Kiri Hyoryu wasn't worth bothering with anymore; he wasn't even Kiri Hyoryu anymore, technically. He was Miserea, an Omni Lord, far from the self-conscious pushover Davide had originally manipulated into Disaster. He was a god, free of vulnerabilities he could use to bring him pain or bend him to his will. Even filling his head with millennia of loss and trauma hadn't broken him for long, he'd accepted it and become even more of a nuisance, even more vexing, and it wasn't often Davide pursued anything but an easy target, but he was such a challenge - yes, challenging him directly -
but he didn't have time for that anymore. He was going to let him go.
He was just an impoverished middle schooler, doing whatever he had to to pull ahead. He didn't have the energy or the means to pursue a petty rivalry with a literal god.
That's what he told himself, at least.
Seeing the Grim Reaper on TV is what took him over the edge. He didn't know how he happened to catch Paruko's broadcast - he never did it on purpose, she just always seemed to be broadcasting - but something in him boiled over as soon as he saw the contenders.
The Grim Reaper was one of his crowning achievements- he took the desperate, pathetic child and twisted his heart to his every whim, had him weak with gratitude to a fake friendship, corrupted the sweet boy Wolf and Gao's little gang loved so much. He made Kiri into something awful, jaded and cruel but still so naive, so dependent on the power that would allow him to feel independent.
On screen, the Grim Reaper still smirked like he used to, condescending and smug, like he was having the time of his life watching his opponent struggle- and it was so cute when Davide knew he was ultimately the one being controlled, by the dark core and by Disaster and by him, but now it resembled Miserea too much - he actually did have all the power, all the control, and Miserea and the Grim Reaper were so alike but so maddeningly different and watching him be both at once filled Davide with the need to put him in his place.Ā
So he got himself to Cho-Hodaka, interrogated a weird old man that looked like a cloud, and eventually Miserea came for him - and it pissed him off that he would, that he did so with the face of someone greeting a dear friend, and without thinking he activated Disaster Force and charged at him with Evil Death Scythe.
Miserea didn't even look surprised.
And that kind of thing somehow became normal, a routine. Whenever Davide was bored, or agitated, he would call for Miserea and they would duke it out.
It wasn't like real buddyfighting- it was violent, and dangerous - even though he could tell Miserea was intentionally holding back with him, sometimes using his water powers to cushion the blows when he'd send Davide flying, he was fighting a god and he was fighting for keeps. Nearly every time it simply consisted of Miserea blocking all of Davide's attacks while barely moving, maybe making some snarky comment to get him off guard before completely overpowering him with one move. Both Davide's ego and body were usually sore by the end of it, but he kept doing it, and at some point he forgot why even as he wondered why Miserea kept humoring him.
"You know, Davide, you can just admit that you're lonely."
Miserea looked down on him from where Davide had fallen on the ground, too beaten down to move anymore. Davide hated the sight of it - him floating, clean and calm and powerful, while he lay defeated and absolutely none of those things.
"I am not lonely, and you're a monster."
It was true- even more than before, Miserea was embracing his Demon Lord status: he was changing, both in appearance and in the way he held himself, no longer hanging onto his manufactured humanity like he once had. He lived in Dungeon World now, and as far as Davide could tell, he was accumulating power- Davide wished he could believe it was going to corrupt him at some point, but somehow he couldn't make himself believe it.
"I may be a monster, but I'm still your friend."
"You are NOT my friend, and you never were! Any pretenses otherwise were just lies so I could use you!"
Miserea just smiled at him, and something in his expression said he wasn't going to believe him, Davide gritting his teeth in frustration as Miserea started to approach him. Davide wished from the depths of his black heart that he had the strength to get up and assault him again, but he'd already forced himself up "one last time" more times than he could handle that day, and he could do nothing but watch as Miserea knelt down beside him.
"Davide, I feel like taking a reward today, for defeating you."
"What could you possibly want from me? You're a god."
"There's one thing I'd like you to give me, that I doubt you'd ever relinquish willingly."
He helped Davide sit up, and then, Davide letting out an exaggerated groan, he forced him into a hug.
Davide would've preferred any kind of pain to this- his body was weak and worn down, desperate for comfort and powerless to resist, but worse was feeling how desperate it was for contact- he wouldn't have been able to refuse even if he had the strength, and knowing that was a fate worse than death.
He felt deprived, and disguising, and so so much that he needed this - and maybe that's what Miserea was trying to tell him, that he preferred these all out brawls to card games because at least a kick to the ribs was some sort of physical contact, and he was alone enough that he hiked up these mountains in the middle of nowhere once or twice a week to get his ass kicked by a god.
Miserea's hold was gentle, affection oozing from his touch, and Davide could almost feel the satisfaction under it, hating it even as he pressed himself closer despite the pain.
