Summary:
While Mary was alive, she would tell Dean that soulmates were chosen by angels. When the right time came, he would hear his soulmate’s voice in his head, and he would know, wherever they were, they were singing just for him.
But Dean never heard a damn thing. Not at 12, when most people heard their first soul song. Not at 15, when Sammy heard his. Not at 17, when only two-percent of the population heard their first.
And definitely not at 28, when Sam leaves to be with the love of his life, and Castiel, deaf professor of rock music history at KU, moves in.

Dean Winchester watched his mate of three years, Castiel, put their son to bed, tucking him gently into the crib and wrapping his blanket around him. The nearly one year old boy was already out like a light, settling easily into the crib. Despite the soft look on Castiel's face, Dean could see how tense his omega's shoulders were, and how rigid his back was. Dean knew it was his fault his mate was upset, but it didn't make it any easier when Castiel turned and his face went sour, shooting Dean a stink eye.
If Dean had a tail, he was positive that it would be between his legs right now as he backed out of the room and followed Castiel to the kitchen. It was nearly eight at night, but Castiel decided it was the perfect time to begin baking. Dean watched as the other man floated through the kitchen with an eerie calmness, setting out the sugar, the flour, and the vanilla extract. He didn't spare a glance at his mate, and if cut Dean deeply.
Carefully, Dean approached the omega, hoping his soothing scent would wash over his lover and provide comfort. He moved into the corner of Castiel's vision, then waved his hand gently out towards him. Castiel paused briefly, his eyes lifting from the ingredients to Dean, a frown etched deep in his face.
"We need to talk about today." Dean's hands moved slowly, relaxed, like it was no big deal. Despite his efforts, it seemed to have no effect on Castiel, who only huffed and turned back to what he was doing.
Dean gave a soft sigh, trying again to get Castiel's attention. Stubbornly, Castiel ignored him, mixing his ingredients together to form a dough. Dean waved another time, this time closer to Castiel's face, but his mate didn't seem to notice once again.
Frustrated, Dean turned away, scrubbing his fists over his eyes and counting to ten quietly. If he got mad, it would result in an outburst, and he didn't want to risk hurting Castiel with his words. He wasn't going to throw away years of therapy just to hurt his mate and make the issue worse.
After he was calmed down enough to keep his frustration tucked away, he turned back to his mate, watching Castiel roll out the dough on the counter. His eyes were trained on the rolling pin, and his face was still pinched and angry. Dean waved gently again towards the man he loved, only to get the silent treatment again. So Dean decided to approach it differently, setting one of his hands on Castiel's, bringing the rolling pin to a stop.
Finally, Castiel's eyes met Dean's, and Dean wanted to celebrate his success, but he tried to keep his face neutral. "Castiel." His fingers spelled the name slowly, followed by Castiel's name sign. Dean's hand cupped in a "C", bringing it from the bridge of his nose out towards Castiel. Dean had heard the story several times about his older brother, Gabriel, had given it to him because of all the staring he did growing up.
Castiel watched Dean sign, then turned back to his baking, hands not moving with Dean's in the way. "Cas." Dean tried again, letting his thumb rub over the back of Castiel's hand gently, to soothe him. "We have to talk about today. It's time." Dean expected Castiel to pull away, but he didn't move, his angry expression melting away slowly.
Finally, Castiel took his hands off the rolling pin, dislodging Dean's hand so he could respond to his mate. "I don't want to fight with you."

Dean followed his mom’s gaze and it turned out that the something was actually a someone. Standing behind Michael’s leg, peeking out shyly was a boy around Dean’s age. He was a small boy, only a couple inches short than Dean himself. He had floppy dark hair and pale olive skin. He stared back at Dean with wide eyes. Wide, pale blue eyes.
“He’s not my son. He’s actually my little brother.” Michael said, placing a hand on the boy’s head. “My parents died a few months ago in a car accident and they left me to be the legal guardian of him and our other siblings. It was either that or leave them to be split up through the foster care system, so I made the obvious choice.”
“I’m so sorry for your loss.” Dean’s mom murmured.
“It’s okay, it’s been tough but we’ve all made it w…”
Michael stopped his sentence short as his little brother began to frantically tug on the hem of his pants. The boy seemed frightened and… almost confused. Dean looked on with worry as the boy began to whine, a sound so high and soft in the back of his throat. Michael excused himself and knelt down so that he could face the boy. He then began to sign.
