the thing about “i’m going to build us an eden” is that i think ruth would have accepted if debbie hadn’t framed it in the light of “if acting was going to happen for you by now it would have” and instead told ruth that she really shines while directing. that it gives her a lot of creative control to dictate the vision she’s had the whole time that other (male) executives weren’t going to allow but debbie would. debbie said acting wasn’t going to happen for her because she meant that ruth was meant to direct this whole time but of course ruth heard debbie saying your dreams aren’t going to come true and they never were. but what debbie meant was your dreams are possible if you see it from a different angle.

do you ever think about how the glow storyline starts w debbie deeply resenting and blaming ruth for the misfortune in her life and sam capitalizing off of that and having ruth literally play the villain of debbie’s story (liberty belle vs zoya) and how in one of their last matches together debbie lets ruth play liberty belle. liberty belle was her freedom, it was her escape from the role society expected her to play as a woman and as a mother. do you ever think about how personal that was? it was like debbie giving ruth her heart. it was debbie letting ruth know she forgave her. really and truly meant it too. debbie made ruth a villain and she made her a hero too.

debbie wants everything but ruth just wants something. anything.

2x07. debbie and ruth’s fight, obviously. there’s this flicker of grief-stricken realization on debbie’s face when ruth points out debbie’s subconscious rubbing-in of her security and success. debbie’s realizing for the first time that she was measuring her discontent against ruth’s and deciding, subconsciously, that it’s worth it. the career she has little control over bc at least it’s some control, the husband she doesn’t truly love or find satisfying because it provides her the life that other people deem satisfactory. debbie realizes how much she contributed to ruth’s resentment and she rejects it because to accept responsibility for that would be to acknowledge vulnerability that debbie feels she can’t afford even though it’s the very thing that would give her resolution and satisfaction in life.
