          “hey, you were in west side story, right?”       he thought he’d remembered seeing her onstage, and her name sounded familiar as one thrown around during auditions as a potential threat to those looking to get leads. “it was really good,” finn added, brightly, friendly smile perking up a bit. “i kinda got a little confused in the middle, but i think i figured it out by the end. and even if i didn’t, the dancing still looked pretty cool.”

finn   was   pretty   sure   that   this   was   what   a   PANIC   ATTACK   felt   like.   he   had   met   avis   and   ace   once,   but   it   hadn’t   been   as   claire’s   official   boyfriend.   that   had   led   to   an   INTERROGATION   from   ace   over   a   glass   of   whiskey   (   of   which   he   had   actually   offered   finn   a   glass   too,   and   he   was   thankful   he   hadn’t   accepted   it   due   to   his   churning   stomach   ).   

they   were   in   claire’s   room   after,   and   he   was   freaking   out.   who   did   he   think   he   was?   he   had   no   prospects   after   school.   he   had   NOTHING   to   offer   her   any   sort   of   security,   and   ace   had   made   that   very   clear.   

his   jaw   tightened   at   claire’s   words   before   he   started   to   SOFTEN.      “   i   love   you   too,   claire.   with   all   my   heart,”   he   vowed   quietly,   unable   to   look   at   her   and   instead   staring   at   the   throw   blanket   that   was   neatly   folded   at   the   foot   of   her   bed.   “but   i   .   .   .   don’t   know   if   i   can   give   you   the   life   you   deserve.   i   don’t   know   WHAT   life   i   can   even   begin   to   offer.   we   havta   start   thinking   about   that   kind   of   stuff,   i   guess   .   .   .      ”

          “more or less,”       betty answered with a sheepish shrug, avoiding eye contact by busying herself with some books she needed to shelve — conspiracy wasn’t exactly her forte. “it involves a doctor’s note, and some of my paycheck money that i’ve set aside, and my roommate doing some pretty serious covering on my behalf...” she paused, looking to her and straightening up a bit, reaching out to give her arm a reassuring squeeze. “but i’m coming. there’s no question — i’ll even go buy my train ticket tonight. no way i’m missing your show. it’s just ... going to be a little tricky, as far as getting out of class. but i haven’t missed class once, so ... i guess i shouldn’t be so nervous about it.”

          “why do people keep saying that...?”       finn muttered almost under his breath, brows crinkled in genuine confusion. claire wasn’t the first person to show some excitement at a bit of drama, wasn’t the only one he knew who saw some kind of entertainment value in it. all finn saw in it, really, was a headache. “i kinda wish we could just have a good time. like — don’t people get tired of getting mad at each other, or whatever? especially when it’s for something stupid...” and finn might not have even been totally sure what the root of the conflict was — it was hard to tell amidst overlapping arguments — but he felt confident in assessing it as ultimately inconsequential.
