002: Smart Habits
The first design exercise was a smashing success. So much so, that weāre going to enter all (students and alumni) submissions in a drawing for Bloc swag at the end of this month. šĀ Below is the second exercise to increase your lots in the drawing, but before we get to that, check out the sweet submissions I received this past week.
The āWhoās on First?ā Award
Ingrid Elias, Design Track
Ingrid was the first to submit, with a concept for an email bill. This design shows that thereās many facets to calculating utility bills. Breaking the visualization down by fees and individual charges reminded me of all the hidden costs in a utility bill.Ā
The āMega Mansionsā Award
Eric Sartorius, Frontend Alumni
Eric wins the award for highest electricity bill. š Like Ingridās design above, Eric considered the fine print, with directions for the user on how to find help and documentation about their bill (which is a very important usability heuristic!).
The āEnergy Saverā Award
Jonathan Bello, UX/UI Alumni
Jonathan presented a mobile app design and did a great job on information hierarchy here. The linear flow is very easy to parse and allows users to understand the relationships between the numbers.
The āInternet of Things Awardā Award
Alex Ferguson, Design Track
Alex took an interesting approach to breaking down the bill by usage in individual rooms. This opens up for an interesting discussion on how the user experience might be like to set up this system, on both on the hardware and software side.
The āUsers-Firstā Award
Jean Juliano, Design Track
Jean wins theĀ āUsers-Firstā Award for showing her thought process and decision making in the design. User stories and user flows shows consideration for the end-to-end user experience from log in to onboarding to final transaction. Props to that! Check out Jeanās design in hi-res.
Great work everyone! Hereās your next prompt.
Design Exercise 002: Smart Habits
Design a smartwatch user experience to help people form better habits.
Thatās it! Happy designing.
No rules, no time limit (recommended: 3 hours max), no format restrictions, except what is described in the brief or constraints. Prompts are just a starterāāāadd your own twist. š Design experience not a prerequisite to participate. Back-of-the-napkin sketches accepted. Mentors, staff, alumni, and students are all welcome!
