosses his arms. âYou wanna tell me how you know that?â
Castiel shakes his head, explaining quickly.
âNo, noâmy name is Castiel, 4B. IâŠ.think Iâve been getting your mail.â
Castiel holds out the envelope. The guy takes it, scowling a little when he sees what it is. Castiel winces slightly.
âSorry to be the bearer of bad news.â
The man looks up, lips turning up in a half-smile.
âSo youâre the guy whoâs been stealing my mail,â he says. Castiel huffs.
âI havenât been stealing it,â he says defensively. âYou mustâve listed the wrong address.â
âHey, screw you,â the guy says good-naturedly. âI just moved here and all this apartment stuff is confusing.â
He looks back at his mailbox, then back at Castiel.
âWhat have you beenâŠ.doing with it?â
Castiel grimaces.
âTo be honest? Mostly tossing it.â He purses his lips. âYou get a lot of crap.â
âSam,â the guy mutters darkly.
Seeing Castielâs confused expression, he laughs.Â
âAforementioned groom. My brother. Signs me up for random shit as a prank.â
Castiel snorts.
âIncluding the Victoriaâs Secret Catalogue?â
The man goes pink.
âUm. Yeah,â he says quickly. âThat one wasâum, yes. Definitely a prank.â
Castiel raises an eyebrow. Interesting.
âWell, uh.â
The guy smiles, waving the envelope.
âIâm in 3B. You get any more of my stuff, just pop on over. I work the night shift, so I might not answerâbut you can always leave stuff outside my door.â
Castiel nods, his heart leaping at having an excuse to talk to the man again.
âIâm Dean, by the way,â he says, holding out a hand.
Castiel takes it. His hand is warm, surprisingly soft.
âDean,â Castiel repeats, smiling. âNice to finally meet you.â
x
A few days later, he gets another envelope for Dean.Â
It sits on Castielâs coffee table for another week until heâs brave enough to do something about it. He takes a deep breath, walks down the flight of stairs to the door marked â3Bâ. Castiel knocks, but thereâs no answer.
Well. Castiel will just have to try later. Heâs not going to just....leave the envelope out, where anyone could take it. People might really want to get their hands on aâŠ.
Castiel flips it over. American Express exclusive offer.
Castiel groans, thunking his head against the doorframe.
x
He works up his courage that evening, once again knocking on Deanâs door.
This time thereâs a brief pause, a scuffle and an echo of footsteps, and then the door opens. Dean smiles, whole face brightening when he sees who it is.
âHey,â he says. âCa-stielâŠ.right?â
âYep. Or Cas. Eitherâs fine,â Castiel says, holding out the envelope. âWound up with one of yours again.â
âThanks.â
âNo problem.â
They both fall silent, staring at each other awkwardly. Castiel clears his throat. Say something, anything.
âSee you around,â he blurts, and turns to go back upstairs cursing himself. Why can he never talk to attractive people, whyâ
âHey, Cas?â
Castiel whips back around. Dean is looking up at him, and seems to be chewing his lip.
âYou know, I was thinking about how you basically recycled my mail for the last monthââ
âAgain, mostly junkââ
âAnd I figured the way youâd make it up to me is going out for a drink.â
Castiel blinks at him.
âWhat?â He stammers out. Dean shrugs.Â
âCaused me a lot of headaches, Cas,â he says, but heâs smiling. âYou owe me.â
Castiel looks at him for a moment longer, deciding to just be blunt.
âAre you asking me out?â
âYeah,â Dean says, with an easy grin. âAre you saying yes?â
âYes,â Castiel says immediately. Deanâs face lights up, and he tosses the envelope somewhere back over his shoulder.Â
âAwesome.â
Castiel holds up a finger. âOn one condition.â
Dean pauses. âOh?â
âYou have to cancel all those subscriptions,â Castiel says, folding his arms. âCatalogues really arenât good for the environment.â
Dean laughs, and it lights up Castielâs soul.
âDeal.â
He claps Castiel on the shoulder, heading downstairs.
âYouâre buying!â
x
Dean does end up getting picked for jury duty, but Castiel keeps him company on his lunch breaks every day he has to be at court.
Castiel is Deanâs plus one to the wedding whose invitation they never saw again.
And eventually, Castiel needs to steal the label maker again.
He hands it to Dean, who places it carefully, then takes Castielâs hand before they head back upstairs.
