#deer brain

The other day we found a young whitetail buck who had been fatally struck by a vehicle. I was able to take home his head and heart, and I moved his body into the woods for the scavengers. He had a very prominent but clean break towards the back of his skull. I was able to remove his brain without further cutting his skull, and now his eyes, heart, and brain are being preserved. His skull will also be cleaned. There’s really nothing quite like holding a real brain in your own hands. It’s very surreal.

We spend so much time attempting to separate our hearts from our heads. Wondering and worrying about which to follow, to listen to, to use . As if both are in a constant state of deleterious dissonance. The truth is, it is impossible to untangle the bundles of vessels and fibers which have become so impeccably intertwined. Beneath our skin, we are but a beautiful mess of beating thoughts and chemical emotions. Navigating love blindly but carefully, we find that maybe it isn't so black and white. Maybe it's what we see pumping bright red through a mix of grey matter and inhibition. Maybe these two organs are one in the same, simply conspiring ways to inflict and prevent pain.
