@Regrann from @frank_n_kitten - Yesterday Shep went under anaesthetic for a spinal xray, and while under, we took the opportunity to neuter him. Unfortunately the older a dog is, the more intricate the surgery. Shep has had some post surgery complications with bleeding, and is going back into surgery today. He will hopefully be back home staring at me inches from my face tomorrow morning. This is Marvel's pound photo. She's one of the 10 kittens I picked up from the airport 10 days ago. She's only 5 months old. And she's 5 weeks pregnant. As @drkatlovell says "If your vet says not to desex until 6 months old, find another vet" Kittens CAN and WILL get pregnant. I went on a little rant the other day and decided it was worth sharing here - 1. Rescues don't make money. They run at a loss and we have to fundraise our arses off to pay the vet bills. 2. Cats do not leave our care until vet work is complete. Ever. This is non-negotiable. 3. We do not sell cats to the highest bidder. It is not a first come first serve business. Our cats will only be approved for adoption if we believe you are the best home for them. 4. If you don't like the way your local rescue runs things - over 250,000 cats and dogs are killed in Australian pounds every year. Go and help some of them. 5. It is not in the best interest of the cat to give them away or to adopt them out for a small amount. This increases the chances of them being hurt or discarded. 6. We do not have a shelter. The cats are kept in loving foster homes until a suitable home is found. No matter how long it takes. 7. Our volunteers are just that. VOLUNTEERS! They work full time jobs, have families to look after, study commitments, and a life outside rescue, yet they are there every day putting up with bullshit and abuse because they believe in the cause. 8. Comments that start with "I wish I could but..." are not helping. Adopting is helping. Fostering is helping. Donating food and litter is helping. Sponsoring a last litter mum is helping. Volunteering at one of our fundraising events is helping. Contacting your local MP about TNR and desexing programs is helping. Educating friends and family about the importance of desexing and microchips is helping. Running transport is helping. Giving us a long list of excuses so you don't feel bad is not helping. 9. Desexing and microchipping is important. It saves lives. Do it. 10. Do not tell us we don't care about animals. We take them in when you discard them. We nurse them back to health when you've neglected them. We heal them when you've abused them. We hold them tight and cry when we can't save them.