Here is the first of many short stories that are Christmas/winter themed, following Castiel as he makes his way through his first christmas as a human! The pieces are all stand alones, but when read in order they will show relationship development from a crush to established. Each will be accompanied by a piece of art by an amazing artist who you should all follow (deadlyballlpointpens)!! Enjoy (:
                                       --
The first snowball hits Dean square in the jaw. The second on his right shoulder. The third he dodges, smiling the whole time. Castiel hides behind the impala, trying to catch his breath. Sam warned him not to take on Dean in a snowball fight, but Sam never thought of this: if you hid behind the impala, Dean wouldnât dare throw anything towards you. Itâs working so far.
âCastiel Novak, you get your ass out from behind there.â Castiel giggles at the way Dean yells at him. He loves when they can be like this. Carefree. Happy. Â
âWho? Me?â Castiel rolls another snowball, then stands up quickly. He throws the ball as hard as he can, but it just hits the wall of snow Dean built for himself as a shield. Dean squats down, pulling his phone out of his pocket. He shoots a quick text to Sam, laughing to himself.
âYour turn. Just donât hit my baby.â
In less than a minute he hears Castiel start to squeal. Dean peaks out to watch as Castiel jumps from behind the impala in a panic. He starts running away, looking over his shoulder at Sam. His laughter carries across the yard, giving Dean chills down his spine as he squats to make another snowball. Something crashes into him right when he stands up, sending him stumbling backwards.
Dean catches them both, his arms wrapping tightly around Castiel. The blue-eyed man stares up at him, breathing hard.
âYou give up yet?â Dean asks breathlessly, trying not to focus on how cute he is with flushed cheeks. Castiel nods sadly, putting out a pouty lip. Just as Dean starts celebrating his victory, Castiel takes the snowball stashed in his coat pocket and slams it into his face. The snow explodes, flakes scattering in the air. Dean stands frozen for a moment, his eyes close. Then his lips split into a shit-eating grin.
âOh, youâre in for it now.â Castiel tries to run but Dean catches him around the waist, spinning him in the air. Castiel feels the breath get knocked out of him when heâs dropped to the ground, snow getting pushed up the back of his jacket. He doesnât care. Not with Dean Winchester on top of him. âGot you.â Dean whispers breathlessly. Castiel nods. There are no truer words.
3.5k words || I saw this post and couldnât resist: âcollege-student + sugar daddy AU in the makingâ
College, Charlie Bradbury had decided, was just as boring as it was interesting, and it was that conflict that made it interesting in the first place.
It was only her second month into attending college, but Charlie was, truthfully, bored already. The classes were a snoozefest, because she already knew most of the stuff the teachers were trying to cram into their heads, and the homework was equally boring. So far, computer science hadnât lived up to the advertisements the college had posted on their website. Maybe she would drop out, if it didnât get any more interesting or challenging than this. She could very well make it out on her own, even without formal education.
But then again, she had made new friends who were fun, and at the very least, Dean was right there to suffer college with her. Deanâs attitude towards college was more diligent, even if his work ethic was barely above hers (not a very good sign for a future teacher, Charlie had once snickered to Dean, and Dean had protested that he only had to keep the children in line). And besides, her best friend provided her endless entertainment with his tales. Dean had a tendency to get mixed up in weird situations â a trait that they both shared, Charlie had to concede. It was, after all, what had made them best friends back in third grade: when you egg an awful teacherâs porch (a teacher that just happened to live three blocks from Charlieâs house) and run away together, you tend to bond for life.
Definitely one of the most boring parts of attending college was that they only got to hang out between classes, and maybe during the evenings, because their schedules conflicted so much. This was made worse by the fact that they couldnât share a dorm room, because this school was stuck in the 18th century and couldnât comprehend a female-male ârelationship that was platonic. Despite Dean and Charlie both having protested that they were only friends and wanted to share an apartment because of that, the school hadnât budged, and had put them both in dorm rooms with a stranger. Charlie had been lucky, because her roommate was at least very, very cute and funny, but Dean had barely said a word about his roommate. Charlie had deduced that it had to be bad, if Dean wasnât talking about it.
Today, they had been walking on the campus between classes, simply wasting time. Charlie wasnât sure what the time was, but even if she was late from her Math class, she couldnât have cared less. Dean was more entertaining than that.
Dean seemed to share this view, because heâd plopped down on the grass (right next to the âdonât step on the grassâ sign) and didnât seem like he wanted to move for the next century or so.
