Inktober #12: De Ogen

The legend of De Ogen or The Eyes began after many children were found burned in Belgium’s Sonian Forest in 1937. Since then there have been tales of a strange mist that comes from the forest. Cars that pass through the mist often veer off the road after seeing small, shadowy figures run in front of them. The name comes from a much larger shadow that floats among the children that is said to stare straight at you through the fog.

Deogen, also known as De Ogen (The Eyes) is a malevolent spirit said to haunt the Sonian Forest in Belgium. It is usually seen as an indistinct figure made of fog, followed by several smaller shadowy figures.

The legend of Deogen is said to have originated when a group of nuns found numerous burned bodies of young children in the forest. However, the only record of this case comes from a 1937 book called De Kinderen van Het Bezeten Bos. As such, Deogen is considered more of an urban legend than anything else.
