if the show ever decided to have declan return i actually think (well thought before they made a total mess of his domestic abuse storyline) that a declan/lucas pairing would be really interesting. The only slightly older irish man with father issues and the sensitive and violent young man etc etc, especially from a Ste perspective. It would be a good impetus to make him think and more importantly talk about brendan, both declans and his own hero-worship of brendan and their relationship and how that relates to his childhood and so on, in a way the show used to do well back in the day. Even if some of it was more meta textual. But based on the way they wrote the trafficking story i sadly don't think they'd be able to muster enough emotional and moral complexity to do that.
Yesss, see, I thought the same thing around the time of the conversion therapy storyline about a potential return for declan in the future and him and lucas potentially getting together (mainly because 1. I was watching the era declan was in at the same time and 2. I found it funny that the guy leading the conversion therapy (ironically also named declan lol) was in the show previously as lynsey's brother and the first guy brendan slept with). I really feel like, if the show was still written and paced the way it used to be, it would be so interesting to see that play out, like you said. I would genuinely really like to see that, but I agree that they just would not handle it the way we would hope they would.

The nightmare would be that Declan comes back but the writers decide to pair him with Ste and ignore the history.
I was literally thinking the same thing when I reblogged that gifset of Declan💀 I could 100% see the show doing that. I suppose it's somewhat better than st*llon since there's only an 8 year age gap between Ste and Declan and he'd be like 28(?) now, but ignoring the history of Ste and Brendan would be insane. Not to mention the fact that Ste first met him when he was a teenager, but... that would unfortunately track 💀
