Yeah I think that’s a pretty common misconception in general lol - probably because he’s introduced wearing a suit with coming from a political internship and is immediately trying to run Ronan’s life, I’ve gotten the vibe from fic and headcanons that people think he’s like 25.
Which, idk, is a big Fandom Pet Peeve of mine because I feel like you miss a lot of Declan’s character and what makes him ultimately compelling and sympathetic when you forget that he’s also a kid. Because frankly, someone in his 20s, or however old people think Declan is, should be able to deal with Ronan and the whole extended Situation of the Lynches with a lot more grace than Declan does, which I think is a big part of why so many people hate Declan. But he’s not in his 20s, he’s a high schooler (at least in the first book) who was raised in a situation where he was ostracized by his own family, was routinely put in dangerous situations (via his involvement with Niall’s business) so frequently he turned into a pathological liar out of necessity to survive, and then is left to run said business in order to protect his family??? Like lmao YEAH he handles Ronan’s Intense Teenager Anger and Grief incredibly badly, he has his OWN Intense Teenager Anger and Grief to deal with! Leave him alone!
Anyway that rant was not @ you at all, anon, but that does bring me to my point that a lot of the reasons that people think Declan is older than he is, are the reasons that it’s sad that he… isn’t. If that makes sense. Declan’s attempts to have control in Ronan’s life are ultimately misguided attempts at keeping a family together that has been horribly, horribly split apart, and at protecting a family that’s actually in huge amounts of danger. That’s… a lot of responsibility and burden to carry and yeah he sucks at it, but He Is A Teen. He’s trying his best
