For anybody who has no idea, Elizabeth is a side character (important side character) from my book. I’m not going to be including any major spoilers here, don’t worry. 

And I just... I don’t know how she happened. See, most of my characters change as I come to understand them and their story. But none in the way Elizabeth did. 

You see, in my first outline I had two female supporting characters, the innkeeper (Emily) and the librarian (the oldest version of Elizabeth). But when I started writing I realised they were pretty much the same character and all they did was give information to the lead, so I thought I’d compress them into just the one innkeeper. 

I thought. 

But Elizabeth was not going out without a fight. When my lead got to the inn for some inexplicable reason my fingers decided to type out not one but two characters. Emily and Elizabeth. My precious pair. And it would seem Elizabeth didn’t just survive, she wanted vengeance because she was a real piece of shit that first draft. She picked fights with everybody! She was worse than my protagonist. 

After  a long chat, some apologising and some bargaining, she eventually agreed to behave a bit better in the second draft. That is where the current version of Elizabeth was born. With her strong personality and a surprisingly intriguing backstory. 

Intriguing enough I couldn’t stop thinking about it. 

And with Emily by her side they were so cute, cute enough I accidentally wrote a series of short stories in chronological order with them. 

But that wasn’t enough for Elizabeth! She wanted more... and now, I still upload a chapter every Tuesday of her backstory which I fully know. I know more about Elizabeth than I think any other character. 

And I don’t really know how that happened. 

I guess that’s what character creation is sometimes, you just running with it and letting the character chose.
