a very unprofessional essay (should i say unprofashional?)
*i'll be only focusing on the women bc i know even less about historical menswear
the first lady we meet is helen stoner from "the speckled band"! her hair is put up in a classic 1880s hairstyle. the sillhouette of her dress (wide shoulders and chest + tiny waist, it's not really visible on the picture bc of the light), the high collar (decorated with fur on her outdoors costume and with frills on her indoors dress) and the shape of her hat point to the same decade.
she's always dressed in black - she's mourning (with her black mourning veil, a detail taken from the book) ; but the white shawl she's wearing at home helps her not to blend in with the dark background, as well as accenting her light hair and the white frilly collar.
her style might be the most period-accurate in soviet holmes: in the later episodes women are dressed for later decades, despite their canonical stories being also set in 1880s (we'll talk about it below)
starting from the hound of the baskervilles, the fashion choices are getting... curiouser... setting HOUN post reichenbach but pre-sign of four is quite an artistic liberty in itself
beryl stapleton's first outfit... could be 1890s but either very early or very late - the big shoulders+tiny waist silhouette is still here but without ridiculously huge sleeves popular in the mid 90s. her hat seems too large though so i guess late 1890s-early 1900s
her hairstyle... the first one, also mid-late 90s ig. it's not an 1880s uptight hairbun, it's larger, curlier and more loose.. the second i'd say its 90s-00s
many of her outfits use black lace. the red one is especially gorgeous - black+red, lacy sleeves and collar, huge floral ornaments... THAT's a femme fatale <3
their shape feels more 1900s though. the flowy top & skirt, the shape of the sleeves on the blue dress, the ribbon-like thingy on the waist?
the combo of black lacy showy collar and sleeves is also something i see more in 1900s...
laura lyons is my personal fav. her costume and the interiors of her room have a lot of asian influences (china & japan) - it's the art nouveau era and orientalism is trendy again especially in artistic circles.
her outfit seems like a mix of a chinese silk robe with a western informal dress.( i tried to find something resembling her outfit but it's not accurate and i still can't find out what it's really called, so feel free to correct)
this marks laura as different from others - she was a wife of an artist and has her artistic tastes as well; she's surrounded with mystery ...
the story also treats her like a fallen woman, she goes against victorian morals (even if it's not by her own will) - so maybe by associating her with art nouveau, giving her a pipe and surrounding her with "exotic" luxury items, she's marked as a decadent
her hair feels very 1900s. girl <3 gibson girl even
it might be a western imitation of a geisha hairstyle...?
see you in part 2 where i'll be talking about "the treasures of agra" and "the xx century approaches"!!

Design stuff for ag67, may change in the future idk design rambles underneath the cut
Chris and Andrew having opposite clothing colors. Simple chain necklaces
Red, anger, the wells- but so is blue, calmer, still related to water, the blue roses
Andrew looks similar to his Minecraft avatar, but his colors are darker and cooler. His features are less round, compared to how I draw his avatar. Some moles on his face. He's somewhere in his twenties but college and the whole.... everything is making him look older than he actually is. Maybe 20+ hours of sleep and vacations and solving everything may help him look young again. I forgot his eyebags, sorry
probably dresses in whatever is comfier for college and collapsing onto the bed. Go my bedrot king/lh
Chris!! I'm not so sure, but I based him off my childhood friends. He died his hair but stopped taking care of it after... You know. Glasses, moles, some acne. Design most probable to change I'll have to brainstorm more (I need to check the ag67 timeline again. But we know he didn't get to grow up and be tormented by college) (this is a jab to myself college tortured me this semester)
if I was his parents I'd sue the hell out of the mental asylum. Kid repeatedly tells you he's feeling like shit and you give him meds that have been reported to make feel people worse. We truly need a healthcare system reform and this is not even about the series, we just really need one
Drawing Chris's Minecraft version is fun. Took some inspo from other people, and like I said before what matters is that he's soggy and barely a silhouette with a creeper head
I need to draw Everette more. I swear he's my favorite, my little bro, I just haven't got the ideas to draw him AUGH. The moment we found out about his real name I was like "MONUMENT MYTHOS BRAINCELLS". Cmon Everette do the right thing. You can also be made of good people.
For a reason only known to myself I wanted to info-dump my design choice for our feral steeb.
This is a simplified pic and I'm not fully good with explaining, but bare with me;
I mean, it's all pretty obvious; and although I plan on amplifying these key traits in the near future.
On the physical side of things, I basically just took the OG future steeb and mashed in traits from Rose Quartz and his corrupted form.
