Yummy Dateland dates... we always stop at Dateland Date Gardens when driving across country. They harvest in October so that's the best time to go. But they stock several varieties of dates grown in their grove all year round. Our favorites are Khadrawy, Halawi, and Honey dates. Each has a unique flavor. Dates have been cultivated by people in the Fertile Crescent for nearly ten-thousand years. The date palm is so well-suited for the desert climate that dried seeds have sprouted after two-thousand years of storage. In the 1920s, medjool dates from North Africa became threatened by the red palm beetle, which still poses a significant threat. Eleven palms were transplanted here to the American Southwest, and tended by the Chemehuevi tribe of native Americans, to insure their survival. Nine of the trees survived to become the basis of the American date industry. Descendants of these original palms were eventually sent back to Africa to revitalize the species.
