Dazai attempts suicide in a less serious fashion than when he did during his mafia days. Since he joined the ADA do you think he still actually wants to die even though he's gained new friends and a better life? If he does, would that change if he met a potential s/o (whether it be post or pre mafia era)?
I’ve never really thought he wanted to die so much as a find a way to end the pain he has been feeling since he was a young child. With fifteen we were able to see a glimpse of Dazai as a teenager, and hints that he had been suicidal/in pain since he was a young child. To me, Dazai falls into a category where he wants his pain and loneliness to end and the only way he sees out is to die, but he doesn’t exactly want to stop existing either. If he truly wanted to die he could put a gun to his head and end it without suffering much pain, but we see in the dark era Dazai is drawn to those who appreciate and see value in life–Odasaku and Ango.To me Dazai is a character that feels this constant suffering that isolates him from the rest of the world and has for a very long time. Who wouldn’t want that to end? But, there is this resilience and survival locked in his brain that all humans have and inside him there is something pushing for him to keep going even if he can’t see it.