âSo,â Charlie asked, picking at the grass, âhowâs the roommate situation?â
âEnh.â Dean shrugged. âHe hasnât murdered me in my sleep yet, so thatâs a plus.â
âWay to give him credit.â
Dean threw a piece of grass at her. âAlfieâs okay. Heâs⊠justâŠâ
âWhat?â
âToo nice.â
Charlie stared at him for a moment. âHeâs too nice,â she repeated, carefully.
âYeah.â
Charlie shook her head. âIâm not sure I follow.â
Dean harrumphed. âHe made cookies last night. And asked me if I wanted to study together. And if I needed help with my homework.â
âAnd⊠thatâs a problem?â
âBasically, yeah.â
Charlie burst into laughter. âDean, thatâs the opposite of a problem!â
âIt is a problem! Heâs too nice to be⊠nice!â Dean argued. âHe even introduced me to his brother yesterday! And made tea for all of us!â
âWow, youâve got problems.â
âI really do. That was one of the most awkward experiences of my young life. Do you know how awful it was to sit in that shoebox of an apartment and drink chamomile tea with Alfie and his hot-shot lawyer brother?â
âWow,â Charlie said. âDean, youâre complaining because your roommateâs too nice and has manners?â Charlie laughed again. âYouâve really got to start giving people a chance, Winchester. Some people are just nice because they are nice. With no ulterior motives.â
âI can feel him judging me,â Dean grumbled. âHis brotherâs a lawyer. He can probably read my mind and see all the stupid stuff I did when I was a teenager.â
Charlie smiled. Having basically grown up with Dean, she knew where his insecurities lied, and with the unstable home life Dean had had, it was probably a miracle heâd turned as well as he had. The fact that Deanâs father had walked out on him and Sam and abandoned them to uncle Bobby had been a blessing in disguise, but it had also made Dean act out and made it extremely hard for him to trust anyone.
âDean, if you recall, we did those stupid things as teenagers together, and we learned our lesson.â She looked at Dean. âI hope.â
âTrust me, Iâm never going to steal another pack of smokes ever again.â Dean huffed. âNot worth it. Besides, it gives you lung cancer.â
âExactly.â
âSo whatâs your roommateâs like?â
âWho, Gilda?â Charlie winked. âVery nice.â
âGross.â
âI didnât tell you any details!â
âAnd believe me, any other time Iâd be dying for details about some girl-on-girl lovinâ, but youâre basically my sister, so thatâs gross.â
Charlie slapped Dean on the shoulder, and Dean nudged her playfully. She was extremely lucky that Dean was as accepting as he was, even if he chose to show it in weird ways. âWeâre going to be late for class. And your super-nice roommate is going to be terribly disappointed if you miss Chem two times in a row.â
âEnh.â
Charlie laughed to herself for a while about Deanâs âproblem,â but then forgot all about it. It seemed that despite all of his hang-ups, Dean slowly started to trust Alfie, because sometimes he mentioned Alfie when they talked. Charlie gathered from Deanâs talk that he and Alfie werenât necessary friends, but got along pretty well, and that was good enough.
Three weeks after that discussion, Charlie noticed that Dean had stumbled when saying Alfieâs name during a story. She raised her brows, prompting Dean to stop. They were once again laying on the grass in front of the main building, enjoying the autumn breeze and trying to forget the fact that they both had heaps of homework they hadnât even started.
âTrouble in paradise?â Charlie asked. âWas Alfieâs super-niceness just a ruse, after all?â
âNot really,â Dean said. âOrâŠâ
âWhat is it?â
âItâs uh,â Dean scratched his neck. âHis brother is⊠wellâŠâ
âAlfieâs brother? The lawyer one?â
âYeah. His nameâs Castiel Novak.â
Charlie blinked. âWeird name.â
âTell me about it. Oh! You havenât heard the best part.â Dean grinned. âAlfieâs real name is Samandriel.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âNope.â
âIâm taking back anything Iâve ever said about âCelesteâ being an awful name. Thatâs an awful name.â
âAw, donât be like that, Celeste.â
âYou call me that one more time and I will email the whole campus the story of you, Rhonda Hurley and a pair ofââ
âAlright, alright!â
âSo,â Charlie said, âwhat did this Castiel Novak do, then?â
âWell, heâŠâ Dean looked awkward. âHe keeps helping me with stuff.â
âHuh?â
âI mean, he pays for Alfieâs dorming, but then he insisted that he could cover part of mine, especially, after he heard that⊠And well, I havenât gotten that many shifts at the bookshop lately, andâŠâ
Dean trailed off, but Charlie caught the meaning nonetheless. It wasnât like Dean had much money to begin with, and Charlie knew that Dean felt guilty about âusing uncle Bobbyâs money to waste a few years in college,â as heâd worded it. Charlie had witnessed some of the arguments between Dean and uncle Bobby, and she knew that Bobby definitely didnât feel that way â he only wanted Dean to get an education and was happy to pay for college, as much as he could, but Dean couldnât get that into his self-sacrificing head for some reason. All Dean could see was the fact that he was using the money that shouldâve belonged to uncle Bobby and the Singer Garage, and so, Dean felt guilty about it. Heâd found a job at a local bookshop before college had even started, but even with that, he could barely make ends meet.
