So here's a thing: I was having a conversation with the director of my college's LGBT center today, and this is what it boils down to: -My college's LGBT center does a lot of great things, including showing a handful of movies every semester about queer things. -These movies are so so so often indie and queer made. This, largely, means that the production is small and there are never any subtitles. -There is obviously a need here for subtitled queer films. But we can't put the burden on the d/Deaf person (or person with APD) to have to go and try to watch the movie turned up really loud, or in private, because obviously that doesn't work for everyone and is mostly just ableist bullshit anyway. -But, with as small as these productions are, without a large-scale stop on purchasing inaccessible materials, nothing is going to change about the industry. -These movies are still VERY important--often highlighting minority/oppressed themes and groups from within the greater queer community. Tonight's was on black Trans men. -So, what's a college LGBT resource center to do, without the funds for professional transcribing? Other colleges have had success in paying students to transcribe... But these students aren't professional transcriptionists, and the burden gets put on a student who is very likely not being paid adequately for transcription. I thought using CART might be an option, but I don't know how well/fast a CART transcriptionists can keep up with a MOVIE. Thoughts? Ideas? Please reblog this and share with other d/Deaf and queer!!
