you sit down to work but discover that your mind is elsewhere You have an assignment due in a few days and yet you are already stressed out about not finishing on time You know you can do the work but it always seems a struggle Many people experience these struggles in their academic careers Some get derailed by the feelings of stressed and inadequecy on the way to achievement Somehow the time limitation combined with perfectionism and novelty of task can lead to project block I am sure many of us have experienced this before, so what determines whether someone is able to overcome the stress and the uncertainty of the experience or whether the person will set themselves to fail by their own behaviors? Well we know that procrastination can have a variety of causes (perfectionism, not knowing how to accomplish the particular goal, previous negative experiences with the same assignment or assignements, mindset, whether someone believes they are able to succede on the task, how important the assignment appears, inability to get started, missing the window of opportunity to start the project early enogh to finish on time) perhaps have a graphic of overlapping circles with the different potential causes of procrastination) It is easy to dismiss something like procrastination as a particular variant of laziness, but that would mean explaining away a rather complex phenomena with a very simple explanation, because by the time that we reach college for example, we have had at least 12 years of particular kinds of educational experiences, some better and some worse, we have either learned repeatedly through experience skills which make it easier to tackle novel tasks and be able to trust our ability to successfully complete them, or not, we may even have PTSD in relation to writing papers or completing projects, sometimes even for reasons such as learning disabilities, At the same time we know that both procrastination and ADHD may share common evolutionary origins: novelty seeking Novelty seeking would have been advantageous for nomadic hunter gatherers when exploring a new environment somewhat fearlessly, as opposed to simply staying put, around the bend might be a better shelter location or berry patch But in modern times when work and school life is focused on completing significant goals on time, this interferes with the desire to explore and experience, so a trait which previously could have been advantageous and selected for such as the desire to move, the energy to explore, find unexpected and share it with others, is no longer so relevant in certain settings. So what does one do? And is there still a value to this restlessness, perfectionism and lack of time management?