He let out a cry as Miserea scooped him up, smiling down at him as Davide shot him a panicked look of confusion.
"You can rest in the inn- you can't very well make it home in your condition, and it'll give us a good opportunity to spend time together."
"I didn't ask for your help! Put me down right now, you demon!"
"Now now, I was the victor, after all - what I say, goes."
The ugly cloud geezer watched them as Miserea princess carried him into the inn, and Davide vowed then and there that next time he'd definitely win, and when he did, he would force Miserea to do something so unspeakably vile that he would never dare show his face on earth again in his lifetime.
At least then, he wouldn't be able to tell anyone about the hours of cuddling in one of the inn beds.

Thought too much about cards and wrote another fic for that one DaviKiri au where Miserea becomes Davideās buddy after Yamigedo in hopes that showing him compassion will eventually reform him.
But itās not so much about that as it is about the intersection of Misereaās past and his playing style.
When Davide awoke, Kiri was already gone, and once he managed to drag himself out of his room Davide wasnāt suprised to see him sitting deep in thought in the living room. On the table in front of him were two decks, a few of the cards scattered into seperate piles around him, but none of them had Kiriās atention. His gaze was tilted towards the window, his eyes glazed over like they did when he was deep in the sea of his own memory.
Ā āGreat Spell, Ragnarok and Darkness Final Mission Card "World End", huh?ā
Kiriās eyes jolted to life as Davide threw a lazy arm over his shoulders, peering over them to look at the two cards pressed between Kiriās fingers.
āTheyāre both brutal cards- your playstyle really is messed up.ā
Kiri glaced around in a shocked daze, taking in his surroundings as if trying to remember where he was. Finally piecing reality back together, Kiri turned from the cards to Davide, a half finished thought in his eyes.
āYouāre right, they are brutal cards.ā He glanced at the two in his hands again, closing his eyes and pressing them against his chest. āI was just thinking about how they reflected me- how even without my memories, my cards ended up telling the same story. ā He brought up Ragnarok again, glacing at the other Legend World cards from his old deck scattered across the table.
āAnd now you expect me to listen to whatever story theyāre telling, right?ā Davide released his hold on Kiriās shoulders, falling back to sit down beside him.Ā āWhatever. Iāve got nothing better to do.ā
Kiri gave him a grateful smile, turning back to the cards in front of him. Looking at them, his present emotions fell away, his face turning neutral as the experiences of his past blurred together into something unexpressible.
āI didnāt always erase my memories of who I was. At first, it was enough for me to fool others, to convince them that I was human so that I could live among them.ā He went silent for a moment, gaze looking focusedly nowhere as he searched his own mind for the next relevant detail.Ā āEven when I saw myself as different from humans, I enjoyed the time I spent with them- so when those around me began dying off and it became time for me to disappear, I didnāt want to forget those Iād been close to. As I waited for my idenity to be forgotten by records and human memory, I missed them terribly.ā His eyes refocused, and he turned to Davide again, the nostalgiaĀ of his past erasing the neutrality of his expression.Ā āHaving seen me come to the relevation before, Iām sure you can imagine how overjoyed I was to return to humanity and discover that some of my old friends had been reborn for me to meet again.ā
Davide flicked an irritated glance away, tapping a foot impatiently.Ā
āYeah. I donāt see what any of this has to do with those cards though.ā
āI was just getting to that.ā
Davide glanced back at Kiri, letting the latterāsĀ patient smile soothe his growing boredom. Seeing that he had Davideās attention, Kiri nodded, expression no longer hazy as he neared his conclusion.
āTell me, if you knew that after someoneās death, they would inevitably return in the next lifetime, what would you do if something befelled those you cared about? Some tragedy scarred them so theyād never be the same, or some event or quarrel meant youād never see them again.ā
āI guess...ā Davide smirked, looking back at Kiri with the smug satisfaction of knowing his thought process well. āYouād despiar, because itād be bound to happen again and again, right?ā
āWrong.ā
Davide gave a look of suprise, and Miserea gave him a grave smile that began to set him on edge.Ā
āThatās the thought process of someone powerless, helpless to change the course of fate. But what if you had great power- the power of an Omni Lord?ā For once, Davide looked clueless, and Kiri turned Ragnarok towards him, reading its flavor text aloud.
āA day of demise for all living creatures. Welcome the end of the old, and a new world shall be born.ā
Davide raised an eyebrow, gears spinning behind his eyes until he jolted with realization, face frozen in horror.Ā
āYou mean- you slaughtered everyone just because things werenāt going your way?!ā
Kiri didnāt even flinch at the accusation, but when he put the cards in his hand back onto the table, the eyes that looked up from them were weighed with a new saddness.
