Who is Mellow Cuton?

Hi guys! I'm a French Beatmaker from Nantes

How began the collaboration with Dee WP and how came up the album "Win or Learn"?

Dee and I have a mutual friend (Homy Toast, the DJ who made the scratch on Win or Learn Intro), he made us meet summer when Dee was on holiday in Nantes, we laughed a lot together so we started to try to do a song, it worked well right away  so we insisted and make this project. :),

While listenin to yuor album we felt a lot of 90s Hip Hop influence in it. It was something you was looking for or is just your way to work on beats?

I don't know actually, I have a lot of very diferent influences, and my musical tastes are very different , I try to know everything , even if it is a long quest , I also learned to mix better every day my sounds for my beats sound like I would like, and above all I want to discover new sounds , new rhythms , there's nothing easier for a beatmaker than composing for 10 years the same beat, and if it's easy it's boring .

We read somewhere, maybe on your Bandcamp, that you work with an "old" MPC. What's the story behind that? And what's your current setup?

haha yeah I started with an old MPC 2000 that a member of my family had given me because it is increasingly used , as soon as I started to deal with I have not stopped, I found this genial machine I sold it not long ago , I needed more opportunity , more options because I do not just hip hop . My setup now :  An Imac , a turntable , a  MPC renaissance  , SP 404 and a Arturia Microbrute , and full of vinyls !

Where you stand in relation to sampling? I mean...Are you a "purist", only crate digging, or are you more "permissive"? Which means using files from youtube, spotify, itunes etc etc.

I try to have my sample on vinyl , if this is not the case I try to download it in good quality, I 'm not a purist at all, for example if you need very expensive machines to make your music and you criticizes those who do not have the means to have those machines and manage to succeed still make good music with their little financial means , you're anything but HIP HOP . The only thing that matters is that your music is good, if you highlights what you have, instead of promoting your music there is a problem .

What's going on in France? How's the HipHop scene down there today?

Pretty good! It starts to get quite MC who bring something different and that's good (watch my friends Eli MC and  Mez!), The beatmakers also begin to touch everything and it's cool, and then there are some people who are really great in the french beatmaking as AL'Tarba, Guts, 20syl, they each have their universe, but when you hear a song from one of those three you know who it is, and that's the sign of the great composers.

If you have to pick just one name, it could be a musician, a producer or maybe a Dj or an Mc, who'll you choose for explaining which are your musical roots?

It's difficult to pick just one! Madlib, because it's simply the best.
