Queen Martha Coolidge's delightful, quietly brilliant (and subversively feminist) spin on Romeo and Juliet is a swoonworthy romp through early 80s Los Angeles, which feels like one of the few teen comedies that seems to accurately capture the sweetness and banality of falling in love when you're young. Stars real-life lovers Deborah Foreman and Nicolas Cage (his first film under his now-famous stage name) and set to a never-topped alt pop soundtrack. When that iconic "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You" needle drop hits, it tugs directly on your heart strings.

Movie of the Day: Lunatics: A Love Story

An unsung, poetic, weird movie by the late Josh Becker, this comedy/romance/neo-noir flick is like a beautiful poem found written on a discarded piece of paper. It's imperfect, but it's oddly beautiful.

Ted Raimi stars (in one of his best performances) as an aspiring poet with severe mental disturbances who meets a woman with terrible luck (Deborah Foreman) who has been dumped by her boyfriend (Bruce Campbell). It's a sweet movie about a man who ultimately has to overcome his anxieties in order to be worthy.

(But remember, gentlebeings all, True Love is no substitute for taking your meds.)

If you can find this one, it's well worth it. (It used to be VERY hard to get your hands on a copy in the 90s.)
