Owning a Dyson Vacuum
Isnāt it weird that thereās such thing as a luxury vacuum cleaner? But yeah, it exist and I own one. We have the Dyson DC50 upright vacuum for about 2? years and we bought it from Costco. Reasons why we bought this high-end vacuum cleaner is that we wanted the lightest upright vacuum cleaner. That was pretty much it.Ā
We used to have an Eureka Pet Friendly with Pet Paw vacuum cleaner. It was a nice light and small vacuum but dust clogs the filter after every vacuum. So it does lose suction when you vacuum and cleaning the filter was a pain in the ass. So I learned to cover the filter with toilet paper. Replacing the toilet paper was easier than cleaning the filter.
But eventually that vacuum broke and we bought a new Dyson vacuum. First off, the Dyson is a weird vacuum. In the past with our Eureka, you needed to switch some dials to use the hands tools. But nope, not for the Dyson. When the Dyson is upright, itās in hand tool mode. Once you tilt the machine down, it activates the floor brush and diverts suction to the floor. Itās an interesting design where Dyson tries to be smarter than you. This did baffle me for a bit till I later on realize that the Dyson took care of thisĀ automatically.Ā
The DysonĀ ācombination toolā hand tool is nice. But once I extend the brush over the tool, itās really hard to retract it. Also the hose is a bit annoying. It takes some time to convert to hand mode. You pull this rod up and then you have this 4 ft rod attached to a hose that always likes to retract. So vacuuming with the rod is annoying. I just take the rod off and throw it on the floor. Remember to put the rod back into the hose when youāre done because the rod is used as structural support when you vacuum upright. The Dyson hose uses a special attachment, so NOPE, you canāt use the vacuum hose to vacuum seal your vacuum seal bags. No first-party adapters exist in converting the Dyson attachment to a ShopVac style attachment (ShopVac attachment is probably what every other vacuum uses). There are 3D STL models of the Dyson to ShopVac attachment online and I had one 3D printed for $8 + shipping. Not bad.Ā
The Dyson does a good job vacuuming the floor. But when I wanted to use the vacuum in a upright stance, to vacuum the stairs, nope, you canāt do that. Remember the Dyson is smarter than you, so you canāt do that. Instead what we ended up doing is holding the machine quite awkwardly to vacuum the stairs with the main floor brush - we donāt use the hose.Ā
Something I do love about this machine is the dust bin and filter system. The filters never seems to get dirty. But Dyson recommends washing the filters every month. The dust bin is fairly big and easy to empty. I wonāt say the dust bin doesnāt get clogged. There is a fine plastic mesh inside the dust bin right below theĀ funnel tubes, that dust can clog up. Usually dust doesnāt clog the mesh, but sometimes it does. Just get a damp paper towel and wipe the mesh. But the Dyson is a LOT less maintenance than the Eureka.Ā
Will I buy another Dyson in the future? Probably not if another lighter vacuum exist. The Dyson is an interesting vacuum but we noticed quite a few other vacuum manufactures are copying Dysonās funnel design, so hopefully those won't have clogged filters to deal with and for less money.Ā
