Two years ago, I was able to go to Dragoncon. The first and only time so far that I’ve been able to go. One of the panels that I had to go to, of course, was Misty’s.
In case she reads this, I was the girl that said Nyara could have been seen as a trans man or nonbinary, considering the deep discomfort the character had with their own body, and lack of control they had over it.
During that talk, Misty said that we had to glue our butts in our chairs and write, of course, but she also said that we had to publish. We had to overcome the barriers put before us, and make our voices heard, because if we wanted our stories to be told in the way we felt comfortable, then we had to tell them ourselves.
Even if literary agents wouldn’t return our emails, even if publishers wouldn’t accept our manuscripts.
So I took that to heart, and now I’m running a kickstarter to publish my first book. It’s small, it’s just the beginning of a planned 9 book series, and I’m absolutely certain that advertising it in this way will be seen as disingenuous by many. But this is my shot to make my voice heard. I won’t give up if this fails. I’ll keep trying. I’ll make my stories and put them out into the world, because if there’s anything the world needs right now it is heralds spreading hope.
I hope you are all in good spirits, and have bright futures.