I know Greg also had long hair, but it didn't have the curls like Rose does. And if I could draw hair ringlets correctly, they'd be more visible in his wild mane. And along with that comes his size; even when he was a kid, we was pretty big; just an inch or two bigger than OG classic Steven. That's because Fluffy would regrettably raid any nearby camps or civilizations for the best nutrients she could find, and once he was old enough to eat solid foods, she would hunt game animals which were high in protein.
That, and since his gem was still modifying his body to make him more adaptable to his wild environment and make him more Quartz like; he increased in size much quicker and his durability. By the time he was 16, he already towered over his father, reaching half of Rose's height. And yeah, I said eyes; I'm not good at mimicking her eye-shape yet (it'll be more obvious on older Lil Quartz, but it shows in other ways, as you've seen.
And in terms of the "corrupt form" since he grew up with those traits, it's all been significantly watered down, with most of his spikes being retractable and small, only coming out if he feels defensive or is brawling. And in terms of tusks, I know they're supposed to be at the sides of his face, but it ended up looking a bit awkward on a small human face. So those are only out when he's in full kaiju form.
As for his paws, they are still big and clumsy, but he can still operate phones and tablets easily enough without breaking them. And I know in the OG design, he had no "paw pads" on his hands of feet, but those came developed over time from being in an environment that requires walking on rougher grounds and running and scaling walls and trees.
And on the behavioral/mental side, he retains personality traits from when he was a kid, even when he's older. Despite his run in with the CGs, he's learned to be optimistic, and is excited at learning new things. (Though he's wary when it comes to Rose Quartz) And he's still very humorous, making light of certain situations, but in this realm, his humor is a bit dark at times. but he's also a bit more ambitious in this rendition, especially when it comes to proving himself and tying up any lose ends his "carrier" may have left intentionally.
He's also still quite helpful to others, though he's learned to be cautious from his Aunt Centi and to approach things carefully. But he won't dive in blindly to help either; hopefully in future posts, I'll be able to show his strategic side.
And of course, he's still got the Feral mentality of a corrupt gem, with animalistic qualities that don't really go away; from running and walking on all fours to hunting and digging for food like his mama and Aunt Tri-T taught him, something Pearl tries desperately to curve.
He's also not the one to be easy to control or follow orders; especially not by Gem Poofers Rude Crystal Gems. He's also fidgety in small spaces; growing up in such an open space, he has a hard time listening if he's somewhere he feels uncomfortable/stifled.
And if provoked, he can get a bit aggressive, but this was more prominent when he was younger. Insults and jabs towards him upset him easier when he was younger since he was still coming into himself, but when he's older, it's jabs towards his friends and family that upset him. He also hates anyone disturbing the peace in general.
And like most feral gems, he isn't too pacifistic; he will go down swinging if he needs to. Peace is always an option for him, but it all depends on whether or not the person deserves it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that's the end of my rambles for know, hope that made some semblance of sense.
reblogged a post w this already but i wanted to specify that Karb Astral Guard has this type of build! i think he just looks more friendly (and more accurate for his type) with this
ghghhhh trying to find a sturdy aesthetic for my Pink Parrots designs should not be this difficult BUT OH BOY IS IT
(I just don't know HOW cottagecore I want to go outfit wise lmao)
we're back with the treasures of agra! this episode is a combination of 2 canonical stories, the sign of four and a scandal in bohemia, so we have two gorgeous and very different women ...
irene adler's look is undoubtedly 1900s, the narrow, loose and flowy silhouette of her dress, her large hat, and of course the hairstyle.
she's also wearing a choker - in 1900s this accessory reached peak popularity in britain thanks to queen alexandra.
(in xix century however... chokers were associated with ballerinas but also with prostituted women ... which kinda aligns with how irene was viewed as an adventuress being an opera singer... )
(and from my experience in russia, here chokers were considered indecent for a long time - so maybe the soviet audience did get the 'scandalous' association as well?)
blue accents on her hat and dress make her red hair stand out even more (yay complementary colours!)
mary morstan's first outfit follows the description from the book. it's practical but neat, with a bare minimum of decorations (she's poor after all). it kinda looks a decade or two outdated - i see jackets like this much more often in 1880-90s - with only the hairstyle hinting at 1900s. is mary wearing hand-me-down clothes?
while irene's look is built on contrasts and dark colours, creating the image of elegance and maturity - mary's look emphasises cuteness and youth, especially her pastel pink frilly dress (the collar lowkey looks like angel's wings <3) the colors don't contrast but rather match her features (blue to match her eyes or pastels to go with her light skin and hair)
in the soviet series both mary and irene(!) are meant to be love interests. i'd say they are two types of ideal women, two kinds of love... irene as the independent, experienced, regal-like figure - she's surrounded by mystery, she's exciting but she'll never be yours, she'll be forever out of reach (i can't really call irene a femme fatale) and mary as the down to earth, domestic, innocent kind... girl next door but also an angel sent to earth
the last episodes of the series, titled 'the xx century approaches', were made during the era of big political changes in the ussr. and big changes were happening in the series itself too!
