when you left, you left for good and i knew you would not come back. the way i knew the kitchen table. the way i knew the orchids and good coffee and dogs. i knew that you were just done. you found a girl who was sickly sweet, dewy, and not so round and smudged. you preferred her to me and i couldn’t blame you. i’d leave me for her, too, if i could. i knew we would not even stay friends, and i knew you’d leave all my shit that was in your bathroom drawer in a box at my apartment doorstep. when you left, i painted my nails and ate a grapefruit and i wrote you a letter. i knelt on the floor and stared at my wrists. i looked at my stomach in the mirror and wondered if things were different, we’d still be laughing in bed, kissing lazily. i never sent the letter. i never will. i knew you would not come back and you never did.
