Degreeshow exhibition and performance 2015
The pictures above show the constellation of my work and my performance during my Degree Show at the Glasgow School of Art in June 2015.
In my performance I would move within my exhibition space and would sing by myself a series of old traditional turkish songs called türkü.
This concept is the output of a series of self-analysed text frames, poems, song-texts and letters I would write to myself in my sketchbook that became more like a diary for thoughts and ideas, feelings and plans rather then for drawings.
I write to keep track of my confusing environment and try to combine the foreign and new around me with the old and traditional, that I thought I was running away from. However, these writings transformed into performances, in which I sing old traditional Turkish songs, interacting and expressing myself more through the sound and gesture rather then a translation, pointing out the relationship between our inner world and our outer world and the struggle to connect between.
The songs are about the longing to find your place in the world, being on a constant journey to find it, and while your future is unforeseen, the things you left in the past start weighing even heavier then usual.
It is about being homesick, not only for your family but also for the peace of mind.
I chose these lyrics, because they are the mane songs I have in my life and because they represent not only my feelings as a student abroad but also reflect my journey in my life, school, art that is chained to a great deal of suffering. In this case I try to reflect the longing for the peace of mind to put it in contrast to my art work that is on one side dynamic and chaotic but on the other side also enables a state of meditative reflection.
