3
Alright, so the 3 in the title refers to season 3 of Doctor Who. Not the old Doctor Who, but the new Doctor Who, as in from the 9th regeneration onwards. As most of us know, season 3 is the season where Martha Jones became the 10th Doctorâs companion. For reasons that are unfathomable to me, Martha Jones gets a ridiculous amount of hate. If you donât like her, great, thatâs fine, everyone has their own opinion and preferences, but thereâs absolutely no reason to go after her character and call her âa whiny bitchâ to quote many people who have posted in various forums. The worst part is, the argument against Martha always, always comes down to the fact that âSheâs not Rose! Sheâs just a replacementâ.
Well, obviously, Marthaâs not Rose. They wonât be similar either because they come from completely different backgrounds, are different ages and have had a totally different upbringing. Therefore, Martha cannot replace Rose because they are completely different people, and Martha never even knew Rose. She wouldnât be able to fill her place even if she wanted to, which I doubt she would considering her strength of character.
Speaking of her strength of character, Martha was the only companion who was brave enough to know when to leave; she realized that staying with the Doctor would just kill her self esteem and that he would never notice her, so instead she chooses to remain with her distraught family and move forward with her life. Not to mention, throughout the series, Martha continually saves the Doctorâs life, often by putting herself in peril. Martha is so devoted to the Doctor that even during the episodes Human Nature and Family of Blood she remains with the Doctor, enduring racial slurs and watching the man she loves fall in love with someone else. Also, letâs not forget the little fact that she SAVED THE WHOLE DAMN UNIVERSE by walking across the Earth and spreading the word of the Doctor. Oh yeah, that definitely sounds like a âwhiny bitchâ to me.
Now, I understand that some people might not have liked her to even talk about being in love with the Doctor, but thatâs ridiculous. If anyone traveled to places they didnât know existed with a fantastic, attractive stranger who kissed them (rather passionately I might add) on their first meeting, chances are that you would fall in love with that stranger. Then to have that stranger you now love tear you down and always, always compare you to someone you never even knew, would upset you. Martha obviously needed to vent and would, every once in a while, talk about it. To her credit, she never whined and didnât talk about it half as much as people pretend she did. Besides, if one watches the season without a bias, they can see that every once in a while the Doctor will do something that gives Martha hope, only to take that away from her in a little bit.
Now, Iâm not saying that Martha and the Doctor should have ended up together (even though I personally think they should have),but no one can deny that Martha Jones was an excellent companion. Martha was smart, funny, good in a crisis and beautiful, but unfortunately she got emotionally abused by the Doctor, and since everyone knows the Doctor, they were on his âsideâ and disliked that someone other than Rose was in love with him. So basically, what Iâm saying is that I think the only reason Martha gets so much hate is because she came into the show at the wrong time. If Martha had joined the Doctor before Rose or after Donna, I feel as though the whole fandom would see her differently.
Iâm done now. I just had to rant for a bit because I truly cannot comprehend why Martha gets so much hate and is so overlooked. So I guess, everyone can tell that Martha Jones is my favorite New Who companion. I like all of the companions, but Martha just stands out for me⌠I guess sheâs first and everyone else (yes, even Rose. Just because I like Martha doesnât mean I hate Rose) is tied for second place.
To all the Martha haters:
