I've been thinking about this for awhile and finally going to post it - Hawkman and Hawkgirl should both be pansexual, especially given the revamp of their origins in DC Rebirth.
So here's a quick rundown of what those origins are for those who might not know: Hawkman was originally a warrior called a 'Deathbringer', who served an evil deity that demanded sacrifices from his servants in the form of genocide. This first life of Hawkman was filled with billions of deaths made af his call, by his hand, and somewhere along the line he started feeling guilty - and seeing a redheaded woman makes him want to change. And he does, at the cost of his life. And thus begins the cycle of resurrection, making up for all the lives he took away by saving them. Being reborn across time and space and universes to do right - and to find the red headed 'woman' again and again from his first life.
Why did I put woman in quotation marks? Because if Hawkman and Hawkgirl are being reborn outside of Earth, outside of their own universe, than who's to say they were always reborn on planets with the same gender binary? I think the only thing that stays, or should stay consistent, is the red hair. Like why couldn't they have been born on a planet that classifies their populace into 4 separate denotations/genders instead of 2? Or 12? Or they only have one, meaning no gender?
I can tell you that it is entirely possible now to have had a girl Hawkman, because it's been proven that all Hawk'men' on different Earths in different universes are part of the same Hawkman. They are all part of his reincarnation cycle. Thanks to the current storyline where his body is taken over by the consciousness of his Earth 3 'villainous' counterpart. So it's safe to say that he was, at one point, also his counterpart on an Earth where everyone was born as the 'opposite gender'. (And I don't want to get into it but in an issue there was some - at least in my opinion - queer-coding of the villainous Hawkman in his stance, body posture, and language but I dont want to get into it right now)
Also, with possibly millions of reincarnations, at some point the Hawks had to be reincarnated as the same gender, or with no gender, or maybe as one gender and then deciding it wasnt how they wanted to present. Meaning that Carter and Shayera found each other again and again and fell in love no matter what they were born as or born into.
Tl;dr: Hawman and Hawkgirl should be represented as queer in the comics given the recent changes to their backstories and origins because, whether intentionally or not, that's what makes sense (at least to me)
