De steengroeve van Karaba in de foto’s van David Pace. Karaba is een klein Afrikaans dorp in het zuidwesten van Burkina Faso. Buiten het dorp, op korte afstand van de stoffige hoofdweg, ligt een steengroeve waar mannen met alleen pikhouwelen en schoppen bakstenen uit massief steen hakken.
De rots wordt lateriet genoemd (van het Latijnse "later" wat "baksteen" betekent). De groeve is al bijna 30 jaar in gebruik. De bakstenen, die op wagons worden geladen en naar nabijgelegen dorpen worden gebracht, zijn de basisbouwstenen voor de huizen, gebouwen en muren die de omliggende gemeenschappen vormen.
