PRATT FINE ARTS CENTER
by Derek Wu
A Miami-born African American activist in the Civil Rights Movement, Edwin T. Pratt became the Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League in 1961 and was a champion for equal access to education and housing until his assassination in 1969. For more than four decades the Pratt Fine Arts Center has continued Pratt's legacy by making art accessible to anyone, of any age, background, or skill level. In 2010 Seattle muralist and designer Derek Wu, with Sara Ferguson and John Horton assisting, led a team of six young student assistants creating this work at Jackson St and 20th Ave. Wu says the "dream-like state" portrayed is at least in part inspired by M.C. Escher, but clearly there are many influences reflected including Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. @prattfinearts/
