“Come on, Del, can you at least carry something off the pitch? It’s not that hard.” Today’s training was finished, and everyone was helping carrying the materials back to the storage. Everyone, except Dele. And it wasn’t the first time that happened. “What’s a girl like you gonna do about it, huh?” He instantly was in your face. “I’m not going to let anyone speak to me that way!” You stood your ground. “Fuck off.” Dele spit back, and stormed off to the dressing room.
At first you were too flabbergasted to react, but ultimately the disrespect of Dele’s words sank in. You felt hot tears burn in your eyes, but refused to let them fall out here on the field and for the whole team to see. “Are you okay?” Eric came up to you, “he was way out of line.” “I’m fine,” you answered curtly, before briskly storming back to your hotel room.
---------------
You remained in your hotel room for the rest of the afternoon, not wanting to see anyone. Most of the afternoon had been filled with silently crying at the blatant disrespect Dele had shown you.
Around dinnertime there was a soft knock on your door. Against your best efforts to ignore it, you decided to answer it. You were shocked to find Dele standing on your doorstep. “I really don’t want to talk to you,” you fumed. Your turned back into your room, but left the door open for him to follow. “Please, just listen to what I have to say,” he almost pleaded. “You get one minute,” you bit to him, “and if I’m not liking what you’re saying, I’m kicking you out. Emphasis on kicking.” “Fair enough.” He held up his hands in surrender. You sat down on he bed and folded your arms, giving him a look that could kill. “I’m terribly sorry for what happened this morning,” he started, sounding nervous, “I was out of line, way out of line.” “Go on,” you said sternly, not satisfied yet. “Truth is...” Dele hesitated, “I... like you... a lot.” “You sure have a strange way of showing it,” you retorted. “I’m serious,” Dele sounded sincere, “I didn’t know how to tell you, I still don’t, and... now I blew it.” Holy shit, Del,” you sighed, “you could’ve just said something!” “I should have,” he admitted quietly.
You blew out a deep breath, feeling you chagrin with Dele die down a little bit. “Will you give me a chance to make this right, please?” Dele pleaded, “all I’m asking is one evening. I’ll take you out to dinner, and if you still hate me after that... well, than it’s my own damn fault.” You looked up at him, for the first time looking deep into his brown eyes and seeing the beauty in them. There was a strange twinge in your stomach, and excitement you hadn’t been expecting. You nodded and smiled softly at him. “Alright, I’ll go out with you.”