Charlie smiled. âSo heâs nice to a poor student and offered to cover most of the rent. Thatâs called being a decent human being, Dean.â
âYeah, I know, but, likeâŠâ Dean scratched his neck awkwardly. âYou know he buys Alfieâs books and all, right? Basically pays for whatever Alfie does. Because heâs aââ
âBecause heâs a goddamn lawyer, yes, youâve said that many times.â
âWell, Mr. Novak came by last week, and after he saw my chemistry books, he offered to buy me new ones.â
Charlie blinked. âWell, thatâs just reasonable. I donât understand how you can even pass the class with your edition, itâs five years old.â
âSame information, new package. The publishers just want more money, itâs not like anything revolutionary has happened since. Anyway, I couldnât accept that.â
âHm,â Charlie said, and Dean huffed at her little smile.
âWipe that smirk off your face and tell me, what do I do?â
âWell, has he propositioned you?â
Dean sat up suddenly, mouth falling open. âWhat? Of course not!â
âBut you still think he might be hitting on you.â
âEr, I meanââ Dean huffed. âWhatever. What do you call a roommateâs older brother whoâs just being nice and wants to help you out, probably because he views you as a charity case?â
âA sugar daddy.â
Dean gagged, making Charlie laugh. âCharlie, thatâs gross!â
âBut accurate!â
âNot even remotely! Heâs⊠heâs just being nice!â
âJust donât come crying to me when he drops his pants and tells you to kneel.â
âGross, Bradbury!â
Charlie just laughed, and when she was unable to stop, Dean tried to wrestle her for it. It turned into an all-out giggling and tickling war, and in a moment, neither even remembered what theyâd been laughing about.
The next week, Charlie ran into Dean in the hallway when she was rushing to her class. She hadnât seen Dean in a few days, because sheâd been busy juggling classes, homework, other social life and Gilda (lovely, wonderful Gilda), so she immediately stopped to say at least hi. Dean hugged her, and when Deanâs shoulder bag dug into Charlieâs stomach, she realized that Dean hadnât owned that previously.
âIs that a new bag?â Charlie asked when they parted. The black shoulder bag Dean was carrying looked new, and was definitely an improvement to that awful, green back bag Dean had had since elementary school. At least the shoulder bag wasnât falling apart.
âEr,â Dean said, âMr. Novak bought me this.â
Charlie blinked. âHe bought you a bag?â
âItâs used! He said he found it in a Salvation Army shop.â
âRight. The hot-shot lawyer who earns three times more than your education costs a year bought you a used bag.â
âItâs⊠nice?â
âAnd he just gave it to you?â
âIt was a gift!â Dean huffed. âBesides, I made him pie for that. You know, because it was polite.â
âYou baked him a pie?â Charlie asked, flabbergasted. Dean loved pie in all of its variations, but he only baked it to those he viewed as his closest friends and family.
âIt was the polite thing to do!â Dean huffed. âWhat else would I have served him with tea?â
âYou had tea with him.â
âAlfie was there, too,â Dean weakly added.
âOkay,â Charlie said, smiling. She realized that this as clearly a delicate moment, and she shouldnât prod anymore. Dean would figure it out soon himself. âThat was nice of him, really.â
âYeah,â Dean said. âIt was.â He coughed. âI shouldâI mean, Iâm almost late forââ
âOh!â Charlie smiled. âIâm almost late, too. See you later!â
Dean left, a slight blush on his face, and Charlie resolved to wait for a few days before prodding again.
