@decthsentence cont. from here
Too long she'd woken up to a cold and empty bed, hands instinctively reaching for the left side where a warm body had once occupied. A body she had come to rely upon the presence of more than anybody else. Maria could scarcely remember how it had felt before, when she hadn't known the peace that would wash over her upon knowing he was so close by, his breath deep and even with the pull of sleep.
So used she had been to it that whenever he wasn't laying beside her (be it when he was on tour or afterwards, when they lost everything) she could not fathom a peaceful sleep.
Having him back in her bed was the kind of thing that had her praying to the gods this personal war he was waging would not take him again. And it was that thought which had fear pulsing in her every nerve that she would be left alone once more.
So when she reached out and he wasn't there she woke with half a start, blonde hair a tousled halo around her head and her skin flush from whatever dream had taken hold of her before noticing his absence. Her body is tense, no calm found until her eyes meet his silhouette in the window.
Did he not know how she feared he would leave her again?
"Maybe that's my master plan. To make sure you never leave this bed." If she close her eyes and allowed herself to forget for half a second, Maria could almost convince herself it was like before. When there was no tragedy running through their veins.

@decthsentence i call this one suprise feels
“You know the rules, baby. No going beyond the gate or where I can’t see you.”
Lisa barely acknowledged the reminder, short little legs taking her frightfully fast down the porch steps and into the garden to play. Maria watched the back of her head, heart lurching painfully the way it did when she would spend too long studying her daughter’s features and picking out the little pieces of Frank within them. True, everybody who saw the girl said she was a mirror image of her mother, but these were people who hadn’t seen Frank and the wrinkle between his brow when he was deep in though, or the curve of his mouth. Lisa was so much like her, but anybody who knew Frank could see him in her too.
It was just that Maria was the only one who had known him.
Content the child would heed her warning rule, Maria cast her eyes downwards to her book and blinked away tears. It had been little over three years since they’d given her the missing in action notice and every day was still filled with a million thoughts of him. Hope had been strong in her heart for almost as long, but the years had ticked by, the war was coming to an end and it was presumed that Frank Castle had died on the battlefield with his comrades and that his body had been one of the unidentifiable. Maybe that stubborn belief that he was out there was starting to waver. Just a little.
I’ll always find my way back to you.
The promise echoed in her memory and tears fell on the poetry book she must have read a thousand times - the one he’d gifted her on their wedding night. The only sentimental possession he had held to his name out there on the front. She knew it back to front and inside out, sometimes if she read the words long enough she was almost certain she could hear his voice whispering them to her the way they had that first night they’d made love. He hadn’t even had the book on him, just knew it by heart and said seeing her in the moonlight reminded him of it.
“Mummy!”
All reminiscing was cut away by the sudden yell from her daughter and Maria jolted up, there had been a waver of panic and unease to her child’s voice and she was immediately on red alert, worried that she’d hurt herself. It was halfway down the steps when she finally actually looked and assessed. And what she saw stole her breath and halted her heart.
Tens of millions of times she must have imagined this exact scenario and now that it was here she was struck still and silent as a statue. He was dead, they’d told her that over and over again even as she argued that they were wrong. That surely she would feel the moment her soulmate left this earth. A person couldn’t just lose half themselves and not know.
She never lost hers. He was standing in front of her on the other side of her pretty white fence.
Her eyes had been locked on his for what felt like a life time and yet she was certain nobody in that yard was prepared for the reaction her body took instinctively. Within seconds she’d crossed the space between them and flung her arms around his neck, mouth crushed to his with little regard for the two foot picket fence that stood between them.
Her soldier was home.
@decthsentence because what we really need is more threads
Maria had never seen chubby, little legs move quite so quickly before and there was a moment she called out after the tiny girl to slow down for fear of her tripping. Though there was no swaying Lisa, the three year old was all business with the most focused look on her face as she ran for her play first aid kit.
“Daddy’s hurt!” The little girl announced as if it were truly a life or death situation and Maria had to hide her smile of amusement, looking back to her husband who was standing there with the tiniest graze on his cheekbone and a nick on his jaw. Yeah. Life or death.
“I bought her band-aids for her medi-kit yesterday, you’re in for a treat, daddy.” There was no hiding the smirk when it was directed at Frank.