āThatās one way to put it. The lives theyād been born into werenāt happy ones, and I didnāt want to watch them suffer anymore. I thought to hasten their rebirth into an easier time.ā He looked at his now empty hands, as if he could still see ages-old blood on his fingertips. āBut next time I saw them, I could only think of what Iād done- it became impossible for me to understand that they couldnāt remember my actions as well.ā Ā The regret was palpable in his voice now, and Davide squirmed uncomfortably beside him.Ā āAfter that, I began erasing my memories- of the lifetimes Iād lived on Earth, and of the power I possessed. Living while thinking myself fully mortal taught me what I was missing- that I hadnāt yet truely understood the value of a human life. Iād been using them for my own enjoyment, didnāt recognise the equal meaning of lives that were hard and lives that were easy.ā
Kiri went silent, signalling the end of his story. Davide didnāt move, too busy taking in his new knowledge about the Omni Lord, and when Kiri glanced back at Daivide, the latter shifted uneasily under his even stare.Ā
āDavide, do you know why I told you this?ā
āWhy? I thought you were just bored...ā Kiri shook his head, and Davide tensed further, mind racing to find some meaning in the story for himself.
āNo- thereās definitely no way you told that to me on purpose- you were just caught up in your memories and werenāt thinking about what you were doing!ā He ignored Kiriās patronizing look, becoming more sure of himself as he spoke.Ā āThat mustāve been one of your most painful memories- thereās no way youād give me such an easy weapon against you!ā
āDavide.ā A single world stopped his defensive rambling, eyes locked onto him for an explanation.Ā ā... I told you before that I could love you despite all the wrongs youāve done because folly was part of humanity, did I not?ā
Davide grimaced with disbelief, tension easing from his shoulders as they sagged at his sides.
āYouāre kidding me...ā
Kiri nodded, a satisfied smile on his face.
āI told you this to demonstrate that I too am imperfect- have even commited atrocities far beyond what any human is capable of.ā His expression was warm again, despite the regret still lingering, and the sight of it made Davideās stomach turn.Ā āItās because of that that I donāt fault humanity for its sins- can believe there is good in even the most wicked.ā He moved in closer, and Davide crawled back, becoming more and more repulsed with himself for humoring him and allowing him to get to this conclusion.Ā āAnd because Iāve seen even you change across lifetimes, I believe in the potential you have- that this world stubbornly refuses to let go of you because you are part of what makes life precious.ā
āCut it out already! Youāre seriously disgusting!āĀ
Davide got up, and Kiri moved back to the table, starting to put the Dungeon and Legend World cards back into their proper decks. Davide watched him cautiously, until Kiri had them neatened to his satisfaction and looked up at him warmly.Ā
āSo, do you want me to help you make breakfast? You just got up, right?ā
āUgh, thatās right. I canāt believe that youāre so sadistic that you were thinking about murdering people first thing in the morning.ā
Kiri laughed as he got up from the low table, ignoring Davideās half-hearted barb. Davide lazily followed him into the kitchen, watching him look through the sparse contents of the fridge as if he was completely ordinary, now thoughly in the present as he took out a few ingredients and started to puzzle a recipe from them. As he started calling ignored requests for help over his shoulder, Davide once again tried not to think of all the others Kiri had made breakfasts with, tried not to think of the stories Kiri might one day tell about him.
I am in denial of the impending winter, instead writing chesey and wildly out of season buddyfight fanfiction.
Set in a universe where Miserea makes himself Davideās buddy after the sealing of Yamigedo in the hopes that pushing compassion on him will warm his heart. In the meantime, he is stuck cooling his body. Because water powers.
Davide was miserable.Ā
He lay sweating and barely breathing on the patio of his dinky shed of a home, because something told him that going outside would somehow cool him down. Japan was having another one of its hellish summers, and just like everyone said, he was closer to hell than anyone else.Ā
Normally, though, it was more enjoyable. And less hot.Ā
As if sensing his agony, Miserea approached from the shadows of his home, looking down at his pathetic state from his privelleged levitated height. Davide drowsily wondered why he was decked out in his omni lord gear- even though everyone knew what he was now, he normally preferred to wander about as Kiri, passing as a regular human outside of battles for anyone not caught up on the news. Another bead of sweat rolling down his neck, Davide gave a dry laugh- so he abandoned his humanity when it was inconvientent, did he?Ā
āWhatās so funny?ā
āYou are. Youāre terrible.ā
āYouāre the one who looks terrible.ā He laughed, in that gentle teasing way that drove him nuts, like every other way he could possibly speak.Ā
āShut up. Iām working on my tan.āĀ
Miserea only gave another gentle laugh as he moved closer, finally relinquishing his extra height as his shadow fell across Davideās vision.Ā
āI can help, you know.ā
At first, he though it was just the extra shade- but in the silence of Misereaās expectant smile, Davide suddenly realized a thin mist was falling around them.
