Alex Manes Week 2021 Day 2: Tropes
Featuring: Popular Kid!Alex and Nerd!Michael

“Stop,” Michel hissed when Isobel continued to glare at him. “I’m not asking him to prom.”
The massive eye roll she gave him was not unexpected.
“C’mon, Michael. It’s not like you don’t know each other. We hang out all the time.”
“No. He hangs out with you,” he corrected. “I just happen to be there.”
“Potato-potatoh,” Isobel said with a dismissive wave of her fingers. “Doesn’t change the fact that you’ve been in love with him for almost as long as Max has been in love with Liz and our brother’s actually managed to score a date with her. Are you really going to ride off to UNM with Schrodinger’s teenage romance hanging over your head?”
Isobel was, as usual, annoyingly right. Graduation was just around the corner and then they were each setting out on their own adventures. The thought of not seeing Alex ever again made his entire ribcage ache with a stupid, melodramatic longing and because of that Michael paused. He paused for five seconds. Scratch that. He paused for three seconds and yet Isobel was grinning at him like she’d already been crowned prom queen.
“I knew you’d cowboy up,” Isobel said, “Now tell me how you’re going to do it because I can’t live down another dorky promposal like Max’s. My mean girl clout can only do so much.”
Michael resolutely ignored the actual cave of bats suddenly flapping around in his stomach as he let Isobel steer him down the hallway.
What’s the worst that could happen?
Reading up on transcripts from Jensen's panel and while I adore the whole he and Misha sharing reaction videos and Jensen having asked a crew member to take pics/record video of *his* reaction to the confession...that he told one fan that the scene with Dean and Cas was Misha's swan song gutted me and now I'm gearing up to NOT see Misha in the finale.
And in that case, poetic justice would be Sam and Dean solving their MOTW case, and agreeing to part on good terms. The camera pans to Dean standing alongside the impala, getting an unexpected call. He looks down, sees Cas's name flash on the screen and rushes to answer it. He gingerly holds the phone against his ear, hesitantly says Cas's name and hears, "Hello Dean" in a gruff voice. And then the screen fades to black.
That's how it should be if Misha is indeed not in the finale. That is giving proper closure to Dean and to his happiness arc.
We can get all the Sam and Dean tributes to earlier seasons and all the bro love they throw at us but in that final scene, we see Dean finally accept that he can be happy and that his happiness lies with Cas.

“This sucks.” Bella draped herself dramatically across the bed. It was day three of their solitary confinement and seeing as mother nature seemed to be taking vindictive glee in drowning the whole camp, they were even more isolated for the foreseeable future.
“Indeed,” was her roommate's distracted reply.
“Indeed,” Bella repeated, mimicking Willow's accent good-naturedly as opposed to the bitchy way she'd been acting the past couple of weeks. “Why are English people always so proper?”
“Technically I'm American," Willow said, finally looking up from the book she'd been reading to give Bella the attention she deserved. "My dad's American too. I was adopted though so I never met my mum.”
"Same, but I have a big family so not having a mom hasn't been too bad. I'll show them to you," Bella said as she wiggled to the other end of her bed to grab her journal. She was so bored she was actually excited to show Willow photos of her family like she was some lonely cat-loving grandma.
She bounced onto her stomach on Willow's bed and started handing her the polaroids.
"That's my Pop. He's an engineer, but he also owns a junkyard with my Pop Pop which is way cooler. This one is my Pop Pop. He's like my grandpa only we're not actually related and that's my Uncle Max and Aunt Isobel who are my dad's siblings but they aren't related either."
"So the only person you're related to in your family is your dad?"
"Except for the part where I'm adopted," Bella said in a way that was 100% her Pop. They may not be blood but she was definitely her father's daughter. She handed another photo to Willow. "This is him when he was a teenager. He was such a dork."
Willow gasped. “Bel, why do you have a picture of my father?”
“What do you mean? That’s my dad.”
“No, him,” Willow said, thrusting the photo at Bella and pointing to the other boy in it.
"Holy shit," Bella said looking back at her with wide eyes. "That’s Alex Manes.”
"Yes. Believe me, I’m aware.”
