Prevent Hermit Crabs from Spawning

I don’t think I've heard much about prevention as much as de-spawning so I thought I’d provide a tip for those who love bug hunting on the island in Animal Crossing New Leaf. The hermit crabs I find spawn a lot and because they disguise themselves as other shells, and as long as they CAN disguise themselves, they will.

Several months ago I decided to experiment by filling the entire coastline with shells (not the type that the hermit crabs use as a disguise) so that there was no space for them to spawn.  You’re probably wondering “how did you do that? You can’t take shells from your town to the island.” I know, that’s exactly it. You need to use the shells from the island. Granted this will take several visits to fully set up, given that you have done all the other things to help with beetles spawning (common knowledge, these are not my own observations)

Your saplings, pines and bushes are chopped down

Your flowers have been uprooted

A lot of unwanted bugs will spawn if these things haven’t been done, which makes beetles much less likely to spawn.

Once those things have been done, you want to pick up all the seashells you see and drop them on the grass. Don’t miss a single shell. Every time you return to the island, more will spawn on the coastline but the ones you left on the grass will still be there. What you want to do is repeat this process until you've pretty much covered the grass in seashells. After that, pick them all up and line the coastline with them. Make sure to take into account diagonals and place two rows of shells if you can.
