The Ghost of Christmas Past
It was late afternoon, slipping into night and outside rain poured down; the meal had been consumed long ago, the presents had been opened and the board games had been played. The evening’s soundtrack now consisted of a generic TV Christmas special, and the sound of snoring uttering from several of her relatives. And then there was the knock; a soft, brief rhythm of four echoing from the front door. Carly thought it odd; she assumed that everybody would be at home with their families, and as such had not expected any visitors. She crept out of the living room, edging her way past sleeping relatives, and closed the living room door behind her. She opened the front door, and tried to say ‘Merry Christmas’ but was dumbstruck by the first syllable. The stranger was stood there, his face caught somewhere between a smile and....something else, his usually spiked hair fighting a losing battle against the weather. For a while they just stared at one another, both of them unsure of what to say. ‘Merry Christmas’ just didn’t seem right. “You’re still....alive,” she eventually managed to say. “Don’t sound so disappointed,” he replied, his semi-smile wavering but persistent. “Is it Christmas?” “Yep. Christmas day, 2011.” “2011? I haven’t been here for a few decades. And Christmas as well!” “Stranger. Stop.” The command was enough to remove his smile. Carly stared him down. “What are you doing here?” “You know how it is, I just appear.” “Why are you really here?” “I....I needed to see you. Just once more, before I, erm....” “Stranger?” “I’m sorry. For everything. For abandoning you that night, for not being around, for....everything. I’m sorry. Goodbye.” She leapt into the rain to embrace the stranger, but by the time her feet hit the wet tarmac she was clutching thin air. She hadn’t the faintest idea what the stranger was talking about, and the rain more than adequately concealed her tears. This piece originally appeared on this page on Boxing Day 2011. It was the third story ever to be written for The Flashnificents.
