Pam looked beautiful.
Andrew always thought his wife looked beautiful. Her long, elegant red gown fit her perfectly despite her muttering about extra weight while she put it on. While she was getting ready she complained about her weight, the lines around her eyes, and the slight greys that ran through her hair. Andrew still saw her as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
Her eyes were bright as she looked around the stunning party, delicately holding her glass of wine. It was the first time she had ever been to a company party and he knew how overwhelming it was.
The company had been around for centuries, run by the same demons who started it. They were wealthier than Andrew could ever imagine and it clearly showed.
“Look at that,” Pam whispered, tugging on his suit sleeve. “It has to be an original!”
The painting really was amazing. It stood at least ten feet high and showed an intricate scene of two people, demons judging by their eyes, holding each other in a tender embrace.
Demons weren’t as terrifying as the media made them out to be. They were only considered soulless because they were cold. If he had lived for centuries he would have been hardened towards the world too.
Plus, there was the general knowledge that you had to sell your soul to become a demon. They had been servants for a millennia before the revolution. Now they were as free as any man but still held on to their inhuman qualities.
“That’s my boss,” Andrew nudged his wife and nodded towards the center of the party.
Kurt Hummel didn’t look a day over twenty five. He was dressed neatly in a perfectly fitted suit and his hair was swept up like always. The demon carried a aura of confidence that came from centuries of being in charge.
Just as they were walking up to greet him someone stepped out from behind Kurt and they both froze.
When they had last seen Blaine he was wearing a thick sweatshirt and his glasses, waving goodbye as he started the drive to Sam’s house. Clearly he was not spending the night with his friend. He was dressed in an incredibly beautiful suit and looked more grown up than they had ever seen him.
The soft smile on his face faded and was replaced by a look of horror as they approached.
“Mom, dad,” he squeaked out. “I thought…I thought you were just going to stay in tonight.”
“We changed our mind,” Andrew said as Kurt turned towards them.
“Mr. Anderson,” Kurt smiled widely but glanced between all of them. “What a pleasant surprise. This must be your lovely wife.”
He extended a hand and kissed Pam’s hand, smiling. There was another awkward silence as Blaine tried to avoid his parent’s intense gaze.
“We thought you were going to be spending time with your friend,” Pam finally spoke up.
“Yeah…no,” Blaine rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m here with…with Kurt.”
Andrew felt his chest go tight. He could still remember the time Kurt got angry enough at a customer that his eyes flashed black and his fist went through a solid oak table. No way his little boy was dating a centuries old demon.
“No,” he said quickly.
“Ah, you haven’t told them,” Kurt smiled crookedly.
“How long has this been going on?” Pam asked, eyes wide and panicked.
“Um…a few months,” Blaine’s cheeks burned red.
“He’s in high school!” Andrew hissed, for a moment forgetting that he was talking to his boss.
“I’m eighteen!” Blaine argued back. “It’s my decision.”
Pam pressed a hand to her forehead. “We should go home.”
“We’re in love,” Blaine said quickly and Kurt’s expression softened. “I know it’s hard to understand and I know it’s not…usual but it’s true. Kurt cares about me and I care about him.”
“Blaine, you don’t understand,” his father started and Blaine’s hand flew up.
“I am completely aware of who and what he is,” Blaine’s voice was sharp and harsh. “And I don’t care. He cares for me and he is good to me. My parents should be able to look past everything else and see that I’m happy.”
There was a long pause before Pam let out a long sigh.
“We’re just worried about you because we love you,” she said softly. “And the fact that you lied to us already about where you were going tonight. It’s…disconcerting.”
Kurt had been silent the entire time but finally spoke up. “I understand where you are coming from, I wanted him to tell you both from the beginning. However, I have been alive for many, many, many years. In those years I have never met someone who I have cared about, who I have loved, as much as Blaine.”
Their son’s eyes softened and a small smile spread across his face. Pam had never seen Blaine look like that and it made something tighten in her chest.
“I can see that,” she said softly and Andrew’s head snapped to her.
“What?!”
“Just know,” her voice dropped and Kurt’s smile faded. “That if you hurt my son I will hurt you ten times as bad. I don’t care if you are centuries years old or how powerful you are. I will do it.”
“Yes ma’am,” he said quickly. “I would never dream of hurting him.”
“That’s all I needed to know,” she nodded and finally felt her husband relax next to her. “So, I certainly hope that you have not let my baby boy partake in any alcohol.”
“Mom!”
“Of course not,” Kurt grinned widely. “We demons protect what’s ours."
