Spiff had been trying to get the lads back under his control from the beginning; he couldn't stand that they'd "stolen" his fusion technology and made it part of their everyday lives. Nevermind that they were trying to let their fusions exist as people instead of turning them into weapons like he'd intended. His latest scheme turns out to be the most successful, but it comes with disastrous unintended consequences for everyone involved, Spiff most of all.
