After the neighborhood was gassed, it was hard to see down the street. Everything - the sky, the air - turned a hazy yellow. It was explained as a short-term trick of the light. “Of course,” everyone thought. “Just as it should be.” Some fought the gas. They were afraid of losing their personalities, their freedom to think. “Of course not,” the government said. “We are just making life easier for you.”
The effects of the gas were not felt for a few days. But surely enough, the citizenry began to relax and not worry so much. Conversations were polite. Incidents of road rage went down to zero. Children shared their toys. Blood pressures lowered to almost normal levels. Even mom wasn’t so selfish of her chocolate pudding. The world was going to get better, with so much less violence. It was a new world order, born in a haze of yellow.
