I honestly really love what DC is doing with their compact comics. I LOVE that you can get a full entire story for only $10 and the quality isn't compromised and the art and text is still legible.
I think it is awesome that such a huge company is pushing for that kind of accessibility for their work.
I am a huge comic fan and I am fortunate enough to have a somewhat disposable income where I can spend $20 on a 6 issue trade paperback if I really feel like it, but that is not the case for a lot of others. More specifically, KIDS.
Comics are barely accessible to kids anymore and it does make me quite sad. (not gonna dunk on libraries or $1 bins at local comic shops here) but comics have just become so unaffordable, especially for a type of media where such a huge demographic is legally unable to work. A huge part of appeal for comics is being able to get single issues for cheap and collect an entire series.
Now if you walk into a comic shop, a new single issue, hot off the press, can run you around $5. Not too shabby on its own, but trying to collect an entire story? Runs that can last 20+ issues? We are talking in the hundreds for a single story.
Trade paperbacks are awesome, but even with those, $20 for around 4-6 issues of a single run is INSANE. I do believe in supporting the artists and writers and also supporting your local comic shop, but I feel like the price barrier is what stops a lot of young folks from getting into this crazy, beautiful world of comics. I hate that a lot.
Sorry, rambling on, but all in all, very happy with the route of compact comics from DC. I really hope these compact comics encourage a young kid to pick one up and fall in love with this medium the same way I did when I was young and ravaging through the boxes of the first comic shop I had ever been to.
MAKE COMICS AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE!!!!!!
