Deadly Winter || bookmans-lavi

Allen paused to catch his breath, plumes of white spiraling through the air with each exhale.
The cold was one thing. He didn't particularly like it, and his legs almost all the way up his thighs had long ago numbed, but he had dealt with winter before and would have to deal with it again at some point.
The deep snow was a little bit harder to deal with, and it seemed like he was having a significantly tougher time trudging through it than Lavi was. Damn these shorter legs of his.
Briefly, he turned his head skyward, watching snowflakes gently drift from the clouded sky to touch his face. For now at least, the weather was fairly tame, but that could change at any moment and they had to locate some kind of shelter by the time it did. Just had to make it through this pass first...
Sucking in a breath to ready himself, he started pushing forward again, snow crunching underfoot. They hadn't seen a single animal in days, not even birds, and he was so damn hungry. What he wouldn't do for just a deer to cross their path right now.
"Hey, Lavi..." Allen mused, stubbornly trying to catch up, picking up speed. Lavi wasn't far ahead of him now, but over time he'd be able to pull ahead if Allen didn't make it a point to keep pace. "How much further, do you think? Before we reach the end of this road."
He assumed it to be a road anyway, though it was hard to say. The whole damn thing was buried. Earlier he'd knocked his ankle and nearly tripped into the top corner of a semi-truck. Probably there were other cars even deeper down. He hoped they wouldn't end up sinking through somewhere and fall on something that would hurt them, or even worse, fall through and find out there was nothing but a gaping hole with no immediate bottom.
Going through the mountains this time of year was questionable, but maybe it would at least remove the danger of people and Infected, which they'd had a terrible run of luck n dealing with, even if the weather was still a problem.