Bella scrambled to her feet to emphasize the importance of their discovery. “You don’t understand, I secretly took a polaroid of that photo because it's like one of Pop's most prized possessions. I've tried asking him about it and he said he was just an old friend even though he was obviously lying. Plus Auntie Iz once told me that Alex was my dad's first love."
“You're saying our fathers used to date?”
"Yes! Oh my god!" Bella said, flailing her arms around.
Willow stared at her, realization dawning on her face. "Wait, people have been saying we look exactly alike and since we're both adopted do you think—"
"Oh my god!" Bella flailed some more. She grabbed Willow's shoulders. "Our dad's used to date and we could be sisters. That’s not a coincidence. That’s fate.”
“There’s no such thing.”
Bella straightened, her hands on her hips. “What do you call this then?”
“A series of incredibly unusual events,” Willow said primly.
“I’m going to propose something that will make it even stranger then.”
“What?”
“Despite your blasphemous disbelief, fate has led us to this exact, precise moment and it would be an insult to take all her hard work for granted. We need to do right by her and set up our dads.”
“How? We literally live an ocean apart. My dad hasn’t been stateside in a decade. He says there’s nothing here for him. I doubt he’d fly thousands of kilometers just to meet your dad.”
“No, but he’d come to get you. I’ll go back to England in your place, and you go home to Roswell in mine.”
“That’s insane.”
“It’s not. We just give you a haircut — no offense, but your hairstyle needs an update anyway — then we just need to pretend we're each other long enough to worm our way through their defenses and convince them that we all have to meet up to make the switch."
“You do realize that we could just tell them that we’re probably related and we want to get to know each other and it would achieve the same thing?
“Yeah," Bella agreed, a mischievous grin on her face, "but where’s the fun in that?”

And there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was a great earthquake, such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty.
-
Roswell, New Mexico was once a tourist trap. A city of fifty thousand humans, a legend that few truly believed, and three harmless aliens that no one knew about.
Then there were three harmless aliens and one psychotic alien-murderer.
Then there were three harmless aliens, one psychotic alien-murderer, and a secret government facility full of alien-prisoners.
An explosion and a lightning bolt later, it was back to three harmless, homeless aliens.
For a quick second it seemed life would go back to being relatively normal.
But then Jesse Manes got a paramilitary operation involved.

“Guerin, I’m fine!”
“I just magicked you with powers I didn’t know I had! You’re getting an x-ray.”
“Um, you two know this is for OB-GYNE patients right?” Kyle asked as he watched Michael try to get Alex to lie down. A part of him wanted to grab the stirrups, but then Alex would punch him and he really liked having Alex as a non-punchy friend.
Guerin didn’t even acknowledge his presence, growling his angry cowboy growl at Alex. “I swear, I just need to know if it’s still in there and then we can go.”
“Oh my God,” Kyle eyed Alex’s belly suddenly half-expecting it to rip open with an alien predator, “Please don’t tell me he can get you pregnant.”
The sudden flush on both Alex and Michael’s face was almost as funny as if he’d gotten out the stirrups.
“No!”
“We’re not even—”
“It was the only empty exam room we could find!”
“How did you know we were here?” Alex asked as he finally lay down and glared at the ceiling.
“One of the nurses saw you wandering and told me my hot air force friend was here. If you and Forrest are done, he’d probably be interested.” Kyle suggested, immediately backtracking when Guerin face promised him a long, protracted death. “Or not. That guy’s a tool anyway. Goes to the gym even more than I do.”
Seemingly done with paying Kyle any sort of attention, Guerin started pushing buttons on the x-ray machine, way too familiar with them for someone who wasn’t in the field.
“Okay, Alex, seriously what’s going on?” Kyle asked.
Alex continued to glare at the ceiling, so Guerin answered for him. “He got shot.”
“You got shot?” Kyle rushed over to Alex. All his bedside manner drills flew out the window as he pulled Alex’s shirt up to examine him. “Where did he get shot? How far away? Was it a through and through?”
“I’m fine!” Alex insisted, not even resisting anymore apparently resigned to his fate. Served him right for getting shot the asshole.
“The chest. I healed him, but I need to make sure—”
“Yeah,” Kyle said, taking over the machines so they could get the x-ray as quickly as possible. Thank God for his alien extracurriculars that they didn’t need a med tech at all. He breathed out a sigh of relief when the results popped up. “You’re good. Wow. It doesn’t look like you were shot at all.”