Dean immediately understood what was happening, despite having not been exposed to sign language that often in his six years of life. The first time it happened and only time previously, was a few months ago at the Lawrence Public Library. His mom and him have been visiting Miss Missouri who worked there as a librarian. Dean had been watching their conversation curiously, especially when Miss Missouri had stopped halfway through to help a visitor. Dean had been intrigued as the man had begun to move his hands to form weird shapes, but didn’t speak a word. He became confused when Miss Missouri had begun to do the same and he had tugged on his mom’s shirt, asking her what was going on.
His mom ended up explaining that the man he saw was deaf, meaning that he could not hear. She said that most of the Deaf community have their own language called, ‘Sign Language’ where they communicate through their hands since they cannot hear speech. She told Dean how there were different types of sign language for different countries and that the type of sign language Missouri and the man were communicating in was known as ‘American Sign Language or ASL’. Dean didn’t have much else to discuss on the topic, but had been really amazed by the new discovered language. I mean, how awesome would it be to communicate with just your hands?
Dean watched as Michael signed something to the boy and immediately, the six-year-old looked a lot calmer. He then picked his little brother up and the boy immediately tucked his head into Michael’s neck, so that Dean could no longer see his face. Dean felt frustrated because all he wanted to do was be friends with his new neighbour, a boy that was the same age as him. He felt that it was unfair that he couldn’t talk with his hands, that he wasn’t able to understand what the boy was saying.
Dean first saw him in a coffee shop. It was a cliche and Dean goddamn knew it. He walked into the place, signed to Sam to ask what he wanted and caught the eye of a guy sitting near to the wall. His blue eyes bore into Dean's and at first, Dean felt defensive. He and Sam had grown to ignore the stares. It had been so many years since the fire and this life was all that Sam knew. That didn't stop people from staring at them when they were out.
Go and grab a seat. I'll bring this over. Dean signed.
Sam nodded and found a seat not far from Dean. Even now Sam wasn't keen on being around hearing people on his own. Dean brought their drinks and went to sit down with Sam, all the while noticing that the guy was still staring at him.
What is it? Sam asked.
Some guy over there won't stop staring. It's like he's never seen sign language before. Dean signed with a frown. There were millions of deaf people all over the world and yet it still seemed to weird a lot of people out.
If it makes you feel awkward I can just lip read. Sam signed with a shrug.
No, I'm not going to stop just to placate some judgemental asshole. Dean signed while he frowned. He'd always been protective of Sam and it had become more and more of a deal over the years. Dean was the elder one, the one to look after his younger brother. He never told Sam that another reason he was so protective was because of Sam’s deafness. Sam never thought of himself as different because he had never known any different. He’d hadn’t even been a year old when the accident claimed his hearing and he had no memory of a life before his lost his hearing.
A willowy girl with flaming red hair came out from the bathroom, passing by Dean and Sam's table, and sat down opposite the guy who kept staring.
Sorry, there was a long line. Miss me? She signed flawlessly. The guy grinned over at her.
Not really. The guy signed, still grinning.
Stop being mean. The red head signed back, all the while a broad smile across her face.
Dean's face went red. First of all the guy knew sign language so he would have known that Dean and Sam were talking about him and secondly, he would have known that Dean called him a judgemental asshole.
What are you looking at? Sam asked.
Nothing. Dean signed quickly. Sam turned to look where the guy and redhead were sitting then smiled. He gave the girl a quick wave. You know her? Dean asked.
That's Anna, we're in the same class. Sam signed. Anna spotted Sam and smiled brightly. She quickly got up from her seat and hurried over.
Hi Sam, I didn't expect to see you here. What are you doing?
Quality time with my brother.
Same. You haven't met him yet have you?
No, I've heard a lot about him though. Sam signed. Anna waved the boy over, her smile never slipping.
Sam, this is my brother Cas. Cas this is Sam, he's in my class at school.
Nice to meet you Sam.
Nice to meet you too Cas, this is my brother Dean.
The guy that thought I was a judgemental asshole? 'Cas' signed, a smirking smile spread across his face. Dean blushed furiously.
Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I get defensive when I think people are staring at Sam. Dean signed looking apologetic. Hearing guilt I guess. He added. Cas' eyebrows shot up in surprise.
You’re not deaf? Cas asked. Dean shook his head. You sign very well for a hearing person.
Thanks. Do you guys want to join us? He asked. It was the least he could do after calling Cas an asshole. Anna smiled and sat down at their table, Cas soon following. I'm sorry about calling you a judgemental asshole before. We get it a lot when we're out. Dean signed to Cas. Sam and Anna were too busy signing to one another to notice them.
