Ep 91 – Ice Cold in Alex – Desert Survival, Camaraderie, and an Ice‑Cold Beer
A WWII film where the final boss is dehydration, sunstroke, and an ambulance held together by a thread.
Ice Cold in Alex is about a small group of people attempting to cross the North African desert in a battered ambulance, while the war rages somewhere nearby and the heat does most of the fighting. Germans, mines, thirst, sand everywhere, and one deeply suspicious South African hitchhiker all stand between them and Alexandria.
We talk about:
The desert as a genuinely terrifying antagonist
wartime camaraderie forged under unbearable conditions
and the most spiritually satisfying beer in cinema history
Sometimes survival is about courage and sacrifice. Sometimes it’s about not murdering your travelling companions before you reach the bar.

Those armored cars were huge! Second from the right, you know who. Sometime in 1918, somewhere near Wadi Rum. Obviously one car broke down and needed rescuing. I recently began reading more into the military details about the Desert War, and after Aqaba T. E. Lawrence did not only get his own troop of armored cars but also the X-flight for air reconnaissance and actual bombing and transport. After what I read, this was the starting point of the combined forces in mechanized warfare. So far for the romanticized view on a war fought on the backs of camels and horses. If this is the famous "Blue Mist" Lawrence rode into Damascus I don't know...
