Visual diary #4 | designed.org
Becoming a designer can be difficult.
There are many different avenues and approaches that make taking the first step overwhelming. Designed.org is a non-profit that helps prospective talent by pairing them with a designer.
This example illustrates how you can help people by providing a service. Designed.org is free to join and is built around getting others excited and motivated to learn more about the different aspects of the design field. For the mentors, designed.org functions as a way to give back to the community that allowed us to become designers in the first place.
Many of the prospective talent currently have jobs that don’t fully satisfy them. Many have voiced frustration about not being able to tap into their creativity in their current job. The helping aspect of this example is not as prolific as saving the elderly or helping children in need, but does empower some to level-up their skills and chase after a career that makes them happier.
I joined designed.org as a mentor in 2018 after looking for ways to both mentor others and find a mentor of my own. Since then, I’ve joined the core designed.org team and am working with others to make the platform more scalable and accessible to prospective talent all over the world! I have heard incredible stories of designers using this service to get access to tools and feedback that have changed their careers. It is a simple idea but is amplified by the excitement and openness that is shared, all in the pursuit of bettering oneself.