She didnât have to wait for long. Two days after that, she and Dean had lunch together, and Dean surprised Charlie by asking, âWhat do you think I should wear to an Italian restaurant?â
âTo a what now?â Charlie asked. âYou have a date!â she realized then.
âItâs not a date!â Dean protested. âCastiel is just taking me and Alfie to eat after midterms. Alfie showed him a picture of the cafeteria food and he nearly gagged. Then he said that thisââ Dean punctured his poor excuse of spaghetti with his fork, ââis not even close to Italian food, and we ought to learn the difference.â
âWell, heâs correct. This is more like something the cook made, ate and then vomited to the plates.â
âEugh. But true,â Dean said.
âHeâs not⊠creepy, is he?â Charlie asked.
âWhat? No. Actually, Castielâs really nice. And interesting. Heâs kind of dorky, and weird, for a lawyer, you know, but heâsâŠâ
âI see,â Charlie said, when Dean couldnât come up with any description. She noticed that Dean had shifted from âMr. Novakâ to âCastiel,â but didnât want to draw attention to it. âHow old is he?â
âThereâs a big age gap between him and Alfie. I think heâs thirty?â
âItâs not that big of a gap,â Charlie said, teasingly.
âShut up,â Dean grumbled. âHeâs not grooming me, or anything of the sort.â
âI never said that.â She grinned. âIs he good-looking?â
âWhat?â Dean paled. âHow should I know? Iâm not gay!â
âAnd Iâm not attracted to men, and I can still tell when I see a handsome guy. So, câmon, indulge me.â
Dean twirled his fork in the spaghetti, around and around, and Charlie stared at him and waited.
âI guess he is,â Dean finally grumbled. âHeâs⊠he doesnât look anything like Alfie, really. Heâs my height, and heâs got these big, blue eyes, like ice. Dark hair, and a permanent stubble.â
âWhy does that sound familiar? Like something out of a, oh, fairytale?â Charlie pretended to think. âTall, dark andââ
âTall, Dark and Brooding, more like,â Dean interrupted, and Charlie laughed.
âIf you say so,â she said.
It took two more weeks before Dean mentioned Castiel again. Charlie hadnât asked him about the not-date at the Italian restaurant with Alfie as a chaperone, but since Dean hadnât mentioned it, she figured that it mustâve been a pretty important event. She simply bided her time, because Dean would crack sooner or later and tell her everything.
She wasnât wrong. They were walking through the campus, enjoying the autumn air that was slowly turning towards winter, when Dean cracked at last.
âSo,â Dean started, âI think Alfieâs brother might be hitting on me.â
Charlie very nearly tripped on her own feet, but managed to catch herself at the last second. She bit back a grin and asked, âReally? Mr. Tall, Dark and Brooding is hitting on you?â
âI regret ever telling you that nickname.â
âThe mystery is why you even have a nickname for him,â Charlie reminded him. Dean glared at her, and she huffed. âAlright, alright. Mr. Novak is hitting on you.â
âMight be,â Dean corrected her.
âFine, might be hitting on you. How do you figure?â
âWell, heâŠâ Dean scratched his neck. âWe went to that Italian restaurant a few weeks ago, right?â
âYeah.â
âWell, it was really nice and⊠stuff⊠and I figured I should repay him somehow. So me and Alfie invited him to our place for dinner.â
âThat was nice of you. And itâs not that weird to get to know your roommateâs brother.â
âUh.â Dean looked away. âActually, Alfie couldnât be there. He cancelled at the last minute.â
âI see,â Charlie said, barely able to contain her laughter.
âHe bought wine,â Dean said. âAnd dessert, even though Iâd baked apple pie.â
âYou made him pie again?â
âWell, he liked the last one, so I just thoughtâanyway. It was nice, heâs nice, it was kinda fun to spend the evening with him. We even watched a few episodes of Orange Is The New Black on my laptop, âcause he said he hadnât caught up to the newest season yet.â
Charlie had to pretend to cover a cough to stifle her laughter. The image of Dean and Mr. Novak sitting on his poor excuse of a bed at the dorm room was simply too much for her. âOkay. And?â
âWell, nothing. That was it. Although, today, I got a text from him, andââ
âYou text?â
âAlfie gave him my number as an emergency contact,â Dean protested. âAnd he says itâs relaxing to text between all those meetings he has.â
âOh my god,â Charlie laughed, not able to hold her laughter inside anymore. âAnd he still insists on buying stuff for you?â
âCharlie, itâs not like that, I meanââ Dean paused. âI donât even know what itâs like. Heâs not creepy or anything, heâs just⊠really nice. Too nice.â
âLike Alfie,â Charlie slyly said.
