        there’s no moment of denial, really.     the dead thing  --  the dead thing isn’t what he was promised.     he realizes this before he’s even gotten his bearings.     it isn’t that he spent a lot of time thinking about being dead, really, but  --  but his entire life was based around this promise about what would come next.    like if he did everything right  --  he steadies himself.      now isn’t the time to fret about time spent  --  spent, not wasted.      he fixes his eyes on theirs, looks for a simple question.     “     where am i ?    ”

           ‘  because  that’s  what  stealing                             is,’ sydney says, her patience already wearing thin. ‘there are a few laws against it. surprising, i know. i won’t get started on capitalism right now, because that’s a pointless conversation to have with a kid, but people make and distribute the goods you see in stores and expect compensation for their work. that’s like asking why we don’t just barge into kitchens in restaurants and eat the food there, or why we don’t just steal things from people’s houses when we visit them.’

            ‘  yo  ,  fuck  no  .  jake                                       is doin’, uh, somethin’. model u-n, i think. or mathletes, or something else lame. i’m waitin’ for him.’ finding an excuse to stay out of his house isn’t his prerogative anymore – he’s safe behind his own front door, now. these days, he’s got something much sweeter to hang around for. ‘why? what the hell are you doin’ here, bellybaum?’ 

          ‘  how  nice  .  ’                                 peko’s voice never really gets emotive – if she sounds disinterested, it’s nothing personal. in fairness, holding hands is probably as important to her as it is to belle. ‘i assume you’ll see them again, then.’

              it’s  a  nice  sentiment  ,                           but alice pauses even so, reluctant to accept the gift. ‘did you... um. you did not... steal this?’

     “ what is this, kid…? ” it takes beetlejuice a moment to process what they’ve made, but when he does, he smiles, cracking a big old cheshire grin. “ fathers are overrated, i hereby dub this day creepy uncles day instead. ” and then he picks up the cupcake and eats it in one bite, wrapper and all. MUNCH.
