Dr Anhar just arrived back from a routine visit to ECC Holiday Resort, part of this visit was to conduct the deworming of all the elephants. This time the drug Oxyclozanide was used. This drug is specially effective against stomach and intestine flukes which are common in the elephants in Sumatra and if not treated can cause serious health problems or even death. Unfortunately there is no drug available on the Indonesian market sufficiently effective against the stomach and intestine flukes in elephants, therefore we have to import this drug from India which makes this important treatment relatively expensive due to significant shipment and import taxes for importing this drug from India. The deworming of one elephant with this drug costs as between US$ 12 to US$ 16 per animal depending on the size of the elephants.
Popy and her baby born last November are well and we are continuing to provide some additional support for daily food supplements for Popy to make sure she has enough milk for her baby. The baby has started to consume and digest solid food, up to date has not been given a name but the mahouts are still waiting for the authorities to decide on a name.