âNothing like Alfie. Heâs⊠Cas is different.â
âOh, so now heâs Cas, is he?â Charlie grinned.
âAre you even listening to what Iâm saying?â Dean asked, annoyed. âAnyway, I got a text from him today, and, uhâŠâ Charlie blinked when she saw that there was a slight blush on Deanâs cheeks. Kudos to whoever this Castiel Novak was, if he could make Dean blush more than once a century.
âHe asked if I was interested in going to a concert with him. Heâs got an extra ticket. I donât even know the band, but I listened to them for a bit on YouTube, and it sounds like my kind of thing, andâŠâ Dean looked elsewhere. âThatâs not weird, is it? Asking me to a concert? Do you think I should go?â
âWhy shouldnât you?â Charlie asked. âHeâs nice, like youâve said. And handsome, apparently.â
âI guess,â Dean hedged. âHis eyes are really, really blue, though, you need to see it yourself. Itâs ethereal.â
âOkay,â Charlie smiled. âSo why wouldnât you go?â
âItâs⊠not weird, is it?â
âLet me recap. Your sugar daddy finally wants to collect, and you chicken out?â Charlie asked.
âFor the last time, Charlie, heâs notâmyâŠâ Dean paled. âOh god, heâs totally my sugar daddy. Without the sex, of course.â
Charlie cracked up again, laughing at the face Dean made. âOh my god, this is the best thing ever. Youâve caught yourself a sugar daddy, and didnât even realize it!â
âHeâs notâI meanâIâm not gay!â
Charlieâs laughter finally subsided, and she calmed down enough to say, âI never said you were.â
âBut Iâm not!â
âDean, youâve spent the last five minutes describing to me how wonderful Castiel Novak is and how his eyes are so blue that you want to go swim in them.â
âI never⊠said⊠thatâŠâ
âWell, you meant it.â
âBut Iâm not gay!â Dean protested again, and this just made Charlie roll her eyes.
âBut you like him.â
âOf course I like him!â Dean yelled. Then he stopped walking. âFuck. I like him.â
âYes, and?â
âNot like that!â Dean said, although it was a feeble attempt. âI justâfuck you, this conversation is over!â
Dean stormed off, and Charlie shook her head after Dean. She almost wished she could be there when Dean finally put the pieces together and talked things through with Castiel, but then again, she definitely didnât want to be there to see the gross, sweaty man-sex theyâd probably have. Urgh.
Three days after that, Dean knocked on Charlieâs dorm room door early in the morning. Charlie sluggishly separated herself from Gildaâs sleeping form and opened the door in nothing but a t-shirt and panties, but she didnât even have the decency to blush, because Dean had seen her in far worse states. Dean took one look at Gildaâs naked back, and gave a thumbs-up to Charlie. She winked.
âCome in,â she said. âThough, you might wanna be quiet. We had kind of a late night.â
âUh. Good for you,â Dean said. He stepped in, and then fell silent for a while. âSo, uh.â Dean rarely blushed, but now seemed to be one of the few times for that. âThanks for⊠what you said.â
âNo problem,â Charlie said. She smiled. âSo, you went to the concert?â
âYeah,â Dean said. A small, gentle smile spread on his lips, and it wasnât hard to imagine what had happened. âAnd um. We had pizza after the concert, and, um, talked. Among other things,â he added.
âCongrats,â Charlie grinned.
âAlso, uh. I think you should meet Cas.â
âYou mean, I finally get to meet your sugar daddy?â Charlie asked.
âHeâs notââ
âMr. Tall, Dark and Brooding?â
âBetter, butââ
âYour boyfriend?â
Dean smiled, relaxing. âYeah, I want you to meet my boyfriend Cas.â
Charlie smiled. âIâd love nothing more.â
âJust, uh, promise me you wonât call him a âsugar daddyâ. He⊠really doesnât like that. Trust me, I tried. Itâs bad enough with the nickname he gave me.â
âReally?â Charlie grinned. âAnd what cute little nickname does he call you?â
Dean rolled his eyes. ââSugar.ââ
Charlieâs laughter woke up Gilda and earned her a yelling from Dean, but she still felt like it was worth it. College with Dean, she decided, was definitely an experience worth all the boring parts in between.
