@gaywatch he is so pretty 😍
I found myself another CDrama bias: Chinese actor Cheng Yi. First saw him in "The Vendetta of An", which I'm currently watching and decided to check out his earlier drama "Mysterious Lotus Casebook" as well.
Found out as I was checking his body of work that he did a more modern drama called "Deep Lurk" (more modern in the sense that it's not set in ancient Chinese history) and that he had a scene where he disguised as a woman. Goodness. Cheng Yi makes for a gorgeous woman. But what's compelling about him in those few scenes that I saw is that he's playing a spy. It kind of reminded me of "M. Butterfly".
I think Cheng Yi would make a perfect M. Butterfly. He has the delicate, almost feminine features, that would make him pass for a female courtesan. Yet he can show a cold ruthlessness and strength that belies his seeming softness.
I hope he'll do more serious films portraying complex characters with ambiguous morality. Something along the lines of Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber and Severus Snape, or Tony Leung's Mr. Yee. It's so wonderful to see Cheng Yi's androgynously beautiful face transform into something dark and unfathomable. He showed it in "Deep Lurk" and in "The Vendetta of An".
I think both Mysterious Lotus Casebook (MLC) and Vendetta of An (VOA) are Cheng Yi's best acted roles to date and also smartly written stories with excellent supporting cast. The number of veteran actors in the latter one is one of the reasons I was interested in besides the revenge plot and unhinged Cheng Yi.
MLC is about letting go and moving on (sort of) while VOA is about an eye for an eye.
VOA is available on Netflix in case new viewers want to check out.
I loved Deep Lurk as well, it was an older show but all the characters were smart.
was casually scrolling through make up for ever’s weibo and… howdy, this video was posted exactly a year ago.