He stared at the scan with a reverence he assumed people reserved for the Mona Lisa. His interest in the miracles they could do with alien biology wasn’t as intense as Liz’s but it didn’t mean he didn’t marvel at it.
Kyle turned towards Alex and Michael then just as quickly politely turned away. Talk about marveling at miracles. Guerin was looking at Alex like he’d witnessed one first hand. Maybe he had. Alex said Guerin was the one who ended things between them, but Kyle wouldn’t be surprised if he scanned Guerin’s chest right now and saw Alex all over the films.
He cleared his throat loudly before turning back around, “I think you’re good.”
“Now can I go home?” Alex asked, more than a little whine in his voice.
Kyle gave him his most serious doctor face. “Officially, as a medical practitioner and absolutely nothing else, my recommendation is overnight observation.”
“You just said I’m good to go.”
“Yeah, you can go home but not alone. Guerin can watch over you,” Kyle said giving them both a smile that he would have deemed innocent if Alex didn’t narrow his eyes suspiciously.
“I don’t need a babysitter.”
“I’m staying with you. Doctor’s orders,” Guerin said firmly, helping Alex get up to leave. “We can grab food on the way home.”
Kyle grinned to himself, pleased at the night’s turn of events. Alex was going to kill him, but he’d get over it. If the small smile Guerin gave him was any indication he was totally going to be the best man at their wedding.
Again, if your still up for prompts, how about Anger 14. “Go. You go and don’t even think about coming back here.” Actively trying to make switching the emotional category difficult :).
Challenge accepted! *cracks knuckles*

“Go. You go and don’t even think about coming back here.”
Michael’s voice was thick with pain, an acute sting lancing up his chest as wide, guileless eyes stared back at him. He wasn’t going to fall for that again. Not when blood was still fresh from his wounds.
There was a plaintive, apologetic noise but Michael wasn’t hearing any of it.
“I trusted you,” Michael hissed. “I believed in you and you betrayed me.”
There was another sound, less plaintive and apologetic and more strangled laughter.
Alex was standing in the doorway, eyebrows raised even as his lips twitched into a smile. Michael could only imagine what Alex was thinking as he took in the scene before him, Michael angrily wielding a spatula while Alex’s damn cat sat guiltily on the counter.
“She’s a little food thief! An actual cat burglar!” he yelled when Alex gave him a look that said Michael shouldn’t be berating scrawny, probably still malnourished kittens for stealing food, but Michael was literally bleeding here. “And she scratched me when I tried to take it back!”
“She’s a cat,” Alex said, picking up the scraggly furball — that Michael swore was now smirking smugly at him — and cradling her to his chest. “I thought you said you had cats before?”
“I meant like strays that hung around the junkyard, not sneaky little hoodlums with their own built in knives.”
The junkyard cats were probably similarly armed, but they’d been nice and marginally cuddly. The Cat (which was actually named Scraps, a stupid name Valenti came up with and Michael refused to use) was guarded and watchful and perceptive and, okay, she actual reminded Michael of Alex, but at least Alex didn’t scratch him. Or not when Michael didn’t want him to.
He’d been cat sitting since Alex needed to stay overnight in Texas for training and Michael thought he and The Cat were getting along until she’d gone and stabbed Michael in the back by, well, scratching him in the front.
“What did she take?” Alex asked. “Are you sure it’s something cats can eat?”
“She’s fine. She stole the steak I was gonna cook you for dinner.“
“You were going to surprise me with dinner?”
Alex gave him the soft, fond smile that he only reserved for Michael and for a second Michael forgot about everything except for Alex. Alex who was the love of his life, the person he’d risk everything to save, and the only one in the damn planet who didn’t seem to know that Michael was still ass backwards in love with him.
It was almost enough for Michael to dig in his stirrups and charge full speed ahead into I Love Being Friends With You But I’m Still Painfully In Love With You So How About We Give This Another Try Land.
Almost because there was a sudden tiny growl warning Michael he would be immediately eviscerated if he stepped any closer. She was also emitting an odd Don’t Mess This Up energy which Michael swore he wasn’t imagining. The Cat had one good eye and she was still staring at Michael like she could see into his soul.
