Best/Worst Albums of 2013
#10Â Demon Lung - The Hundredth Name
Metal likes to dabble in theater, which is fine. David Bowie is considered a fine artist, therefore metal bands that create good theater should be able to be considered fine artists. Demon Lung creates some good storytelling with The Hundredth Name. It’s doomy, gloomy, and downright Cathedral-y. It’s a bit of Labyrinth, if we’re continuing the Bowie train.Â
The story follows a child of Satan who is on earth to assemble the 3 parts of the devil’s bible, which seems like a number they could’ve really bestowed more meaning to (I’m not well versed in demonology so I could just be wrong). Unfortunately, that one song does not make an appearance on the album. Really, to make this album better, they should’ve just covered Labyrinth songs. No Jennifer Connelly either. Then it’d be #1 this year.Â
If the album fails anywhere, it’s the lack of discipherable songs. They’re all kinda’ the same and follow the same formulas. It’s like when you used to do calc homework and do 30 problems that are exactly the same. They’re good, don’t get me wrong, they’re just a little mad chill all the time.
If you like pulp and underworld hierarchies, then this album is for you. If you like links of Labyrinth songs, then you should just click all the links in this review.
