Decatur Junction Railway
Here we see three engines of a short-line in Decatur, Illinois, near the WABIC interlocking. The railroad, owned by Pioneer Railcorp, operates 21 miles of track that was once the Illinois Central. These classic General Motors EMD units could fall into my “still working” series as they are all over sixty years old.
PREX 1607 was built as a GP9 in 1955 for the Seaboard Air Line. PREX 1608 was built as a GP7 in 1951 for the Atlantic Coast Line. And PREX 1609 was built as a GP7 in 1950, also for the ACL.
NS 3351, an EMD SD40-2, which is working the yard just to the east, was built for Conrail in 1977. While it is a relative youngster in this crowd, I now realize it is forty years old!
