Saw that Twitter post about how Dermott serves as Hank’s role model during Brock’s leave, and I’ve never thought about it that way before, but they’re literally right. Dermott was a crucial part of Hank’s development. Dermott is the first actual human friend Hank has ever had, and allegedly the first other teenage boy that Dean had ever seen/met. Dermott is also cocky as shit, and his endless stream of mendacity allows us to watch Hank, initially shamelessly ditzy and socially unaware, slowly but surely grow into someone who uses critical thinking skills and questions the logic behind what he’s told. Additionally, Dermott’s rebellious attitude really helped Hank come out of his shell to start sticking up for himself instead of taking it when Rusty started favoring Dean while still treating Hank like shit. Not to mention Dermott’s impact on Hank’s music taste, his sense of style, humor, etc. The genius of Venture Bros. is truly endless because I don’t think any other show director(s) or writer(s) could figure out what to do with newly introduced characters at all like Doc and Jackson can.
whatever bro

shallow gravy playlist
hello all, @puppetnauts and I are working on a playlist full of shallow gravy-esque songs. we're running out of ideas and now we're coming to y'all for some requests 🤔 you can view the playlist here (link) to see what songs we already have on there if you're curious
this includes songs they would probably make, songs they might like, songs they wish they were good enough of a band to make, songs that describe them/their lore, etc. ... basically any song related to shallow gravy in any way is accepted. drop them in my/his inbox. serious inquiries only or I'll kill everyone in this room
the bloodhound gang are probably the most accurate real life equivalent of shallow gravy
Share some Hank headcanons if you please
I have a lot, this list may have to be edited over time in case I forget any, and most are projections. these aren’t all simultaneous but they could be if that’s how you get down:
hank is a butch lesbian (I used to headcanon him as bisexual, but since I’m projecting onto him he’s a lesbian now. bite me)
hank is autistic. duh
furthermore, dc comics/batman are absolutely his special interest
a lot of people headcanon that he goes into OSI, but with all the shit he went through later in the show I personally think hank ends up joining the guild with every right in the world. I do have an AU I’ve been working on where he joins the OSI though
problematic — hank has and/or had feelings for brock. having never known what a real adult figure is growing up due to rusty’s negligence, I feel like his attachment to brock (and the protection and guidance he gives to the boys, compared to rusty’s lack thereof) transcends a simple “father/son” dynamic. this is an extremely nuanced topic and I do not feel like cramming it into this tumblr post at this time (I’m too high to do that)
problematic — hank definitely has/had feelings for dermott. again, his first ever true friend that he hangs out with often? I like to think hank recognizes dermott’s flaws but also appreciates the good side that offered him friendship and mutual interest/passions and that’s what makes him so fond of dermott
while dean has his nerdy stuff, I think hank’s smarts are for non-conventional passions. he’s much more artistic and emotional than he is scientific and mathematical, indulging in literature and music in order to express all that teenage angst and childhood trauma through poems and paintings. I think this is pretty fair considering brock and dean point out his natural but strange ability to recite quotes lol
when brock isn’t the one doing it, hank cuts his hair himself. that’s why he has a buzzcut a lot of the time; it’s an easy style to do on your own and it doesn’t require maintenance whatsoever like longer hair does
once again projecting, but I think hank has BPD. we see him fall in love or become intrigued by people extremely quick throughout the show, and with brock leaving his abandonment issues and anxieties regarding being left behind were on clear display. it’s not out of the question to say hank might have BPD after constantly being abandoned or rejected (mostly by his own father) as a child
while dean looks emo, hank is for sure in the emo scene. dermott introduced him to various alternative genres and now hank is inspired by heartbroken emo boys singing their hearts out, because that’s basically who he is. if rusty actually allowed the boys outside, hank would be spending most of his money on concerts and CDs
despite popular belief, hank likes cats more than dogs. their calm and assertive nature inspires him to be braver every day. I think he’d also appreciate how low maintenance cats really are, not because he’s lazy and wouldn’t do it if he had to but simply because he appreciates not having the extra stress on his routine
hank thinks dean is too radically positive, and it should be ok to acknowledge that sometimes things have gone to shit and you’re upset about it. hanging around brock, paired with hank’s tendency to act out of anger and disappointment, overtime hank builds a lot of productive and useful ways to navigate emotionally driven situations properly, making him a pretty comforting and helpful person to talk to (contrary to popular belief)