“Are you upset because you’re hungry?” Alex cooed at The Cat which turned to Alex pitifully as if she didn’t just eat a steak the size of its body.
“You are so whipped,” Michael teased when Alex started towards the cupboards with the cat food and it was like karma went ‘bitch please’ right at him because Alex laughed, happy and warm, and Michael knew there was nothing he wouldn’t do to hear that sound for the rest of his life.
“What can I say I have a soft spot for junkyard strays,” Alex said with a wink, effectively pushing Michael off the Not So Secretly Smitten Cliffs and deep into the Idiot Who Can’t Keep The Grin Off His Face Ravine.
Michael coughed, hoping desperately to regain some sort of cool. “I know it’s not a surprise steak dinner but I can pick up burgers and fries from the Crashdown?”
“I have plenty of food here,” Alex said, tilting his head towards the other cabinets. “We can find something else to cook if you don’t mind hanging around.”
Michael grinned. “No, I definitely don’t mind.”
They settled on the couch after dinner and resumed their Star Trek rewatch, The Cat claiming most of the couch for herself so that Alex was pressed right next to Michael the whole time. The Cat actually kicked Alex every time he so much as shifted away, which meant at some point Alex had naturally snuggled against Michael as they watched.
It was no surprise steak dinner, but Michael had to admit, the night went far better than he planned.
Before he left The Cat gave Michael a smug look as if she knew exactly what she had been doing and Michael couldn’t help but smirk back.
Maybe The Cat wasn’t so bad after all.
Accidental telepathic linking between Kyle and Alex? It’s more hilarious than you think!
-
Kyle liked to think that of all his friends, both human and otherwise, he was the one who possessed the most common sense. He wasn’t the smartest, or the strongest, or the tallest, but common sense was severely lacking in their group so he was proud to claim that title.
Common sense that tumbled right out of his head to reveal the instincts of an eight year old the moment he was around Alex.
That was the only explanation why they’d both poked at a shiny, unidentified, rock that linked them telepathically. Or rather, linked Alex to Kyle telepathically and he could now read every thought that passed through Alex’s brain.
Liz had gone all mad scientist when they filled her in, dragging them to their newest secret hideout (another one thanks to Alex and his apparently limitless resource of creepy government facilities) and performing tests on them for hours, none of which had lead them to a solution.
It was fine, they could wait, it wasn’t like anyone was dying or having their brain liquified.
Until of course, Guerin came looking for Alex and immediately Kyle wanted to stick a pen into his ear.
"No!" Kyle yelled, when a whole slew of thoughts started pouring out of Alex the moment he saw Guerin. “Stop that right now! I don’t want to know about your sex life!”
“Why would you say that!” Alex flailed his arms, a distressed look on his face. "It's like when you tell someone not to think about an elephant. It becomes all they think about!"
"Then think about elephants!” Kyle yelled louder hoping it would drown out the dontthinkaboutwhatyoudidintheshower dontthinkaboutlastnight dontthinkaboutguerinsass that was running through Alex’s head in big flashing neon lights.
Liz turned to Guerin, “Maybe you should leave before Alex starts thinking about you and elephant trunks."
OHMYGODWHYWOULDYOUSAYTHAT
Kyle rubbed the bridge of his nose thankful that whatever connected Alex’s mind to his wasn’t transmitting images.
"I'm not leaving Alex. I don't care if you start bleeding out of your ears, Valenti." Guerin said, leaning against the wall, hands thrust into his pockets like a goddamned cowboy in a calendar shoot.
donthinkaboutcowboys dontthinkaboutMichaelwearingnothingbuthishat
“ALEX!” Kyle shouted.
Alex grimaced at Guerin miserably. "It really would be better if you were somewhere I can’t see you.”
"I'll be right outside the door," Michael conceded.
“Please tell us you found a cure.”
“I did not,” Liz said with a sympathetic smile, “On the bright side, with the way this substance is degrading you should be back to normal in an hour or two.”
“Great. You can go that long without thinking about Guerin’s ass can’t you?” Kyle teased Alex who gave him a glare reminiscent of high school.
Michael has a great ass. I mean, if you compare it to Max’s ass which is--
“I take it back!” Kyle yelped. He really needed to get a better grip on his common sense.
