read read read. read contemporary authors and read the classics. read novels and short stories. find poetry that speaks to you. read essays and interviews from your favorite writers. engage critically with everything you read. why do you enjoy a certain book or a certain author? what is it about their use of language that stays with you, that makes you feel the way you do? when you’re ready to write, let yourself write. you can go back later to expand where you need to, clarify your language, edit as needed. as with all artistic endeavors, try not to judge yourself while you're in the act of creating. you'll have your chance to be critical when you go back to start the revision process. i also think it’s helpful to give the words some breathing space once they’re on the page, especially if i’m exploring an idea that i’m feeling particularly emotionally invested in. i find that i’m able to untangle most complications and/or at least come back with a different way of engaging with the narrative if i let myself take a step back and practice some music, read a book, etc.
at the end of the day, what’s the story you’re trying to tell?

Thank you so much for your posts about anti intellectualism and books in general, they are really eye opening and now I am far more aware of the way in which I consume media, something for which I'm really grateful about. I quite honesty didn't like your opinions on certain things when I first came across your blog, but something made me look at them with an open mind. That really changed my views and opinions, and I thank you for that again. Have a lovely day/night etc etc.
Hey bud so so sorry this is late LOL. But! I've written my first Bumizumi work, and I hope you enjoy :')
......
Bumizumi - #1 - “Believe me, I will never be tired of you”
He woke up in the middle of the night due to quiet snores from their grandson that slept between them. It had been years since Bumi and Izumi had a little one share their bed, but he relished the moment.
There were days when he still couldn’t quite believe how his life turned out, how happy he was because of her.
Bumi sat up on his elbow and glanced down at the six-year-old. Jun’s little belly stuck out after riding up to his chest, and Bumi had to resist the urge to tickle it while he was asleep. He watched as the boy’s chest rose and fell with each breath, how his nose resembled Iroh’s, how his hair stuck up in the air even when he was laying down, and how while he dreamed, his arms stretched above his head while tiny fists were balled up and tense, as if he were ready to jump out of his sleep and fight.
He chuckled at the sight, and ran a gentle finger across the boy’s cheek.
Then he looked across the bed at his wife. His beautiful, amazing wife. Because was he really so lucky to have won her heart? Apparently so, and to this day, he still couldn’t quite believe it.
Bumi was never the one they called accomplished. He wasn’t the gifted bender like his siblings, or the most decorated man in the army. He was just Bumi, the funny one, the one that was ordinary, the one that never quite made a name for himself. And even in his old age, he still found himself believing he was never quite enough.
This feeling, however, never surfaced when he spent time with Izumi. She never treated him differently, and when he was with her, Bumi never tried to be anyone other than himself. Izumi laughed at his jokes, listened to his ideas, and gave him her undivided attention whenever they were together.
Not only was he the most comfortable around her, but Izumi was simply put, the most amazing woman he had the privilege of knowing. And he knew a great deal of extraordinary women. Izumi, however, was the very best in his eyes.
Naturally, the man fell in love with her.
And the life that he had with her, the life they built together, was one for the storybooks.
He was pulled from his thoughts when Jun snored once again, and this time, Izumi woke up. Bumi must’ve still been smiling, because Izumi gave him a curious look as he sat up on the bed, propped up by his elbow.
“What is it?” she whispered.
His grin widened as he stared at his adorable wife in her half-asleep state. “Oh, nothing,” he whispered back. “Just thinking about how great our life is.”
The comment made Izumi laugh. “Little early in the morning to be thinking about that, Bumi.”
“Seriously, though!” he exclaimed as much as one could while there was a sleeping child next to him. “We’ve got an amazing life here, two great kids, and grandkids! Never in my wildest dreams—” He let out a quiet sigh, then reached over the bed to grab Izumi’s hand. “With you and me together, life is nothing short of amazing.”
When Izumi lowered her head, Bumi knew that she was smiling; she always dipped her head low when she tried to hide her smile. So he moved her hand to her chin, tilting her head back up so he could see her fully. “Well, now you get to spend the rest of your life with old, wrinkly me. So don’t get too excited, I’m sure you’ll get tired of me.” She always had a self-deprecating remark, but Bumi always had something to say back.
“Believe me, I will never be tired of you. Not in the middle of the night, not when we’re older and wrinklier, not even when we’re both senile.”
Izumi’s eyes met his, and his heart fluttered as it always did with her. And when she grabbed his hand and kissed his palm, he fell in love with her all over again.
They went back to bed after that, holding hands across their grandson, and Bumi fell asleep with a smile on his face, dreaming of the simple pleasures in life, dreaming of his future with his wife.
9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community.
@lone-star-ranger. He's kinda migrating to the Star Wars fandom lately, but all of his ATLA stuff is incredibly well done, with some very unique stories. (His Star Wars stuff is really incredible, too, although I haven't read as much of it.)
@myargalargan. Her Sukka blog is pretty well known, but it seems like her writing isn't quite on the same level, and it is fantastic. One of the best Sukka writers out there, and up there, in my opinion, among the ATLA fandom's writers.
@twinkle-toph. Couldn't go without mentioning at least one of the Kantoph crew. I don't know about her Tokka stuff, but her Kantoph stuff is incredible, and deserves all the recognition in the world.
(To be clear, this is just three of them. I could name another...probably thirty or so, you included.)
13. Do you outline your fics? How much of a headache would someone get if they just looked at an outline of yours without reading the fic?
Oneshots, not at all. Multichapter stuff, I'll...do some outlining, but not very much, usually. I'm starting to do more and more just so I can actually keep track of things and, you know, tell a half-decent story. The outlines I do have are...probably rather headache inducing, not gonna lie.
33. What do you like writing better: one shots or multi-chapter stuff?
Oneshots. Much easier to do. Admittedly more instant gratification, which...yeah, isn't always good, but still. They're just easier for me to actually get done, realistically. I say that like I'm not stuck on...well, all of the oneshots I'm working on, at the moment. Meh. Minor details.