ā... What do you want?ā
āYou know I donāt like to see others suffering.āĀ
He knelt down beside him now, moving a hand into Davideās sweat-soaked hair. His fingers felt refreshingly cold, leaving a cool dampness after them. The heat having sucked away his will to resist, Davide let him do as he pleased, letting out a submissive grunt.Ā
ā...You know, you couldāve just got me a glass of water like a normal person.ā
āI thought my abilities would be a bit more convienient.āĀ
He had moved Davideās head into his lap, something that, had he the energy to get pissed off, wouldāve sent Davide off by now, and now pushed both hands through his hair. Davide wished with all his dark, blackened heart that the feeling of it wasnāt so relaxing, sapping away his pride as he gave into the feeling of the water on Misereaās skin contrasted with the sun on his own.Ā
One of Misereaās hands slipped out of his bangs to slide down his face, cupping his cheek before a single, jet black finger brushed his lips. Davideās eyes, which had been peacefully closed, jolted open as he pushed himself up to look at his buddymonster.Ā
āWhat the hell?ā
Miserea only smiled, and Davide couldnāt tell if it had been flirting, if heād been trying to fuck with him, or if he was just seriously weird. It irritated him not to know what he was thinking- ever since heād gotten his memories back, heād gotten harder to read, too experienced and complex for him to control.
Davide thought about how satisfying it would be to have the omni lord wrapped around his finger- subtly different from now, from getting favors out of a messed up, omnipresent love and some strange obession with using it to reform him.Ā
āDo you want me to stop?āĀ
ā...Do you get off on making me dependent on your power?ā
āYou can say no.āĀ
A stray drop from his damp hair dripped onto his neck, reminding the rest of his skin of the hot summer sun still pounding on it, and Daivde grit his teeth at the feeling of his whole body crying out for Misereaās cooling touch.Ā
Fuck water powers, fuck omni lords, fuck weird god complexes and looking down on everyone else.Ā
As he let himself fall back into Misereaās lap, he told himself he was the winner here- that he was taking advantage of his kindess and getting all the profit. He ignored the satisfied smile looking down on him, pushed away the thoughts that he was slowly being domesticated even as he let himself be pet into a sleepy contentment.Ā
One month. Kiri had had the dark core for a month before Davide brought him to disaster. It was a month Davide wanted all to himself- to taint him, to mold him. He understood why Rouga had wanted the same, and he laughed to himself as he imagined the gruff fighter yearning to take the pitiful boy under his wing- Kiri gave off an irresistable aura of weakness, an intoxicating fragility that filled Davide with the need to break something.Ā
How many times had he simulated those weeks in his mind, rehearsing the lies he would tell and the promises he would break? How he had trembled with joy when he learned Kiri would be transferring to the elementary connected with his junior high- how perfect. It was as if fate wanted Davide to have him. What if they were soulmates?
He asked him that, after Kiri had accepted the dark core. Ever since that day, heād dedicatedly worked to become KiriāsĀ āone and only true friendā. Heād waited outside the elementary building for classes to get out, had listened to his worries, had gone out with him and held him and told him so sincerely that he was proud of how heād changed, that Kiri had finally become what heād always wanted to be. He told Kiri his secrets- about how he was years ago, and how Kiri reminded him of himself. He told him about a Davide who was frustrated with a world that always felt like it was working against him, he told him that he could understand.Ā
And heād meant every word. Even as every inch of him ached to laugh, laugh in his face and tell him how much of a sucker he was, to laugh because he did understand, that life was unfair and thatās why heād stopped playing by its rules a long time ago.Ā
āI donāt know. I havenāt even known you that long, Davide.ā
āYou know, I heard somewhere that time isnāt a factor in these things- that it all comes down to chemistry. And you see, kid, you and I share something no one else understands.ā He took out his dark core deckcase, and Kiri took out his own, looking down at it and smiling. That bright, fragile smile that he wore only when they were alone, when he let down his guard and spilled his guts at Davideās feet- it was a smile Davide gave him, beautiful and hopelessly, sickeningly stupid.Ā
He couldnāt help but lick his lips.Ā
āBesides, even if you moved hundreds of miles away, the way you are now, youāre irressistable- unforgettable.āĀ
āReally?ā
āReally.ā He squeezed his arm tighter around Kiri, the smaller boy grinning at the tense excitement him his muscles. āEven if that uncaring pops of yours tries to mess up your life again, weāll never forget each other, right? You decide how life goes now, you control reality- thatās the kind of power you have now!āĀ
āYouāre right... I wonāt let anyone control me anymore!ā
āThatās my Kiri, ice cold!āĀ Davide had to stop his shoulders from shaking at the feeling of Kiri pressing against him, dependant affection oozing from his touch.
There was no way, absolutely no way Daivde would ever forget this kid- not when his puppet was so convinced it was the one pulling the strings.Ā