It's fine Dean. I shouldn't have stared at you. It's just that outside the community I don't see many signing people. Especially hearing people who sign. Not that I spend a lot of time with hearing people.
Is everyone in your family deaf? Dean asked. He wondered what that was like, Sam was the only deaf member of his family.
Yes, I'm a third generation deaf person. My whole family is deaf.
Wow, your house must be quiet. Our house is full of yelling half the time. Sam's lucky he doesn't hear it.
It's just Sam that's deaf?
Yeah. My dad and I can hear. We talk at home and sign, Sam can read lips though. When we're out I make a point to just sign if I'm just with Sam. When we're with my friends I sign and talk.
Sam is the only one who is deaf? Cas asked, his brow furrowed.
Yeah, it's hard but we all know ASL. I learned as soon as we found out Sam was deaf. Sam goes to the same school as Anna so all his school friends sign and my friends learned over time. My best friend Jo is wicked at it. She was the one who taught Sam how to swear.
She knew before Sam?
He was only little, she made it her job to teach the kid cuss words. Not sure if I'm grateful or not.
It comes in handy around hearing people. You can call them a dickhead and not have them realise.
I might do that a lot. Dean signed, grinning at Cas. Cas grinned back and it was then that Dean noticed that Cas was incredibly attractive. He wondered if maybe he could ask Sam to ask Anna for his number. There was no way he was going to ask outright, he didn’t even know if Cas liked guys. It would just be Dean’s luck to meet a guy he liked, judgemental asshole comment aside, who turned out to be completely straight. It happened more times than he wanted to admit.
While he was busy having a conversation with Cas, Anna’s phone buzzed loudly with what looked like a video call. She excused herself for a minute to go and asnwer it.
It’s probably Ruby. Cas signed as he rolled his eyes. Dean had heard a fair bit about Ruby from Sam. A few minutes later Anna came back to the table with an apologetic look.
Cas I'm really sorry but I can't make it tonight. Anna signed, looking sorry. Ruby just asked if I wanted to come to a party. Could you find someone else to go with you tonight? Cas frowned, clearly thinking before he looked at Dean.
Do you like rock music? Cas asked Dean. Sam snorted loudly.
It's the only music he listens to. Sam signed.
Want to come with me tonight to a concert? It's at a deaf bar not far from our house. It will be rather loud.
That's the only way I listen to music. Dean signed, he turned to Sam. You'll be ok tonight?
I'll be fine.
Ruby said that Sam can come to the party too. Anna intoned. Dean gave his brother a stern look.
I won't do anything stupid. Sam signed quickly.
You better not. Text me if you need me. Dean signed. I mean it Sam, any sign of trouble and you text or video call me.
Ok dad. Sam signed, rolling his eyes as he did so.
Is your sister this rude to you? Dean asked Cas. Cas nodded while Anna looked offended. So, we’re rocking out tonight?
If you think you can keep up. Cas said with a wicked looking grin that sent shivers through Dean’s whole body. Well, he was definitely ready for something.

Summary:
Policeman Dean awkwardly encounters Deaf Castiel Novak in the shower while trying to rescue him from a flood.
Not related to any other work in the series.
Part 2 of the Deaf!Cas series
~~
"Police, open up!" Dean called as he thumped on the front door. The house in front of him was dark inside, but Dean had to make sure that it was empty before he could move on to the next house in the neighborhood. Behind him, the bright orange lifeboat was waiting, holding onto the railing of the house to keep the boat from floating away. Already the streets were up to Dean's waist, and the evacuation was crucial at the exact moment before the houses were knocked down and anyone trapped inside would be drowned.
"Police!" Dean shouted again, knocking as loud as he could as well as ringing the bell. There was a flash inside one of the windows, so Dean knocked again as well as rang. The flashing light inside the window happened another time, and Dean panicked, realizing that someone was probably trying to signal for help. "Coming in!" Dean warned as he kicked the door down and busted into the house.
Dean can't figure out why the hot guy on the train is ignoring him...that is until he realizes that the man is profoundly deaf. After an unpleasant misunderstanding, the two become friends. It isn't long before Dean wants more, but Castiel sticks steadfastly to his rule about not dating hearing people. When Dean starts to date other people to try to get over him, Castiel starts to wonder if maybe Dean is the exception to the rule.
Castiel frequents the docks of San Fransisco, painting the scenery around him. His art changes with the day but the handsome green-eyed man is everywhere. The artist has a raging crush on the mechanic but there's just one problem: the man is Hearing.