experiments with style, tying completely unrelated stories into an overarching plot, much more violence on screen, overt political and anti-war themes (a brave choice which was impossible during the time when the early episodes were filmed, AND went against the message of acd's original story - i'd love to talk about it one day)
even the interior designs indicate a beginning of a new era - abstract paintings on the wall clashing with the classical interiors..
hello again mary. honestly they massacred my girl so much i couldn't even recognize her at first glance. the dress is fine though, classic 1910s sillhouette we have here, with the loose puffy blouse and a very narrow skirt. simple and practical, fitting for a working woman like her.
lady hilda trelawney hope's costumes indicate luxury, without looking over-the-top obscenely luxurious.
definitely influenced by paul poiret and the "scheherazade" orientalist look popular at the time. see the turban-shaped hat with a feather in the middle and the balooning mantle. and don't ask her how many birds died for that hat...
the vibrant emerald colour <3
this one... looks more like an evening dress... the position of the waist indicates early 1910s.
now that she's taken her mantle off we see she's wearing a lot of jewellery... all the glittering diamonds really make it impossible for the viewer to take their eyes off her., and chokers are in fashion again!
this ended up a lot more emotional than i intended, but hope you still enjoyed it! and once again feel free to correct my inaccuracies or add your own opinions or observations!!
i keep on trying to unfold what's going on here. long text post. behold.
disclaimer: i'll be referencing CARI's researches a lot when talking about western aesthetics and using pictures from their collections as examples. sources: [1] [2]
you can read these posts for more context [* * ]. all new info under the readmore. enjoy
first things first. i contacted an admin of a vk blog dedicated to soviet design with 100k subscribers. from what they told me, there is no terminology for late soviet design aesthetics. almost no specific identified styles*. most designs of this era are simply classified by date.
* well there are some but they're either underground (conceptualism, soc-art) or revivals of old styles (neo-constructivism)
my explanations why this happened:
1) all known styles from early 20 century were created on purpose, there was always some ideology or theory behind them. rayonism, futurism, constructivism, suprematism - they all had some kind of a manifesto. socrealism was officially created for ideological propaganda
i can imagine mid- and late-century aesthetic was not created on purpose but as a result of a natural evolution of socrealism.
2) the artists working in these styles were less widely known. maybe a lot of them remained anonymous or just never rose to popularity (which is not uncommon in ussr). everyone knows rodchenko or stepanova or deineka but there are no big names to ask "why are your posters Like That"
but HOW did socrealism evolve into modern corporate graphics adjacent?
i have my own theory.
this style is known as supergraphic ultramodern, popular in 1960-70s. its elements are flat graphics, rainbows, concentric circles, stripes and other simple geometric shapes, rounded or sans-serif fonts...
and the olympic games used it in its branding:
the 1980 olympic games were held in the ussr. of course it brought international cultural exchange. but also let's take a look at its visuals... do they remind you of something?
i think that's really it. an important worldwide event like the olympics really could popularize an uncommon style in ussr. unless i encounter this style EARLIER than 1980 which means it has different origins...
****
i'm going to ask my local librarians or art college teachers if they have any more info on this era. but i doubt so because it really seems not explored enough. but maybe the research is not over so stay tuned ig
Have you seen the ogkatsu brand Dolly Devil? I think they were going for that vibe
of course... i understand what vibe they were going for
but the ogkatsu dolly devil designs were done much better (and this isn't nostalgia talking because i really think mieru, meh and parin's designs are wonderful)
ogkatsu's designs used fur and knitwear on outfits that are otherwise light/revealing/not warm (idk how to explain 🙏) yet it didn't look as weird as taimu's design
maybe it's from the unnatural shapes the fabric is put in? taimu's top looks like it's a knitted sweater (if we look on the texture) but the sleeves that get more puffy towards the end and then end up in frills??? i can't believe you can make such frills out of knitted wool
im talking about this
maybe its from the lack of balance? the top is made from very heavy knitted fabric but there's nothing as heavy to match (well the fabric of the shoes looks heavy too, but not enough)
these ribbons with pompoms hanging from the back also bug me. they are like two animal tails which just looks silly (not in a good way) and overall clashes with the sexy/mature image they were going for
also there's not enough eyecatching patterns or textures or little details, which the other designs are full of...
sorry if this sounded harsh or uncalled for ):
btw i just checked her other pictures, and she looks much cuter on this one? its just a recolour, but it has a nice coherent colour palette, which has both vibrant neon colors for accents and black and white to balance them and make the outfit not look like a complete mess. everything is matched (and also looks good with her hair)
